Things A Camera Man Must Endure To Get A Story

During the driver's meeting at the Gumboro Mudbog on Saturday the drivers were all told to be sure to smile! HUH? Smile? Here's why, in case you did not know.

The gentleman walking around with the camera was Chuck Regner from WBOC TV. Chuck is working with Mike Parker on the serious 'Outdoors Delmarva'. The video he shot will be used in an upcoming episode which will air on WBOC sometime later this month or first of November.

I had pity on Chuck. No one thought to get him a cart to ride in and he walked all day long trying to get all the high points of the day. And believe me, on this particular Saturday, there was alot to see!

Later in the day he did manage to get a ride...........Through 200 feet of thick, gooey, stinky MUD in BIG RED!! Keep in mind that during the races on Saturday there was an overturn by the famous 'Bogg Hogg' and another mud truck that could not stop and ended in the field waaaayyyy down track. So you can't blame him if he was a little hesitant. Watch this video:

This ride should have taken him back to just about where he started. Here's what happened to Chuck..........and BIG RED!! Now even I know that with drive shaft problems you're not going to get anywhere.
That didn't seem to stop Chuck....................
He just got out of the truck, camera by his side, and took off walking.................
.....destination unknown. I never saw him after this photo. I do hope that he was able to keep his wits about him during his ride enough to video what it looks like going through the mud!

Mudbogging is not easy! Being a mudbogger cameraman can't be either.

Thanks Chuck for being there for the drivers and thanks for being a good sport. All of us look forward to seeing what you managed to video.

Prostock First Place Winner 2010 At Gumboro

The season of mud racing at the Gumboro Mudbog has now come to an end. Hopefully, within a few days all the points will be added and we will know who all the winners are in all classes that have raced throughout the season.

Points are very important to the drivers of these trucks because caring for one can be quite overwhelming at times and at the end of the year one really needs to know where one stands for the season.

It kind of helps a driver put into perspective all of the hard work, time and expense he or she has put into the machine throughout the year. It doesn't matter if you win or lose...... the time and frustration seems worth it.

For the drivers of the 187 East Performance team no one has to tell them and they don't need to know the numbers to know who the 1st place winner is in Prostock this year.

The first place honor goes to Patrick Long and his truck "All Night Soldier" of the 187 East Performance team.

Here's the video of Patrick's last run for the season this past Saturday.

A very well deserved and well earned win!
Congratulations Patrick!!

More on the Gumboro Mudbog soon...........

Mishaps From Time to Time At Gumboro

The wonderful people that make mud racing possible at Gumboro go all out in making everyones visit as comfortable as they can. I've never heard a terse word among any of them, seen any signs of anyone working the grounds seem to be unhappy. Each event is positively alcohol FREE.....which is a wonderful thing........

In the concession stand they have a wonderful assortment of hats, t-shirts and really great food.

They don't seem to forget a thing........well almost........

This is a photo of "Orange Crush" driven by Jared Collins. Jared is familiar face in the pits at Gumboro as is his truck to the spectators that cheer him on.

Saturday Jared had an unfortunate mishap that caused his truck to almost roll over as he traveled through the 200 feet of thick mud at a high rate of speed.

I had thought I had his race on video but don't. These are the photos that I did capture.

It seems something around the wheel area snapped causing damage to the front end. The driver was not injured but this could have been a most unfortunate experience for Jared and everyone else watching yesterday.

I keep a watchful eye on all these trucks. An accident can happen at anytime regardless of the size of the trucks motor or the speed applied to gain the least amount of seconds. Spectators are watching, children are watching, family and friends are watching and other racers are watching.

An accident like this one which does not look like much from the photos can scare the pants off everybody.

For myself, when this occurs, I can't help but feel faint. The one thing I pay close attention to is RESPONSE. When these pictures were taken the driver had been removed and there was no further danger to the truck.

The crew that was there was empty handed. NO fire extinquishers! Not one.

Also NO emergency crew. NO ambulance.

And you say........."didn't need one". And I say but IF there had been a need for one would these racers have been protected? By whom?

Oh, I'll tell you how and I will tell you just exactly WHO protected ANOTHER DRIVER yesterday!

Stay tuned.......

More Gumboro Mudbog

During opening ceremonies at the Gumboro Mudbog yesterday the drivers that participated in the August 28th Charity Run For the Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Hospital were recognized. It was espicially comforting to hear that the 50/50 raffle yesterday raised an extra $200 OR MORE that will be added to the original amount already raised.

More than 50 trucks registered for the mudbog in all classes. Big Tire and Small Tire Modified Classes both had a first place prize of $750.00 EACH which enticed more drivers to bring their trucks and take a chance.

BUSY DAY AT GUMBORO~ Alot Of Good Racing

What a beautiful, bright and sunny day we had yesterday at the Gumboro Mudbog.

Days likes this don't get any better on the Eastern Shore. There seemed to be many more spectators the last couple of times and alot of them appear (from the pit side) that in spite of what they drive to the race in they come equipped sometimes with those pop up tents or beach umbrellas. This is a wonderful idea, especially if you have children, since it gives more room to move around as apposed to sitting on those hard bleachers in the sun all day. Even tailgait watching can be relaxing.

And those pop-up tents are on the pit side too! I wouldn 't be afraid to bet that those inexpensive creations probably take the days temperature down 12 degrees or more........ true lifesavers for alot of us who arrive early in the morning and don't leave until the evening hours.

