Hostess Bankruptcy 2012:

Maker Of Wonder Bread, Twinkies Prepares To Refile For Chapter 11

Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of Wonder Bread and Twinkies, is preparing to refile for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection just two years after emerging, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

A spokesman for the privately held Irving, Texas, bakery company declined to comment on the report.

The Wall Street Journal said people familiar with the matter said the company is facing a cash crunch with more than $860 million in debt, high labor expenses and rising ingredient costs.

When the company, then called Interstate Bakeries and based in Kansas City, Mo., filed for bankruptcy protection in 2004, it blamed low sales and high fixed costs. It emerged in February 2009.

Hostess Brands employs about 19,000 workers and operates in 49 states. Annual sales are about $2 billion, according to the company's website.

Virginia Beach Victim-Witness Program Receives Award for Service to Crime Victims

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that the office’s Victim-Witness Program received the 2011 Program of the Year award from the Virginia Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund (CICF).

The award was formally presented by CICF Director, Mary Vail Ware, at the Virginia Beach City Council meeting held on Tuesday evening, January 10, 2012.

According to CICF, the Program of the Year award signifies “outstanding service and advocacy on behalf of victims and for providing assistance to help ease the economic burden caused by violent crime.”

Presented annually since 2004, over 100 Victim-Witness programs throughout the state were candidates for the award.

A group of 18 CICF staff select the recipient based upon the amount of CICF claims submitted by the program in comparison to their population and crime rate, the program’s mechanism for and amount of restitution collection, how well the victim-witness advocates relate to their victims, and how responsive the program is to CICF requests for assistance in advancing a claim.

Virginia Beach’s Victim-Witness program facilitated the collection of over $230,080 for 232 victims of crimes such as homicide, robbery, sexual abuse, and assault.

Reimbursed expenses included medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, personal property, moving expenses, temporary housing, and transportation costs.

“Virginia Beach has undergone quite a few changes in recent years, and the improved services to victims are evident all of the way to Richmond,” said Ware.  “You all have a lot to be proud of.”

Handmade Greeting Cards

Do you remember what the nicest thing once was about going to the mailbox? A greeting card!

In our younger days those birthday cards sometimes held a little bit of cash from Grandmom and Grandpop or an aunt from out of town. I still have many of those store bought cards that have been sent through the years.  The money enclosed many years ago has long been spent...on junk I probably didn't need. Cards were always something all of us looked forward to.

But those are the days that seem to be almost gone having been left behind because of modern technology and email making it more "convenient". An emailed card never put a smile on my face like getting a card in the mail did.

If you send cards quite often or if you are bored with the cards sold in the stores today take a look at this website
www.handmadecardsbykaren.com

The cards you see on the website are ALL handmade by Karen Rees Freiberg. Name sound familiar? That's because it is. Karen, known as Karen Rees grew up in Pocomoke and graduated with many of us in the class of '71 from the Pocomoke High School.

Karen makes each and every card by hand. There's a card for every occasion and most times 2 or 3 designs for any occasion you can think of. And if you have an occasion she hasn't thought of and you need a special card send her an email with your idea. She will be more than glad to hand craft a card that will put a smile that special someones face.

All the information you may need is on the website.

Good Luck, Courtney!

Prayers and wishes for the very best of luck go today to Courtney Bloxom as she travels to Baltimore, Maryland where she will be a patient at Kenney Krieger Rehabilitation Center for the next couple of months. As always, Courtney will have her mom Becky by her side as she has been through this long journey since May 2010 when Courtney suffered brain injuries from a single vehicle accident.

Since a few days from that horrible night, while Courtney was unresponsive, her Mother Becky rolled up her sleeves and has done what we Mothers hope to never have to endure....carring for a child and believing in God when there seemed to be no hope. Becky Bloxom is a woman of steel. She has kept an open journal since a few days from Courtney's accident. Becky has let the world know her true feelings, her happiness, disappointments and hopes.

