Written by: Bill Kerbin
POCOMOKE CITY -- Cypress Park will once again be the location for the 18th annual Drums on the Pocomoke Native American Indian Pow-Wow and Festival hosted by the Assateague People's Tribe of Delmarva on May 21-22. The pow-wow grounds will open to the public at 10 a.m. each day and close at 5 p.m. There is a $3 donation for adults over 12, and children 12 & under are free with a paying adult.

The grand entry begins at noon, followed by the flag song and veteran's honoring song. All vetrans are encouraged to particatate. Throughout the day there will also be demonstrations of the different varieties of Native American Indian dancing, including grass dancing, traditional men's and womens southern and northern styles, and fancy and jingle dress dances. There will be two dances in which public can participate -- the friendship dance and a children's candy dance.

The Host Drum for the weekend will be White Buffalo. Snow Owl of the Abenaki Tribe will be the emcee.

The lead female dancer this year will be Cynthia Adkins from Pocomoke. There will be numerous Native American craft vendors from Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and New York selling leather, fur hides, jewelry, dreamcatchers, beads, blankets, herbs and homemade soaps and other numerous handmade crafts. Joan Filmer will be selling her exquisite beaded necklaces, earrings, and superb beadwork.

The Accohonnok Tribe of Bending Water Park/Marion Station will be selling Indian tacos, fried bread, buffalo burgers and other tasty treats. This year the tribe will be raffling a handcrafted knife made by the Assateague Peoples Chief Medicine Cat and a Pendleton blanket, "Navajo Water Blanket," which features a dragonfly on it, valued at $300.

This year the Pow-Wow will also include Pearl Beamer, who has been a state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator and educator for 20 years. She and her husband, Jimmy "Two Hawks" Beamer Jr., take in orphaned, injured and sick wildlife. They specialize in birds of prey. They will have two red-tailed hawks, Wakon and Luta, who would have starved the death in the wild if it had not been for the Beamers.

Guests are reminded to bring their cameras.

Great Success This Weekend!

I am happy to say that two events held this weekend were met with GREAT success!!

The Shore BEEF and BBQ fed some hungry volunteer fireman during their first "THANKS TO OUR LOCAL VOLUNTEER FIREMEN" event. A nice crowd of fireman gathered for the free buffet and I'm sure they wished there had been more to attend. But, hey, when word gets around about that great food they missed they'll make it next time.

In this time in our lives when things around seem so dark and grim it should be a comfort to all of us that there are people in the community that take time to show their appreciation to those that unselfishly protect us.

In case you don't know Shore BEEF and BBQ is located on Route 13 just before T's corner.

In Pocomoke at the Pocomoke Community Center the Little Miss Hope Eastern Shore Princess Tea and Miss Hope Eastern Shore Pageant were held. Over 400 people attended and the pageant organizers seemed very pleased with the money they raised for the Courtney Bloxom Fund. So many people worked so hard to make this event the success it was. And even at the last moment when Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron was not able to be there due to weather conditions in her area these organizers sailed through the evening, I am told. The Pettine sisters are winners themselves. They worked so hard for many months and one can't blame them if they just take a few days off for sleep! More on the pageant later today.

Please remember that Courtney still has a long way to go before she is completely recovered. Donations are are always appreciated and prayers are too.

Prayers don't cost a dime. They don't have to be mailed. You can send as many prayers as you want. They're free. In fact, you don't even have to remember Courtney's name. God knows who you're praying for.

Please keep Courtney in your prayers.

Things A Camera Man Must Endure To Get A Story

During the driver's meeting at the Gumboro Mudbog on Saturday the drivers were all told to be sure to smile! HUH? Smile? Here's why, in case you did not know.

The gentleman walking around with the camera was Chuck Regner from WBOC TV. Chuck is working with Mike Parker on the serious 'Outdoors Delmarva'. The video he shot will be used in an upcoming episode which will air on WBOC sometime later this month or first of November.

I had pity on Chuck. No one thought to get him a cart to ride in and he walked all day long trying to get all the high points of the day. And believe me, on this particular Saturday, there was alot to see!

Later in the day he did manage to get a ride...........Through 200 feet of thick, gooey, stinky MUD in BIG RED!! Keep in mind that during the races on Saturday there was an overturn by the famous 'Bogg Hogg' and another mud truck that could not stop and ended in the field waaaayyyy down track. So you can't blame him if he was a little hesitant. Watch this video:

This ride should have taken him back to just about where he started. Here's what happened to Chuck..........and BIG RED!! Now even I know that with drive shaft problems you're not going to get anywhere.
That didn't seem to stop Chuck....................
He just got out of the truck, camera by his side, and took off walking.................
.....destination unknown. I never saw him after this photo. I do hope that he was able to keep his wits about him during his ride enough to video what it looks like going through the mud!

Mudbogging is not easy! Being a mudbogger cameraman can't be either.

Thanks Chuck for being there for the drivers and thanks for being a good sport. All of us look forward to seeing what you managed to video.

SANDY POINT -- The Maryland Transportation Authority is warning travelers to leave extra time crossing the Chesapeake this weekend.

According to the MDTA, due to Sunfest in Ocean City and NASCAR races in Dover, motorists should expect high traffic volumes Thursday through Sunday.

The MDTA will monitor traffic conditions thruoghout the weekend and, weather permitting, implement two-way operations on the westbound span to help alleviate potential eastbound delays.

The best times to travel this weekend, according to the MDTA, are:

Thursday before 2 p.m.

Friday before noon and after 10 p.m.

Saturday before 7 a.m. and between 5 and 10 p.m.

Sunday between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. and after 7 p.m.

Motorists residing north of Baltimore may consider taking northbound I-95 to Route 1 south in Delaware.
