UPDATE: On 03 December2013 Michael Townsend from Princess Anne, MD was sentenced by Judge Purnell in Worcester County Court for the car thefts and car break-ins that occurred on 23 April 2013 in The Jenkins Orchard development in Pocomoke City. Townsend received 30 months in jail for the crimes.

Virginia State Police Investigating Homicide In Parksley

PARKSLEY, Va. - State Police are investigating a Thursday morning homicide in Accomack County, after a car reportedly crashed into a Parksley home.

Virginia State Police say they received a call on around 10:45 AM after a vehicle with an unresponsive driver hit a house on the 27,000 block of Gargatha Landing Road. Police say once on scene they discovered that the driver, 35-year-old Steven Pettit, of Accomac, had been fatally wounded with a gun shot to the head.

VSP are calling this an active homicide investigation. Details are still limited at this time. More information as it becomes available.

SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN PRINCESS ANNE MURDER

(Princess Anne, MD) –Maryland State Police criminal investigators arrested two suspects today in the murder of Adrian Lurele Marshall in Princess Anne.

Those arrested are identified as Brandon Michael Early, 17, of the 500 block of Random Drive in Baltimore and Cory Hamilton, 28, of the 400 block of Liberty Street in Salisbury, Maryland. Both men are charged with first and second degree murder, and robbery.

The victim, identified as Adrian Lurele Marshall, 35, of the 11,000 block of Greenwood School Road in Princess Anne, Maryland was found dead in his home on Thanksgiving morning. The autopsy determined Marshall died from multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of his death was ruled a homicide. 

Early was arrested at his home in Baltimore without incident at 2:00pm this afternoon. Hamilton was arrested at his place of employment in Salisbury without incident at 11:00 a.m this morning. Both men are awaiting an appearance before the Somerset County District Court Commissioner.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, November 28, 2013, state troopers responded to Marshall’s residence after receiving a 911 call, reporting a possible shooting. Upon their arrival, Marshall was found lying in the kitchen area of his duplex style residence. 

Detectives from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Continuing assistance was provided by state police investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division from Berlin, Salisbury and Princess Anne, the Gang Enforcement Unit, the Gun Enforcement Unit, and the State Apprehension Team. Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded to gather and process evidence at the scene. The Somerset County State’s Attorney also responded. 

Investigators continue to interview witnesses and urge anyone with information to call Crime Solvers of the Lower Eastern Shore at 410-548-1776.

Worcester County Sheriff Office Deputy Stops Vehicle Traveling Over 100 MPH

On November 28, 2013 at 0143 hours, a Worcester County Sheriff Office Deputy received a call in reference to a vehicle that was traveling west bound on Route 90 near Ocean Parkway at 100 MPH.

The Deputy located the vehicle and stopped it in the area of RT 90 at Rt 113. 

The Deputy could smell a strong odor of burnt Marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The driver was identified  as a juvenile from Berlin. The driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs. 

A search of the vehicle produced suspected marijuana. The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled dangerous substance and driving under the influence of alcohol. The Juvenile was later released to the custody of his father.

HEROIN DISTRIBUTION INVESTIGATION

OCPD NARCOTICS DETECTIVES CONCLUDE HEROIN DISTRIBUTION INVESTIGATION

(December 4, 2013) – On November 26, 2013, at approximately 4:55 p.m. the Ocean City Police Narcotics Unit, with the assistance of the Special Enforcement Unit, concluded a heroin distribution investigation with the arrest of Timmy Morris, 30. Morris has no fixed address.

Morris was arrested after a three week undercover investigation in which detectives made purchases of heroin from Morris. Police arrested Morris in the area of 58th Street and Coastal Highway without incident. At the time of arrest, Morris was in possession of 39 bags of heroin, a small amount of crack cocaine and over $300 in US currency.

A second subject, Mathew Kyle Anderson, 23, of Selbyville, DE was also arrested during this incident. Anderson was with Morris at the time of his arrest and was found to be in possession of Suboxone.

Morris has been charged by Ocean City Police with three counts of heroin possession, two counts of distribution of heroin, and possession with intent to distribute heroin. Anderson was charged with possession of Suboxone. 