Courtney and Becky haven't been without support. It takes a mighty stong family unit to hold it all together and that's what they have. Courtney is blessed to have such a loving and caring brother and sister. And it always makes me smile when I read from Becky's daily writings that Courtney's has made noises prompted by no one else but her Father. - Yes, a daughter will do that for a dad.

Friends, family and extended family have kept close watch on Courtney through the many months. Many prayers have been said and still contiue to flow. Though so much better now than she was a few months ago Courtney still has that long road to travel. She's much stronger now than she was back in May of 2010 and her Mother has just as much determination now as she ever did. We are all hoping that this trip to Baltimore is the last major step for this family to take before Courtney can go home.

The next couple of months will be six days a week of advanced therapy for Courtney, compared to the 3 days per week she had been receiving in Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center. That's a big difference and every day will put both Courtney and Becky through the grind, I'm sure. Courtney never seems to give up. Becky never seems to give up on Courtney....none of us do.........Becky has hope and never gives up on God. She'll tell you so.

Come home soon...

Please keep Courtney and her family in your prayers.

TIME MACHINE ... Eastern Shore Clay Eaters?

(Reader-friendly viewing of newspaper archives material)

( In searching newspaper archives I occasionally come across an item that raises a flag as to its authenticity. It makes one wonder if such items were, in their day, like hoax items that flood the Internet today. The following item made its rounds in more than one newspaper, and was a front page news story in the 1885 publication mentioned below. Was it legend..hoax..or fact?)

December, 1885

(Reno Evening Gazette- Reno, Nevada)

Eastern Shore Clay Eaters

Of the "clay eaters" on the eastern coast of Maryland, it may be said that they are not reptiles or animals, but people- real human beings, most of whom have never seen a railroad, heard a locomotive whistle, or voted the Democratic or any other ticket. It is hard to understand the appetite that craves clay as a diet. Some people refuse to believe that people can live and eat clay, but a reputable and truthful physician who recently contacted a severe case of the shaking ague in making a tour of eastern shore swamps, declares that these peculiar specimens of the Maryland population do eat clay and have a passion or habit of chewing it like lovers of hasheesh. There is a kind of clay in that section that is oily, like putty, with little sand or grit in it. Dr. S. P. Denisen, the physician referred to, says that clay-eating swampers are miserable specimens of humanity. With legs that are mere sticks, narrow hips, depressed chests, pot bellies, and blush-yellow complexions, they present about the lowest type of the white race found in the United States. The swampers who acquire the habit of eating clay are generally short lived, but the other inhabitants of the Eastern Shore swamps are as hardy as others and as ignorant as Hottentots. Their morals are lax, and a man and woman will live together and rear a family without troubling themselves about a marriage ceremony. Many of their houses are built on piles, and they reach them in boats through the lagoons. Though they shake with the ague half a year, and have skins the color of saffron, they seem to be insured against any other disease, for it is rare to hear of any other sickness in the swamps than ague. It is astonishing what quantities of quinine and whiskey are consumed by these people. The women, who are not clay eaters, chew tobacco and drink corn juice the same as men. In the summer the women and children gather huckleberries, which are plentiful in the vicinity. The men go off in the woods and make shingles, which they sell to the nearest country stores for cheap wearing apparel, corn meal, bacon, quinine, and whiskey. These people are never reached by the tax collector, the preacher, the book agent, the politician, or the lightning rod agent, and when they are not shaking with chills they are happy and contented.

Flags Down Train,

Water Stops Fire

POCOMOKE CITY, MD., May 20 (AP)- Opportunity blew a whistle for the Pocomoke City volunteer fire department.

Battling a lumber yard blaze four miles south of here, the department ran out of water. Undaunted, firemen flagged down a Pennsylvania railroad freight train, drew water from its boilers, and brought the fire under control with but one shed destroyed.

April, 1956

Jerry Miles was assigned by the Baltimore Orioles to the Thomson team in the Georgia State League. The 18-year-old Parksley, Va. righthander was a standout pitcher on Pocomoke City's 1955 Central Shore League team.

