Share the Road Safely During Community Bike Rides 

The Worcester County Bike and Pedestrian Coalition will hold the last of 3 community bike rides to celebrate National Bike Month in Pocomoke City on Saturday, May 22 beginning at 12 noon. The six mile loop will begin and end at Newtowne Park.  Experienced riders with helmets are invited to join the free event.  There will also be a ride in the park for younger children.  For more information or to register email: sholland@pocomokemd.com

With the return of warmer weather, beach visitors, and increased number of public 
events, more people will be walking and biking along trails and roadways.  The Coalition reminds drivers, bikers, and pedestrians to follow guidance from Maryland Department of Transportation to  BE STREETWISE every day.

Motorists:
Look for people walking and cycling, especially at intersections.  
Yield to bicyclists when turning. 
Allow 3 feet of room when passing bicyclists. It’s the law in Maryland!
Watch for approaching bikes before opening your car door. 
Maintain full attention when driving to avoid distracted driving. 

Bicyclists: 
Ride with the traffic on the right side of the road.
Stop at all red lights and stop signs. 
Use hand signals when turning and audible alerts when passing. 
           Stay visible with reflectors and bright clothing.

U.S. Space Force planning for Wallops launch in mid-June

A Northrop Grumman Minotaur 1 rocket for the United States Space Force (USSF) is being readied at Wallops. It will carry a national security payload for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The launch is scheduled for June 15th.

UPDATE (Saturday, May 15): NASA has scrubbed Saturday night’s rocket launch because of cloud cover in Bermuda. The agency said it will make one final launch attempt Sunday night, May 16. Saturday was the seventh delay of the rocket launch, with most of the delays related to unfavorable weather conditions.

Let's see.....I had Sarah Dallas for first grade, Julia Robertson for second, Violet Chesser for fourth and Annie Ross for principal. Miss Ross, by the way, was a very strong Orioles fan.

tkforppe says: I had Sarah Dallas for first grade. There was a fire in that old school building that year (1948-1949) and we were off school for a while. Julia Robertson was my teacher in third grade although she apparently taught second grade during most of her career. Incidentally, my  second grade teacher was Miss Mary Moore at the start of the school year and she became Mrs. Klein Leister during that school year.

Mask mandate ending


Governor Larry Hogan announced Friday afternoon that the mask mandate is ending in Maryland with the exception of healthcare settings, schools, and public transportation. It is highly recommended that those who have not been fully vaccinated continue to wear masks.

Virginia is also ending mask requirements now and Delaware is following suit on May 21st. 

Human launches in Wallops future?

 

An Electron rocket is pictured at Wallops.  It's reported that a larger version of the rocket could be used to launch humans.

At Thursday’s Eggs and Issues Breakfast, sponsored by the Eastern Shore of Va. Chamber of Commerce, Accomack Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Wolf commented that as he understands it,  human launches could be coming to the Wallops Flight Facility in the  future.  Rocket Lab is currently launching Electron Rockets from Wallops but is working to get into the human transport business as well.

UPDATED: Next Wallops launch try rescheduled to Saturday.

NASA Wallops has again postponed the launch of the Black Brant sounding rocket until Saturday .   NASA tweeted that the launch was called off in order to give technicians the opportunity to examine the rocket after it  had contact with a launcher support during preparation for the launch.  The next launch opportunity is 8:02 p.m. Saturday , May 15.

Pocomoke City Police Department


 Press Release: On May 10th, 2021 at 6:30pm, the Pocomoke City Mayor and Council, along with the City Manager and City Attorney convened at City Hall chambers in Closed-Session to discuss the future of the Pocomoke City Police Department. At the request of the City Manager, a motion by Council was made to rebuild the Pocomoke City Police Department internally in lieu of the option to be defunded and absorbed by the Worcester County Sheriff's Office. The motion was seconded and voted unanimously in favor by the Council. The Mayor and Council also appointed Lieutenant Arthur R. Hancock to serve as Interim Chief of Police until further notice.



No Launch Tuesday

Tuesday's sounding rocket launch from Wallops was scrubbed due to environmental conditions and was rescheduled for 806p.m. Wednesday.