Both were seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner.

 Morris was transferred to the Worcester County Jail on $50,000 bond and Anderson was released on his own recognizance.

MILLSBORO MAN ARRESTED FOR KEG THEFTS

(December 3, 2013) – Beginning in July 2013 through November 2013, Ocean City Police received several reports involving thefts of empty beer kegs from bars and restaurants in the north end of Ocean City. The empty kegs were stolen from the rear of each bar and restaurant that was victimized.

During the investigation, officers made contact with Rehoboth Beach Police Department detectives who shared information about similar reports from bars and restaurants in Rehoboth Beach. Together with Rehoboth Beach police, officers were able to determine that the suspect, Jason J. Wilz, 33, of Millsboro, DE, committed the thefts in both areas.

Wilz has been charged by Ocean City police with second and fourth degree burglary, two counts of theft ($1,000-$10,000), two counts of theft scheme ($1,000-$10,000) and three counts of theft under $1,000. Wilz is currently in custody at Sussex Correctional Institute in Georgetown, DE, for similar charges from Rehoboth Beach police.

Ocean City police would like to remind our local bars and restaurants to take the proper precautions with empty beer kegs. 

Owners are reminded to secure the kegs by putting them in a locked cage, using a chain or keeping them in a secure location within the establishment to avoid becoming a victim.

Indictment In Murder Of Two-Year Old / Accomack County

James Martinez Snead

According to Sheriff Todd Godwin, on April 30, 2013 at approximately 10:52 am, the Accomack County Sheriffs Office received a report of a child injured from a fall at the Mill Run Apartments in Belle Haven.

 Rescue personnel from the Community Fire Company in Exmore responded to the scene and transported the child to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital where the child was pronounced dead.

The child was identified as 2 y/o Jasheena Bull of Belle Haven.

An autopsy was conducted on May 1st at the Medical Examiners Office in Norfolk at which time the cause of death was listed as pending.

Victoria Mae Joynes

On August 14th, warrants were issued against 36 y/o Victoria Mae Joynes and 31 y/o James Martinez Snead, both of Belle Haven, for ABUSE AND NEGLECT OF JASHEENA BULL.

Victoria Joynes was arrested on August 14th and released on a $5,000 secured bond. 

James Martinez Snead was arrested on August 15th and incarcerated in the Accomack County Jail on a $6,500 secured bond.

Upon receipt of the completed autopsy report, Investigators determined that the cause of death in this case was homicide. 

On December 2nd, James Martinez Snead was indicted by an Accomack County Grand Jury for an additional charge of 2ND DEGREE MURDER. Snead was served the indictment on December 3rd and is currently incarcerated in the Accomack County Jail with bond denied.

Information Sought On Vehicle In Connection With Princess Anne Murder

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - New details are beginning to emerge after an alleged murder happened in Princess Anne early Thanksgiving morning.

These photos to the right, are of what Maryland State Police believe to be, a newer model Hyundai Elantra with tinted windows, reportedly connected to the murder of 35-year-old Adrian Marshall. The vehicle is seen entering and then leaving an apartment complex down the street from Marshall's home.

Police responded to reports of the shooting at the 11,000 block of Greenwood School Road around 1:00 AM last Thursday morning. They found Marshall, who was later pronounced dead, suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Investigators are offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Call Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776 with information.

Somerset County Sheriff’s Office  Most Recent Arrests

Lshea Marcel Jefferson of Temple Hills, Alante Raynard Walker of Waldorf, Andre Antoine Walker of Temple Hills, Destinee Justice Wright of Upper Marlboro, and Wesley Wilkes Carter of Silver Springs, arrested 11-23-13 for possession of suspected marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

All five subjects were released on signatures pending court actions. The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop conducted by deputies in the area of UMES Blvd, Princess Anne. During the stop, deputies recovered suspected marijuana from inside their vehicle. 


Mark Elliott Thompson of Silver Springs, arrested 11-29-13 for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving impaired by alcohol, and driving under the influence of alcohol per se. Thomson was released on signature pending court actions. The arrest was the result of a traffic stop conducted by deputies in the area of Ocean Highway, Westover. 


