NEWS RELEASE: MARYLAND STATE POLICE HOMICIDE UNIT CONDUCTS DEATH INVESTIGATION IN POCOMOKE CITY

(Pocomoke City, MD) The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation into the death of a Virginia Beach man today, after he led police on a foot chase and resisted arrest after being involved in a motor vehicle crash three days ago in Worcester County.

The deceased is identified as Yakuna McDonald, 23, of the 1200-block of North Tomcat Court in Virginia Beach, Virginia. After a motor vehicle crash and leading police on an extended foot chase on Tuesday, May 28, McDonald was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated. Three days later, he was pronounced dead.

Yakuna’s brother, Thadius McDonald, 22, of the same address was arrested and charged after the motor vehicle crash. Thadius was charged by the Pocomoke City Police Department with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

At 5:30 p.m. on May 28, officers from the Pocomoke Police Department responded to southbound Route 13, south of Brantley Road for a reported motor vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation indicates Yakuna was the driver of the car and his brother, Thadius was the passenger.

The preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit indicates that upon arrival of officers from the Pocomoke City Police Department, the brothers were observed standing near the vehicle and possibly impaired. The car they had been driving was on its roof on the southbound shoulder of Route 13.

After officers on the scene noted a controlled dangerous substance in the vehicle, police attempted to take both men into police custody. As police were arresting Thadius, Yakuna fled the scene on foot, leading police on a foot pursuit for approximately one-half mile.

When officers were able to catch up to Yakuna, he resisted arrest by kicking and fighting, injuring at least one of the arresting officers. Once handcuffed, officers attempted to carry Yakuna to a nearby police vehicle for transport, when he fell unconscious.

A state trooper from the Berlin Barrack, who had arrived on scene after the foot pursuit began, immediately performed CPR on Yakuna. An ambulance, already on scene to treat the injured officers, took over the medical treatment of Yakuna and transported him to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

During his medical treatment, Yakuna was placed in the Intensive Care Unit. Three days later, he was pronounced dead. Yakuna will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be completed to determine the cause of death.

The Pocomoke City Police is handling the motor vehicle crash investigation and the controlled dangerous substances found on the scene. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is conducting the death investigation. Investigators from the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation and the Worcester County State’s Attorney are assisting with the investigation as it continues.

Be Sure To Give Chief Sewell A Big Wave....

Taken from "Why Do We Kill?" written by Kelvin Sewell & Stephen Janis
Case File 11- pages. 114, 115

Here is a part of what the current Chief Kelvin Sewell says about his first days in Pocomoke.  New to Pocomoke, and a Lieutenant with the Pocomoke City Police Department  at the time, he had an experience that we all think nothing of.....a simple wave of the hand.

"I was standing outside the Pocomoke City P.D., waiting for a car, I think.  As I stood there waiting, I noticed someone across the street waving.  Instinctively I turned around to see who the person was waving to.

Suddenly I realized the woman was waving at me.

......That's what crossed my mind when I waved back at the woman in Pocomoke City.  It was a good moment:  I felt like I was a part of something, a community.  That they trusted me."

I hope by now you have read the book and have a true appreciation for what he has  written.  Pocomoke is like no other town.  And Baltimore, even with the beauty that is there, is just different.

I, for one, appreciate the way Chief Sewell feels about the town  I grew up in.  I miss Pocomoke and times  and I'm only a few miles away.  And  it's always nice to run into him whenever I am in Pocomoke to take photos....because I'm certainly not going to be there to commit a crime!

A few days ago, while  driving by the police department  I stopped on Second Street to yell a "hello" to  Chief Sewell.  Councilman Malloy was with me since we were headed to the new restaurant to take photos.  Teasingly,  I offered the  Chief the opportunity to ride along in the back seat....the windows are tinted and no one would be able to see him.  He declined so I shared my freshly picked local strawberries with him.

And then on the way home I thought about the woman in his book that had waved to him those few months ago. And I recalled what he had written that led to his confusion in a simple wave.  I actually felt a little  sad for the Chief.  He's probably never been offered  strawberries like that before....  Probably the only thing from a car window he has ever witnessed is a gun.  That's really sad.  Wish I had left the whole quart!

Honestly, Chief Sewell is a wonderful person, is doing a remarkable job and he does like Pocomoke!   Be sure to give him a big wave.

All of you locals have seen the new sign in front of the soon to be Police Station.  It looks wonderful and I like where it has been placed.    Cameras have been placed on the building and from what I could tell on the inside too.

When they make the move from Second Street to Market  Street  the department  will probably the   have  much needed new furniture and supplies already in place.   Pocomoke City Council, at the last meeting,   approved a certain  dollar amount of  to go towards new items.

A Police Station In Progress

The New Pocomoke City Police Station
In Progress
Thursday, February 23, 2012

This building resembles a maze at the present time with it's open ceilings in most rooms.  Lots of hard work has taken place since my last visit and regardless of the buildings appearance on this day I can tell you that this new police department is going to be a top of the line facility!  And in my opinion, it's about time.

I try to find humor in just about everything.
Chief Sewell's Office (above)
*Please note that this is not his central heat and air.*

Each room, when completed will be done in a blue/gray color to coordinate with the uniforms of the officers.  There will lockers, restroom/shower facilities for both female and male officers.  Plenty of offices and even a Records Room, Lounge and Conference/Briefing  Room and more.