Footnote: Miles was in an automobile accident during the winter of 1957 and he later requested the Orioles to place him on the voluntary retired list for the upcoming season. No Information was found about his future activity in baseball.

Four Arrested for Eastern Shore Arsons

James M. Wood

Five fires set between Sept. 2011 and Nov. 2011

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - State police have arrested four people in connection with a series of arson cases on the Eastern Shore.

Two vacant homes and three brush fires were set between Sept. 23, 2011 and Nov. 30, 2011.

A three month investigation led to the Jan. 6 arrests of James M. Wood, 24, two 17-year-old males and one 15-year-old male.

Charges against the suspects include arson and conspiracy to commit a felony.

“Aside from being extremely dangerous, intentionally setting fires even when no one is injured is a serious crime in Virginia,” says F/Sgt. Paul J. Fowler III, BCI Chesapeake Field Office.

According to police, all five arsons were connected.

New trial for Skylor Harmon will be considered

Written by
Scott Muska
Staff Writer

SNOW HILL -- A request for a new trial by a 19-year-old convicted of first-degree murder will be considered at his sentencing hearing.

Skylor Dupree Harmon of Pocomoke City shot Reginald Handy Jr. with a military-grade assault rifle from a distance on a dark Pocomoke City street in May 2010. When his guilty verdict was announced, he showed no emotion and turned to family in the courtroom to say, "It ain't over yet."

He attempted to make good on his statement with a letter he sent to Circuit Court Judge Thomas C. Groton III after his conviction that asked for a new trial because of incompetence of counsel, insufficient evidence and the fact that photographs taken days before trial were allowed to be included as evidence. Harmon also took exception to testimony from Torrance Davis, a witness who testified against him during the trial.

Groton wrote back to Harmon to advise him he will consider the request during the sentence hearing. Their exchange of letters is in Harmon's case file in the courthouse.

In Harmon's trial, the state's attorney presented evidence that convinced the jury to convict him on several felony counts, including first- and second-degree murder. Harmon was initially tried in July, but that trial ended in a mistrial when a jury couldn't agree on a verdict.

Harmon's uncle, Alexander Crippen, was originally charged with killing Handy, but ballistics experts indicated the gun he had fired the night of the murder had not dispensed the single bullet that had severed Handy's aorta. Crippen was later convicted of attempted murder, and an investigation revealed Harmon had shot Handy with a .223-caliber assault rifle from about 65 yards away while his uncle was in an argument with Handy.

According to testimony, Crippen had engaged in a physical altercation with Davis, Handy's cousin, the week before the murder, and Harmon had tried to join the fight.

"Skylor Harmon had his uncle's back," Worcester County State's Attorney Beau Oglesby said during his closing argument in October, during which he referred repeatedly to a "beef" Harmon and Crippen had with Davis. He said it led to Handy's death.

Delegate Lynwood Lewis ~ Town Hall Meeting

Last night at 7 p.m., citizens gathered in the Chincoteague Community Center to hear Delegate Lynwood Lewis finish his last of three town hall meetings before the commencement of the 2012 legislative session. In front of a crowd that Representative Lewis referred to as the largest of the weeks series, he outlined some key issues he predicted would be brought up in the General Assembly. Present among these were Governor McDonnell's proposed budget plans, the possibility of uranium mining in Chatham, Virginia, and Richmond's continued support of the NASA program on Wallops Island.

Delegate Lewis began the town hall meeting by elaborating upon the proposed budget McDonnell has outlined for the next two years. The eighty-five billion dollar, two-year budget is rather large for Virginia, but includes various 'rainy-day funds' to deal with potential cuts in spending at a federal level. Lewis acknowledged that unlike the national government, Virginia is required by its state constitution to maintain a balanced budget. Although Virginia has fared the recession better than most states, the growth rate is currently at three percent, down significantly from the average of six to eight percent. Governor McDonnell has borrowed 3.5 billion dollars to jumpstart the transportation sector, which has previously been what Lewis referred to as a 'self-financing government enterprise.'