Eddie Stewart Neal of Crisfield, arrested 11-30-13 on a warrant for violation of probation. Neal was later returned to the Somerset County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.

In an opinion-editorial article published in National Review, December 2, Richard Douglas, Maryland lawyer, businessman and Iraq veteran, said squabbling elected officials in Annapolis – led by Attorney General Doug Gansler and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown -- are motivated by personal ambition and politics rather than duty when it comes to implementing the Affordable Care Act in Maryland.

“To the detriment of shell-shocked Maryland consumers, Gansler and Brown have chosen to battle each other instead of confronting the challenges of the health care law’s implementation,” said Douglas.  “Governor O’Malley, for his part, belatedly and quietly acknowledged responsibility for low Maryland enrollment numbers while Marylanders celebrated Thanksgiving.     With our citizens’ health care options in a state of flux, Maryland desperately needs leaders who take their current duties seriously instead of preparing for the next campaign.”

In the National Review article, Douglas notes that Maryland enrollment rates under the Affordable Care Act badly trail other states with Democratic governors including California, Connecticut, Kentucky and Washington.   A unit within the Office of Attorney of General’s Consumer Protection Division takes credit for assisting patients with health care insurance problems and the transition to the ACA but provides no coherent explanation of actual accomplishments.

"Whether one supports the President's signature legislation or opposes it, Mr. Gansler had a duty to warn Maryland consumers about what to expect with this law,” said Douglas.   “But the Attorney General, Governor O'Malley, and Lieutenant Governor Brown have all let Maryland down."

In 2012, Douglas carried 11 of Maryland's 24 jurisdictions in the Maryland Republican primary for the U.S. Senate in his first bid for elected office.  He has been an active member of the Maryland bar in good standing since 1991, primarily in Montgomery and Prince George's counties.  He has notable pro bono legal experience and has been a volunteer lay chaplain for Spanish-speaking persons at the District of Columbia Jail.   Douglas speaks Spanish fluently and has lived in Mexico. A Navy veteran, he served in Iraq in 2006 and in the submarine force in the 1970s.

Douglas is evaluating a 2014 run for Attorney General.   In 2010, the GOP did not field a candidate for the office.

Blood Bank of Delmarva To Host Boots and Badges Competition

Blood Bank of Delmarva will host a Boots and Badges Hero Drive from Monday, Dec. 2 to Saturday, Dec. 14. 

The drive creates a friendly competition between the police and fire departments on the Delmarva Peninsula to see which arm of the civil services can bring in the most blood donations during the two week period.

Boots and Badges is a fun way for police and fire departments and EMS to compete in a life saving competition, said Michael Waite, Director of Marketing and Community Relations for Blood Bank of Delmarva. We all appreciate the work these everyday heroes do for the citizens of Delmarva each day. Boots and Badges is just another way for them to work together towards saving lives in our community.

Boots and Badges is open to the public as well as members of the police or fire departments. Blood donors can show their support for one or the other by filling out a Hero Card when they go to any of the donation centers or community mobile blood drives to give blood.

In addition to being a fun, light-hearted competition, Boots and Badges will help us sustain our blood supply during this holiday season, Waite said. We typically see a decrease in donation around this time of year because so many people are involved in holiday activities.

 The competition will be a way to ensure we have the 350 donors we need each day to serve the needs of the 16 hospitals on Delmarva.

Hunters For The Hungry Begins 16th Season

The Eastern Shore Chapter of the Virginia Hungers for the Hungry will begin their 16th season of service to residents of the Shore. 

The program raises funds necessary to pay the processing cost for deer donated by local hunters. The deer is processed into packages of ground meat and distributed through the Food Bank in Onley.

This years program will begin receiving deer on November 2 through the deer hunting season. The deer may be taken to refrigerated trailers at the Food Bank in Tasley or B&B Market in Machipongo. They also may be taken to the local processor, Brent Powell in Wachapreague. The deer must be field dressed and properly registered.

