U.S. Navy Will Do Landing Operations At Wallops

NASA'S Wallops Flight Facility has been chosen for Navy Practice Landing.

Officials say the Navy has  determined the operations of field carrier landing practice at Wallops Island would have no significant environmental impacts on the local area.

Wallops was selected over the Emporia-Greensville Regional Airport and will begin practice at the NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore this summer.

The Navy says the  aircraft (E-2 Hawkeye and C-2 Greyhound) will conduct up to 20,000 passes annually at the Wallops Island site.

The twin engine, turboprop aircraft are said to be quieter than jet aircraft.

Rigell Applauds Navy's Selection of Wallops Flight Facility for E-2/C-2 Field Carrier Landing Practice

Washington, DC – On Thursday, the Navy announced it had selected Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s Eastern Shore for E-2/C-2 Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) for aircraft stationed at Naval Station Norfolk. The announcement came after a two-year consideration period. The Navy recently completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) which determined there would be no significant impact on nearby communities as a result of landing practice.

Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-2), a member of the House Armed Services Committee represents Virginia’s entire Eastern Shore, including Wallops Flight Facility. Rigell said he was pleased with the Navy’s decision and looked forward to seeing flight operations begin.

“NASA Wallops Flight Facility is a world class operation and I am encouraged that the Navy has chosen it as a partner to conduct Field Carrier Landing Practice for E-2/C-2 aircraft,” Rep. Rigell said. “Home to more active duty and retired military personnel than any other district in the country, VA-2 is proud to support our military in any way we can, and welcomes the Navy’s business to the Eastern Shore.”

7 Week Old Puppy Stolen From Shelter On Eastern Shore

WBALTV
An animal rescue group on the Eastern Shore said it needs help finding a couple who it said stole a 7-week-old puppy from its shelter on Tuesday afternoon.

Susan Beall of the Animal Resource Foundation said a couple walked into their adoption center along Piney Narrows Road in Chester around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to look at some puppies and quickly left, taking a little miniature pinscher/Chihuahua-mix named Mango.

Beall said workers didn't realize the pup had been taken until after the couple drove away.

She said Mango is only 7 weeks old and hasn't yet fully been weaned from his mother. He only weighs about 2 pounds.

Beall said they're looking for the man and woman, who were described as in their 20s. She said the man was about 6 feet tall with dark hair and a strong body. She said his left arm was covered in tattoos.

Anyone with information on the theft or the puppy's whereabouts is urged to call 410-643-8700 or email info@arfusa.org. Beall said a $500 reward is being offered.

Chincoteague Island Pony Penning

There is not a more exciting week on Chincoteague Island than Pony Penning!  Sources say to be ON the island by 5:30 a.m. if you want to catch the shuttle to the swim site.  Keep an eye out for the first foal to come ashore.

Pony Swim Day

Wednesday July 25, 2012

At "slack tide", sometime between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., the Chincoteague Ponies will swim across the Assateague Channel just south of Memorial Park (7427 Memorial Park Dr,  Chincoteague Island, VA  23336) on the east side of Chincoteague Island.  There is no charge by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company for parking or seeing the ponies swim.  The ONLY parking at Memorial Park, however, is designated for handicap use.  All other folks coming in just for the day are encouraged to go to Chincoteague Combined School (4586 Main St. Chincoteague Island, VA  23336) and catch the free shuttle. There is also a handicap accessible bus for your convenience (click here for shuttle information).  Those staying on the island may catch a shuttle bus near their lodging.

The first foal to come ashore will be named King or Queen Neptune and will be given away in a raffle drawing at the carnival grounds later in the day (time to be announced).  Tickets are sold each night at the carnival and amongst the crowd while waiting for the swim to occur.  You must have a ticket and you must be present to win.

After swimming the short distance across the channel, the ponies will rest for approximately 45 minutes to an hour before “parading” to the carnival grounds on Main Street. See shuttle bus map for parade route.

The carnival will open at 7:00 p.m. with rides, games, and lots of good food.
Note: Pets are not permitted in Memorial Park or the Carnival Grounds.Coast Guard on Alert for Illegal Charter Boats During Chincoteague Pony Swim
(The Coast Guard is cautioning tourists attending the pony swim to avoid boats that do not have licensed captains, and in some cases have not been inspected by the Coast Guard.)

The NEW Pocomoke City Restaurant

RIVERSIDE GRILL RESTAURANT
DOWNTOWN POCOMOKE CITY, MARYLAND

Mark Reeves announced to the crowd present at the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday "there's not a bad seat in the house."  Well, I knew this was true.  After months of walking through the building-before it even was a building- countless times and standing in just about every corner I already knew that he was telling the truth.  Every single person present on Friday marveled at the beauty of the finished product and I couldn't help but think about all those responsible for this in the restaurants early years of development (when it was just a dream) that are no longer with us to share the excitement.

The Riverside Grill will be managed by Corey Reeves, the 23 year old daughter of Mark and Leslie. What a responsibility for her and how lucky the Reeves are to have a daughter that can handle such a responsibility at a young age.  And what a lucky young lady to have a father to have such confidence in  a daughter.