To pay for this, the governor would like to take money from the general fund, which has historically been used for education, public safety, and healthcare. McDonnell justifies using part of the general fund because transportation is a core service provided by the government. Lewis's inclination, however, is it would not be good to allow the reallocation of funds because it would put transportation in competition with education and public safety. The proposed budget, House Bill 30, will not be voted on, most likely, until the last day of the General Assembly session in March.

Discussion then shifted away from the state of the economy onto a brighter subject matter- uranium mining in Virginia. Delegate Lewis described how mining in Chatham, Virginia may very well affect us here on the Eastern Shore. Under the farm of Walter Kohl in Pittsylvania County lies the largest untapped source of uranium in North America. Discovered in the eighties, it has remained relatively untouched because the low price of the substance made it economically unfeasible to drill. However, thanks to China's accumulation of the mineral, prices have skyrocketed, making the economic impact of 5-8 billion dollars worth of uranium undeniable. How does this Uranium jackpot affect us? Unfortunately it's not the money that could leak into the eastern part of the state. The surface water from land surrounding the uranium fields runs into Lake Gaston, which serves as the predominant water supply for Virginia Beach and parts of Norfolk. A drilling accident in that part of the state could contaminate the water supply and lead to catastrophic consequences.

The National Academy of Science released a report in mid-December concerning the health risks associated with uranium drilling in this region. In the months to come the General Assembly will be tasked with evaluating the report and outlining the safest and most beneficial regulations.

Also of great importance to the Eastern Shore, Delegate Lewis spoke of Richmond's continued support of the NASA facility on Wallops Island. Governor McDonnell has earmarked four million dollars for the completion of the launch pad, and Lewis is hopeful that more funds will become available as the budget is outlined more comprehensively in the weeks to come.

Audit of the Federal Reserve Reveals $16 Trillion in Secret Bailouts

The first ever GAO(Government Accountability Office) audit of the Federal Reserve was carried out in the past few months due to the Ron Paul, Alan Grayson Amendment to the Dodd-Frank bill, which passed last year. Jim DeMint, a Republican Senator, and Bernie Sanders, an independent Senator, led the charge for a Federal Reserve audit in the Senate, but watered down the original language of the house bill(HR1207), so that a complete audit would not be carried out. Ben Bernanke(pictured to the right), Alan Greenspan, and various other bankers vehemently opposed the audit and lied to Congress about the effects an audit would have on markets. Nevertheless, the results of the first audit in the Federal Reserve’s nearly 100 year history were posted on Senator Sander’s webpage earlier this morning.

What was revealed in the audit was startling:

$16,000,000,000,000.00 had been secretly given out to US banks and corporations and foreign banks everywhere from France to Scotland. From the period between December 2007 and June 2010, the Federal Reserve had secretly bailed out many of the world’s banks, corporations, and governments. The Federal Reserve likes to refer to these secret bailouts as an all-inclusive loan program, but virtually none of the money has been returned and it was loaned out at 0% interest. Why the Federal Reserve had never been public about this or even informed the United States Congress about the $16 trillion dollar bailout is obvious - the American public would have been outraged to find out that the Federal Reserve bailed out foreign banks while Americans were struggling to find jobs.

To place $16 trillion into perspective, remember that GDP of the United States is only $14.12 trillion. The entire national debt of the United States government spanning its 200+ year history is "only" $14.5 trillion. The budget that is being debated so heavily in Congress and the Senate is "only" $3.5 trillion. Take all of the outrage and debate over the $1.5 trillion deficit into consideration, and swallow this Red pill: There was no debate about whether $16,000,000,000,000 would be given to failing banks and failing corporations around the world.