The program pays $45 per deer processing costs discounted from the going price of $80 a deer. Currently there are matching funds available for local businesses, clubs and groups. This organization is a 501-c-3, making donations deductible. The management expense is very low to maximize funds available for processing.

A local chapter is requesting both deer and financial donations to allow the program to continue this year.

Accomack County Arson Suspect Tonya Bundick Back In Jail

(December 2, 2013) Accomack County arson suspect Tonya Bundick, who was out on bond, was arrested Monday after being indicted by an Accomack County Grand Jury on 62 counts of arson, according to Accomack County Clerk of Court. 

According to defense attorney Allan Zaleski, he will ask for a change of venue for his client on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.

UP TO $2,000 REWARD OFFERED FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO ARREST IN PRINCESS ANNE MURDER

(PRINCESS ANNE, MD) – A monetary reward of up to $2,000 is being offered to anyone with relevant information leading police to an arrest in the murder of a Somerset County man found dead in his home in Princess Anne on Thanksgiving. 

    The victim is identified as Adrian Lurele Marshall, 35, of the 11,000 block of Greenwood School Road in Princess Anne, Maryland.  Autopsy results indicate Marshall suffered multiple gunshots wounds to his upper body.   

    At approximately 1:00 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, November 28, 2013,  state troopers responded to Marshall’s residence after receiving a 911 call, reporting a possible shooting.  Upon arrival, state troopers from the Princess Anne Barrack, found Marshall lying in the kitchen area of his duplex style residence.   

    Detectives from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation with continuing assistance from state police investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division from Berlin and Princess Anne Barracks and crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.  The Somerset County State’s Attorney also responded to the scene. 


    Investigators continue to interview witnesses and urge anyone with information to call Crime Solvers of the Lower Eastern Shore at 410-548-1776.

Their new project will bring together young females in an encouraging and safe environment where the Discovery Center can promote positive self body and assist young women with pursuing their science based career goals. They are looking for an intern who is passionate about assisting young women with embracing positive body image and self respect and willing to network and reach out to potential sponsors and health care professionals.

Pocomoke Christmas Parade ~ TONIGHT !!

Monday night, December 2nd, 2013, 
We will celebrate our 41st year as Pocomoke City will be transformed into a “Winter Wonderland” as Pocomoke City plays host to one of Delmarva’s largest nighttime Christmas parades. 

Always held on the first Monday night after Thanksgiving, the Pocomoke parade has become an Eastern Shore tradition and will attract over 100 units from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia along with thousands of spectators.

Each year the parade features marching bands representing high and middle schools from seven counties in three states. Also featured will be beautifully decorated and lighted floats entered by schools, civic organizations, churches, and commercial enterprises.

Clowns, marching units, fire departments, equestrian units, and of course Santa Claus will round out the two-hour event, slated to kick-off at 7:00 p.m. sharp. The route will take the parade north on Market Street beginning at 14th Street and ending at the Pocomoke River.

Professional judges, including members of the National Judges Association (NJA), will score entries in 10 different categories. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded immediately following the event to the top entries in each category.

A special thanks to the community of Pocomoke City and surrounding areas for the recent support given to us to continue this great tradition that has been a part of the town for over 40 years.

In the event of inclement weather, the parade will be postponed until Tuesday, December 3rd at 7:00 p.m.

Voters Revolt, Wives Elected

EASTVILLE, VA. (UP)- A write-in revolt at the polls has bounced the top town officials of Eastville and elected their wives.

Only one was an exception. He lost out to his mother.

Election day, Wednesday, was just a quiet summer day for the citizens of this little town on Virginia's lower eastern shore. The shoo-in ticket of seven men on the ballot was unopposed.

About 110 citizens were eligible to vote, but only 24 did. Many were out of town watching the international naval review across Chesapeake Bay.

Then the vote was counted.

William R. Shannonhouse, candidate for mayor, lost to his wife Mary by a whisker. He got 11 votes. She got 12.

Each of five candidates for the town council lost to his wife by two votes. The sixth candidate lost to his mother by one.

The results were so sensational they broke up a bridge party. No one appeared happy.