This will be the Interrogation Room AKA
"The Box"

Men were hard at work all throughout the building.  Hopefully, the new Pocomoke City Police Department will be completed by May 2012.
According to a Beauchamp Construction spokesperson (Darren, I believe)  Pocomoke City Police Officers after making an arrest will drive their patrol car into this bay area.  The back of the police station is surrounded by fencing to give the station, the officer and the prisoner privacy along with safety.

Towards the back of the bay area is a corridor that leads to a larger room especially for the arresting officers so making it much more convenient for them to do their paper work once an arrest has been made with the prisoner secured.  After completion the prisoner will be escorted to his cell just a few steps away.
The cells, not completed yet, are only holding cells until transportation can be provided to the jail in Snow Hill.  The male cell and female cells  will have a double bunk, toilet and sink.  No bars on these cells.  They will have doors.  There was no electricity into those two cells or doors on this day but I do plan to go back and see what it's like.

Make no mistake.  This is going to be a thing of beauty and I feel confident that the entire police department that is now housed on Second Street will be delighted once they have moved.  The citizens of Pocomoke can be proud of it as well.

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to take that tour.  I'll be back.

Man Poses As Landlord To Collect Rent

Written By
Jennifer Shutt
Staff Writer
POCOMOKE CITY -- Soon after a Baltimore man moved to town, police say he began duping people into paying him rent to live in buildings he didn't own.

In addition, prostitution, forgery, making a false statement to a police officer and theft are charges the suspect, Robert Austera, also faces.

Austera, 57, of the 500 block of Moore Street in Pocomoke City, was charged after witnesses told police that Austera allegedly promised them places to live and took rent money from them for properties, a police investigation determined, that weren't his to rent.

Austera allegedly promised fraudulent rentals to at least two people. In the case that launched the police probe into Austera, one of the tenants was charged with fourth-degree burglary for attempting to enter a building he thought he was renting in the clear.

After James Motyka was charged with breaking into a building in the 420 block of Oxford Street, he showed police a rent receipt from Austera for $250, according to court documents. Motyka told police he had paid Austera that money as a down payment to move into a home on the 420 block of Oxford Street.

The men made an arrangement that Motyka could fix up other houses -- which Motyka believed Austera managed -- in exchange for his first two months' rent. Pocomoke City police say they intend to have the burglary charges against Motyka dropped.

Kacee Briddelle was also allegedly defrauded by Austera, according to court documents. Briddelle told police she paid Austera $700 to move into one of the properties he allegedly claimed he managed.
"Briddelle advised she found Austera's number and an ad offering to find affordable apartments for rent in Pocomoke City on Craigslist," police said.

After not being able to get hold of Austera for two weeks, Briddelle persuaded him to return $300 of her $700. Austera told her he could no longer help her find a place to live, according to court documents. He is alleged to still have $400 of Briddelle's money.

Efrem Phillips, who is reported by court documents to be the owner of the house Austera was allegedly renting out, told police he had never given Austera permission to create a lease or to write Phillips' signature on it.

In a separate incident, Austera is charged with prostitution, along with Kimberly Reeder, 44, of the 32000 block of Overholt Road in Pocomoke City. In March, Austera allegedly mentioned to one of his roommates that he sometimes paid to have sex with Reeder, according to court documents, and offered to introduce her to him. She allegedly offered the roommate sex for pay, but the roommate declined, according to court documents.

During the investigation, police learned Austera's 17-year-old daughter was living in his house along with a registered sex offender, Dale Kirk Audet. Audet, 38, was listed as living on the 500 block of Moore Street, according to the Maryland sex offender registry. On May 3, shortly after Austera's arrest, his registered address changed to the 210 block of Laurel Street. Audet has been convicted of third-degree sex offense, indecent exposure and violating his probation, according to Maryland case search. Austera's daughter was removed from the home by Worcester County Social Services for her safety, according to police.

Austera has been charged with more than 15 crimes since 1994, according to Maryland court records. He has been found guilty of motor vehicle theft, harassment through email, a continued course of harassment, telephone misuse through repeated calls and second-degree assault.

Thefts From Unsecured Cars In Pocomoke

I found this article in the Salisbury Daily Times yesterday:

"POCOMOKE CITY — Police say they are investigating four reported incidents of thefts from "unsecured" cars on Jan. 20.

The thefts occurred in the areas of Cedar Street, Lynnhaven Drive and Walnut Street, police said.

Items taken include iPods, MP3 players, wallets and loose change, according to police.

Anyone with information on these thefts is asked to contact the Pocomoke City Police Department at 410-957-1600."

Come on Pocomoke people!! Unless you live under a rock you KNOW that this is happening frequently around Pocomoke. And it's not just in Pocomoke! It's everywhere. No matter where you live or who you are there is always someone that wants what you have and will take it with a clear conscience!

STOP!! being enablers and lock your car no matter how long you will be away from it. Lock your things in the trunk or take them with you. This has been said over and over again. Remember: If it's something you wanted and you bought it chances are those things are what others want to. They just don't mind stealing.

So stop making their job easy. But keep in mind a few weeks ago there was someone in the area opening locked cars with a slim jim.

Be on the lookout for this thief.