In late 2008, the TARP Bailout bill was passed and loans of $800 billion were given to failing banks and companies. That was a blatant lie considering the fact that Goldman Sachs alone received 814 billion dollars. As is turns out, the Federal Reserve donated $2.5 trillion to Citigroup, while Morgan Stanley received $2.04 trillion. The Royal Bank of Scotland and Deutsche Bank, a German bank, split about a trillion and numerous other banks received hefty chunks of the $16 trillion.
"This is a clear case of socialism for the rich and rugged, you’re-on-your-own individualism for everyone else." - Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
When you have conservative Republican stalwarts like Jim DeMint(R-SC) and Ron Paul(R-TX) as well as self identified Democratic socialists like Bernie Sanders all fighting against the Federal Reserve, you know that it is no longer an issue of Right versus Left. When you have every single member of the Republican Party in Congress and progressive Congressmen like Dennis Kucinich sponsoring a bill to audit the Federal Reserve, you realize that the Federal Reserve is an entity onto itself, which has no oversight and no accountability.

Americans should be swelled with anger and outrage at the abysmal state of affairs when an unelected group of bankers can create money out of thin air and give it out to megabanks and supercorporations like Halloween candy. If the Federal Reserve and the bankers who control it believe that they can continue to devalue the savings of Americans and continue to destroy the US economy, they will have to face the realization that their trillion dollar printing presses will eventually plunder the world economy.

The list of institutions that received the most money from the Federal Reserve can be found on page 131 of the GAO Audit and are as follows..
Citigroup: $2.5 trillion ($2,500,000,000,000)
Morgan Stanley: $2.04 trillion ($2,040,000,000,000)
Merrill Lynch: $1.949 trillion ($1,949,000,000,000)
Bank of America: $1.344 trillion ($1,344,000,000,000)
Barclays PLC (United Kingdom): $868 billion ($868,000,000,000)
Bear Sterns: $853 billion ($853,000,000,000)
Goldman Sachs: $814 billion ($814,000,000,000)
Royal Bank of Scotland (UK): $541 billion ($541,000,000,000)
JP Morgan Chase: $391 billion ($391,000,000,000)
Deutsche Bank (Germany): $354 billion ($354,000,000,000)
UBS (Switzerland): $287 billion ($287,000,000,000)
Credit Suisse (Switzerland): $262 billion ($262,000,000,000)
Lehman Brothers: $183 billion ($183,000,000,000)
Bank of Scotland (United Kingdom): $181 billion ($181,000,000,000)
BNP Paribas (France): $175 billion ($175,000,000,000)
and many many more including banks in Belgium of all places

Texas — Police shot and killed an eighth-grader in the hallway of his middle school

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Police shot and killed an eighth-grader in the hallway of his middle school Wednesday after the boy brandished what looked like a handgun and pointed it at officers. It turned out to be a pellet gun that closely resembled the real thing.

Fifteen-year-old Jaime Gonzalez "had plenty of opportunities to lower the gun and listen to the officers' orders, and he didn't want to," Interim Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez said.

Shortly before the confrontation, the boy had walked into a classroom and punched a random boy in the nose for no apparent reason, police said. Investigators did not know why he pulled out the weapon.
"We think it looks like this was a way to bring attention to himself," the police chief said. He said the officers' actions were justified and no one else was hurt.

Authorities declined to share what the boy said before being shot.

Bitter Cold For First Meteor Shower of 2012

Quadrantid Meteor Shower peaks Wednesday morning before dawn

If you can bear the brutally cold wind chills in the teens early Wednesday morning before sunrise, you could be treated to the first great meteor shower of 2012. This will also be the first good shower to view in months because the bright Moon previously interfered with optimal viewing of other showers in 2011.

The Quadrantid Meteor Shower peaks early Wednesday, January 4th, particularly between 2 a.m. and Dawn. At this peak, as many as 100 meteors per hour could be visible! Our visibility should be pretty good in central Virginia with clearing skies and the moon setting around 3 a.m. Best meteor shower visibilities are always a distance away from high concentrations of man-made light. Those of you outside of the cities should see the most meteors. Here's a sky map of where to look (the point of origin from our perspective on Earth of the meteors...look northeast and up):
Notice that the meteors appear to come at us from the constellation of Quadrans Muralis (in between Draco and Bootes), leading to the shower's name. The meteors associated with the Quadrantids originate from asteroid "2003 EH1," which itself is probably a broken piece off of a comet from several hundred years ago. This meteor shower was first documented in 1825. NASA expects the debris from that asteroid to impact Earth's atmosphere at a speed of about 90,000 mph, and disintegrate 50 miles above the ground.