The new mayor, Mrs. William R. Shannonhouse, put down her cards and called for an investigation.

"None of the women were trying to become candidates," she said indignantly. "We don't feel for a minute, we should fill our husbands' shoes."

School Holds Fete In Pocomoke City

POCOMOKE CITY, Md.- Stephen Long Junior High School had its field ball and soccer ball homecoming game against Worcester Junior High School of Snow Hill, Md. on Dec. 7.

The girls won the field ball game 4-0; and the boys lost the soccer game 0-2.

The homecoming queen was Miss Gloria Finney; and her attendants were Misses Louella Godwon, Beaulah Timmons, Betty Waters and Recilla Hughes.

The following evening, there was a Sadie Hawkins dance given by the physical education department.

The queen and her attendants were awarded prizes by their physical education instructor, Miss Georganna Showell, for their achievement in raising money in the contest.

The money was used to buy dance uniforms and a radio-phonograph. The five candidates raised $148.74.

The condition of affairs in the lower peninsula, growing out of the protracted freeze, is growing worse. On Smith's Island the people are cutting down the few trees for fuel and killing the cattle for food. At Crisfield there is great destitution at the sailors' boarding-houses. Parties of men have ventured to walk across Tangier Sound to Smith's Island. Throughout the state yesterday morning was about the coldest of the winter. In Worcester County a temperature of 14 below zero is reported. Sinepuxent and Chincoteague Bays are frozen and communication with the island is cut off. Food and fuel there are scarce and the situation is becoming alarming.

Pocomoke City residents were remembering Benjamin Cohen who passed away at age 74. Mr. Cohen, an accountant and tax consultant in Pocomoke for 47 years, was a charter member and past president and secretary of the Pocomoke Kiwanis Club, member of the Worcester County Bingo Commission, and one of the founders and a past president of the Synagogue in Pocomoke City. For many years he also operated Modern Office Supply on Willow Street.

IRON FOR FRUIT TREES- Mr. Chas. W. Long, of Somerset County, Md., has tested the theory that iron driven into apple trees will promote fruit-bearing. He has a winter golden pippen which never held its fruit or bore heavily until some old horseshoes placed in the forks of the tree became imbedded in it. Now it bears abundantly, and the fruit is of the best quality.

MURDER IN PRINCESS ANNE BEING INVESTIGATED BY STATE POLICE

(PRINCESS ANNE, MD) – The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit continues to investigate the murder of a Somerset County man found dead in his home in Princess Anne.

The victim is identified as Adrian Lurele Marshall, 35, of the 11,000 block of Greenwood School Road in Princess Anne, Maryland. Emergency service personnel pronounced Marshall dead at the scene.
At approximately 1:00 a.m. this morning, a police received a 911 call reporting a possible shooting at Marshall’s residence in Princess Anne. Upon arrival, state troopers from the Princess Anne Barrack, found the victim lying in the kitchen area of his duplex style residence. Marshall appeared to have suffered at least one gunshot wound. 

Police have confirmed that Marshall’s girlfriend was at the home at the time of the incident. Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident. 

Detectives from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation with continuing assistance from state police investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division from Berlin and Princess Anne Barracks. The Somerset County State’s Attorney was notified and responded to the scene.

Maryland State Police investigators and crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division remain on the scene, gathering and processing evidence. The victim’s body will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. 

A reward of up to $2,000 is being offered to anyone with information relevant to this crime. Calls are being taken by Crime Solvers of the Lower Eastern Shore at 410-548-1776. All callers will remain anonymous. 

Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses. No one else was injured in the apparent shooting. The investigation continues..

Accomack County Sheriff's Toy Drive Underway

Sheriff Todd E. Godwin has announced the Annual Toy Drive of the Accomack County Sheriffs Office. 

Godwin stated that the annual drive is underway and we need your help to put a smile on the faces of some less fortunate youngsters in Accomack County. The struggling economy is making it difficult for families to purchase toys for their children and this is where you can make a huge difference.

New, unwrapped toys will be accepted at the Accomack County Sheriffs Office in Accomac through December 17.