This restaurant will be operating by a computer system.  I'm not sure how it all works but it sounds interesting.  The wonderful thing about the system is that it has never been used in Pocomoke and once again Pocomoke is on the "cutting edge".

Just think of the view the bridge tender has! Hmm......
The extended area of the patio is new.  In most of my older photos it shows that the patio area stopped a few feet shorter than shown here, but was still very nice.  Mark however, had a different idea and felt the need to enhance the area with the thought of  possible patrons approaching from the south along  Riverside Drive.  The monies for the brickwork, etc.  came from the Reeves themselves.  Personally, this IS the "icing on the cake"!

So, chew on some celery sticks while you wait for the restaurant to open.  You have to appreciate the fact that the new proprietors want to be able to give all of us a pleasant dining experience for the first time.  They are as anxious as we all are.

The best of luck to Corey and everyone at the
 Riverside Grill Restaurant.

The Riverside Grill is on facebook now also.  Be sure to take a look.

Chincoteague Vol. Fire Co. Adopts Wounded Warrior Project

Chincoteague Fire Company Salutes Military Men and Women

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va., Now in its 87th year, the Chincoteague Annual Carnival and Pony Penning event will kick off Fri., June 29 with a special focus on military men and women in uniform during every carnival weekend. The event begins with a patriotic rendition of the National Anthem and a posting of colors by the American Legion Post 159. The carnival grounds gate opens at 6:30 p.m. and the first 100 people admitted will receive a fire company souvenir.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company will recognize men and women in uniform every weekend from June 29 – July, with a special focus on the U.S. Army the first weekend and additional honors for the U.S. Marines, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard during consecutive July weekends. On the weekend their branch of service is recognized, active service members with a military id will receive a free carnival ride wristband and military dependents will receive 50 percent off the price of rides. In honor of the U.S. Military, the Fire Company will donate the sale of one wild Assateague pony to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Denise Bowden, spokeswoman for the Fire Company, and a Chincoteague Volunteer Firefighter said "This is one more way for us to show our sincere appreciation for the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make for our country. These brave service members of the true heroes of the world."

Since 1925, the Chincoteague Fire Company volunteers have organized the Carnival, Pony Swim and Auction, an event made famous by Marguerite Henry's novel "Misty of Chincoteague" and the 20th-Century Fox film that followed. Each year, the firefighters adopt a charity to which they donate proceeds from the sale of a pony at auction. Chincoteague has been named the best beach town in America.

The tradition of pony gift-giving is further kept alive each year by the Feather Fund, which encourages children to work hard for something they love. Many children come to Chincoteague each year with the dream of buying a pony at auction, but may not be able to afford a winning bid. The tradition carried on by the Feather Fund in memory of a generous woman named Carollynn Suplee, awards a pony to a child who has submitted an essay to the Fund, and who has demonstrated a commitment to caring for a pony or horse. Mrs. Suplee is no longer living but her pony-giving tradition lives on thanks to Lois Szymanski, book author and journalist, who established the Feather Fund in 2004 after the death of Mrs. Suplee, who gave her children a pony they called SeaFeather. Biblical Psalm 91:4 inspired Mrs. Suplee, and Mrs. Symanski, who was also touched by the Psalm, named her non-profit organization the Feather Fund. The Psalm reads: "He will cover you with feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart." To learn more about this inspirational story, visit www.featherfund.org. For more details about the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, and its annual fundraising event, visit www.cvfc3.com

The Fire Company is working toward establishing a new home on the island for its firefighting equipment. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island, Va., is home to rare and spectacular waterfowl, fauna and the world-famous, wild Chincoteague ponies managed by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. For the most comprehensive information about Chincoteague Island, visit its Chamber of Commerce website: www.chincoteaguechamber.com

Vandalism ~ Pocomoke City & Local Virginia

Route 13- headed North and into Pocomoke ....
While on my way to Pocomoke City yesterday I found to city crew workers trying to decide how to remove the spray paint job left by  some brilliant fool a few hours before.

This was in my email yesterday afternoon when I returned from Pocomoke.  Tom forwarded the photo to me that had been sent to him  from one or our readers.

Don't feel alone.....
Just a few miles down the road it seems creativity from the mindless has become popular.

I hate to see these types of things.  For one,  it makes me wonder and ask that age old question "Where are the parents?"  And then why would someone feel the need to deface anyone's property whether it's city, state or even something that belongs to a private citizen.

Look on....

Taken two  weeks ago but the sign gets shot at frequently.  Intersection- Neil  Parker Road & Horsey Road

The old Jenkins Bridge post office.  It's been closed for years and sits at the intersection of Saxis, Road and Wessels Farm Road next to the house that was burned by an arsonist late last summer.  Google NARC and it stands for just about anything.  I love this old building and would give anything is someone would just give it to me and move it to my yard.  Otherwise, it will just sit there until vandals finish with it.

Horsey Road/Virginia
Property of a farmer and cattle grower in the community.  A man that would do anything just about for anyone.

Anyone have any idea as to who may be doing this in either area?  If so, I'm listening......