However, please be aware that Wednesday early morning temperatures will fall into the teens and low 20s, with wind chills in the low teens. If you plan to watch this meteor shower for a couple hours, make sure you are well-equipped for the cold weather, paying particular attention to keeping your hands, feet, neck, face and head warm! Take extra blankets, water, snacks, and maybe some hot chocolate to enjoy while you stargaze. You can click here to read more about the bitter cold lingering through Thursday morning.

Other meteor watching tips:
*Allow at least ten to 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark.
*Lie flat on the ground and scan the sky, not focusing on any specific point.
*Look for flashes of swiftly moving light from the northeast streaking across the sky. Some of these may appear to have various colors other than just a bright white.

TIME MACHINE ... New Year's Past

(Reader-friendly viewing of newspaper archives material)

December 31, 1966

If you were planning to go out to welcome in the New Year 1967 here's a look at some of the local New Year's Eve activities you could consider:

A "Chop Hop" at the Pocomoke armory featuring music by the Midnight Walkers and with master of ceremonies Choppy Layton and Wayne Powell...The Orbits appearing at Salisbury's Northwood Bar...Dancing at the Delmar Moose Lodge featuring music with Joey Welz...The True Tones providing the music at Salisbury's Eastside Men's Club Dance...Richard Maltby's Orchestra in Salisbury at the Civic Center's New Year's Eve Ball And Breakfast.

ACROSS THE USA

January 1, 1901

On the the first day of the Twentieth Century an Iowa newspaper, The Davenport Republican, reported on the comments of speakers at its area churches on the previous evening, the last evening of the Nineteenth Century.

Some brief excerpts:

From a judge... "Certainly we have not yet gone too far in strengthening the federal government. -- Somewhere, however, must be set the limits of this centralized power, at some point the line must be firmly drawn between the nation and the states. Where this line shall be fixed no one can safely say in advance. It is one of the grave problems we must leave for solution to the courage, wisdom, and patriotism of our children. -- There is some little we may say with assurance of the future. It will be what our children and their descendants make it. To such young people as hear me and who shall take part in molding the coming century I wish to say that you will not do so well as your fathers and mothers have done in life work unless you do better than they did. You have advancement they did not possess. -- We have now in every considerably town a high school where a course of study is pursued equivalent to that of Dartmouth college when it graduated Daniel Webster in 1801. Our state with some others has made provision for establishing free public library in every school district. This, with the university extension courses, so popular throughout the country, and which are continually developing, mark an era in advanced education. Eventually it will bring the college courses to the door of every earnest seeker for knowledge."

From a lawyer... "By firing my imagination, giving it the reins and allowing it to run rampant, I might predict that in 2000 the stars and stripes will float in sole and unquestioned sovereignty from the North Pole to Cape Horn. I might speculate on the downfall of monarchies and the rise of new republics. I might be right, I might be wrong. I might be so bold and conceited to announce to you that in the coming century men, with artificial wings, will fly like birds through the air. I might contend that our whole system of transportation will be overthrown and a new one put in action. I might even be so rash as to predict that the day is not far distant when mankind will know no disease, no sickness. Trusting in the blessed trinity of chance, accident, or mistake for the fulfillment of my prophecy, I might say that the science of medicine will be so revolutionized that medical assistance will be required only to prevent disease, not to cure. I might be right, I might be wrong, it matters not. Whatever speculation we may make upon the future, we at least know enough to know the past. The world has learned that no man is good enough to govern another man excepting by that other man's consent, and in my humble judgment thereon hangs the destiny of the nations."