I love to have and see family and friends around us and yesterday there was plenty of that!
It's been custom for a while now that participating trucks line the fence before the races. This gives the crowd a chance to view them before the muddy races begin.
And of course the Gumboro Mudbog would not be the same without the Kid's Power Wheels Race! There were only two for the race yesterday but as usual quite a sight to see.
Here's the video of that most important race! The Future Mudbog Racers! And this young lady seems to beat them all! Could it be that she has the inside scoop because her Dad is a truck racer himself? We'll never know.

Some People Think Mud Bogging Is A Good Place For Politics

Some of you may not know this but there have been a few people that have worked quite hard behind the scenes for quite a few months to arrange the events at the Gumboro Mudbog. In fact, those people work behind the scenes for the wounded soldiers more times than anyone knows.
Last week I had a few conversations with a couple of them about the event because I wanted to know more so that I could write about in more depth on this blog. These men are no slackers when it comes to caring about these men and women of the military and I wish more people (including myself when it comes to giving) could and would do more.

Saturday was designated to be a day for the wounded warriors. They were coming to Gumboro to watch the mud races and to enjoy themselves on Delmarva and so the people could say thank you for all they have done and for all of the sacrifices they have given to this country.

Mr. Butch Elzey, and and some others deserve a pat on the back for all of the hard work put forth for Saturday's events. However, I was told in my conversation that POLITICS will play NO part in the events. I agreed with that decision 100%.
But it seems that one person either didn't get the memo, or has no respect for the military, or just lacks common sense and compassion.

It has been reported that this person was PLACING CAMPAIGN STICKERS ON WOUNDED WARRIORS CHILDREN AT THE MUD BOG ON SATURDAY!!
Tell me Ms. Rollins, have you ever bothered to visit the Gumboro Mud Bog at any other time before this past Saturday? Have you ever been there before to just see what these dedicated people have done for YOUR state of DELAWARE?

I can't say a word about anyone running for any office in the state of Delaware.... I am not a resident of that state. But Ms. Rollins, I AM A RESIDENT OF THIS GREAT AND WONDERFUL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!

And that makes me able to tell you that what you did Saturday was inexcusable and low and in poor taste!!

One Soldier Gets A Taste Of Mud Bogging!!

I will get no argument from anyone at Gumboro Mudbog yesterday when I say it was a wonderful Delmarvalous day!

With so much activity towards the ending of racing competition yesterday hardly no one noticed this soldier being pushed in his wheel chair onto the racing arena.

I hope in some small way it says "thanks for all you have done for all of us".

Precious cargo aboard this truck! I'm not just talking about the driver I'm talking about the fearless warrior riding on the passenger side.
Watch this video................
(Length of pit is 200 feet).

(I can't help but wonder what his thoughts were as that truck pushed mud onto the windshield.)

The crowd went WILD and by the time they reached the spectators everyone was on their feet cheering! God Bless and protect all the soldiers in the military.......far away or near. God bless and protect their families.

It is because of your sacrifices that we are given the opportunity to go about each day freely
and enjoy our lives without fear.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!

Gumboro Mudbog "Support For The Wounded Soldiers At Walter Reed Hospital"

There will be more photos and video later today of the charity event from the Gumboro Mudbog yesterday.

GUMBORO -- An estimated 2,000 people drove their souped-up trucks, four-wheelers or just everyday cars to the small town of Gumboro on Saturday to watch mud fly at the Gumboro Mud Bog.

As one of the four events held in Gumboro this year, volunteer Allen Jones said it's amazing to see how much it's grown in its seven years of existence.

"Sometimes you just sit back and remember when there was 50, 60 people here," he said. "Now, you see (thousands)."

Saturday's race was Gumboro Mud Bog's annual charity event, which organizer Ray Ellis said was likely the big reason for the huge draw. All money collected from Saturday's $7 admission will be donated this Christmas to the soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

While the attendance numbers may have been given a boost by the charity drive, longtime mud bogger Wesley Townsend of Crisfield said interest in the sport has been on the rise. Townsend also races at a track in his hometown.

"From the looks of the crowd here and the looks of the crowd in Crisfield, it looks like everybody wants (mud bogging) to come back," he said. "It just keeps getting bigger and bigger."

Townsend started racing in the late 1980s when the sport was at a peak in popularity. At the time, he said there were five different mud bog venues on the Eastern Shore. Interest and participation dropped in the 1990s, but has started to pick up again recently, he said.

"I was into it in the late '80s, early '90s, but then got away from it and grew up," he said. "Then my nephew brought me back and the bug bit me ... again."

Gumboro Mud Bog features three 200-foot pits designed for the seven different classes of trucks racing. According to Ellis, the objective of the race is to be the fastest in the class to drive completely through the pit.

If no one reaches the end, the truck that achieved the longest distance is crowned champion.

The classes are determined by the truck and tire size. Ellis said tires typically range from the common 31-inch tire to a tractor tire.

Although the Gumboro Mud Bog is organized by Ellis, it was truly created by his two sons.

"(Ray's son) and his friends wanted to see who had the baddest truck, so they built a pit," he said. "Well, the pit got bigger and the pit got longer. Every weekend, they would come and more buddies would want to try it out. It just kept bigger and bigger."

Eventually crowds started trickling in, and the rest is history.
