Maryland State Police - ADDITIONAL CHARGES OBTAINED FOR SUSPECT

Maryland State Police Press Release
03/27/2014

ADDITIONAL CHARGES OBTAINED FOR SUSPECT IN SALISBURY ASSAULT ON POLICE

(SALISBURY, MD) – As the search continues for the fugitive, police have obtained an additional warrant charging the suspect in connection with the assault on police in Wicomico County last night that occurred while he was fleeing an attempted arrest.

The suspect is identified as Edwin Fletcher, 31, whose last known address was in Salisbury, Md. Early today, police obtained an arrest warrant for Fletcher, charging him with multiple counts of first degree murder, second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault and related charges. This warrant is in addition to the felony drug warrant police were attempting to serve on him last night when the assaults occurred.

Further investigation has determined there were two Maryland state troopers and a Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office deputy in the car that was rammed and run over by Fletcher, who was driving a rented Dodge Ram pickup truck. All three police officers were injured. They were treated for their injuries at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and released early today. They are on leave while recovering from their injuries.

The investigation indicates three police officers fired their pistols at the suspect after the lives of the officers in the car were threatened by the actions of Fletcher. They include a state trooper assigned to the State Police Gang Enforcement Unit, a deputy assigned to the Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force, and a Salisbury Police Department officer assigned to the Gang Enforcement Unit. There is no indication Fletcher or the unidentified person with him was struck by police gunfire.

The injured officers and the officers who fired their weapons will be not identified. Each of the officers works undercover. Releasing their identities will jeopardize their personal safety.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigation into the police involved shooting is continuing. Upon completion, it will be submitted to the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

Delegate McDermott Stands Up Against Bathroom Bill

'Delegate McDermott Stands Up Against Bathroom Bill'

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today the House of Delegates will be debating SB-212 on final reading. The bill would make transgender identified people a special protected class of citizens to allow them full access to any and all public accommodations.  There is great concern that this will create a host of problems for Maryland businesses. There is no real exceptions, and those that exist require similar accommodations be provided if these folks are not allowed in certain areas of an establishment (spas, locker rooms, etc.).

“We have issues in Maryland that need to be addressed,” said Delegate Mike McDermott, “and insuring that a teacher can be ‘Sam’ on Monday and ‘Sally’ on Friday is what the democrats choose to make the object of their attentions in the State House. The bill is misguided at best, and destructive at its core.”

The Republicans are making an effort to make bathrooms excepted from this bill as well as other private accommodations where people are disrobed or partially disrobed without the need to create another space for transgenders, but no floor amendments were allowed yesterday when the bill was on Second Reader. It is doubtful that the democrats will allow any changes to the bill today.

The potential outfall and burdens that will be placed upon our businesses and families cannot be fully appreciated. The failure of the House democrats to allow for us to function as a deliberative body so that this legislation can be properly scrutinized is a great injustice to our citizens.

“The fact that we are even debating this issue on the floor of the General Assembly is disturbing; but the probable passage of this legislation should make every Marylander shake the democrats from their seats” said Delegate McDermott.

The vote will occur around noon today.

  • December 21–31
For your customized Moon times, see our Moon Phase Calendar.

The Sun, Moon, tides, and weather all influence fish activity. For example, fish tend to feed more at sunrise and sunset. During a full moon, tides are higher than average and fish tend to feed more.

However, most of us go fishing when we can get the time off, not because it is the best time!

Best Times for Fishing
  • One hour before and one hour after high tides, and one hour before and one hour after low tides. Inland, the times for high tides correspond with the times when the Moon is due south. Low tides are halfway between high tides.

  • During the "morning rise" (after sunup for a spell) and the "evening rise" (just before sundown and the hour or so after).

  • When the barometer is steady or on the rise. (But even during stormy periods, the fish aren't going to give up feeding. The smart fisherman will find just the right bait.)

  • When there is a hatch of flies—caddis flies or mayflies, commonly. (The fisherman will have to match his fly with the hatching flies or go fishless.)

  • When the breeze is from a westerly quarter rather than from the north or east.

  • When the water is still or rippled, rather than during a wind.

Maryland State Police - SEARCH CONTINUES

Edwin L. Fletcher
Maryland State Police Press Release
03/27/2014

SEARCH CONTINUES FOR SALISBURY SUSPECT IN ASSAULT ON POLICE

(SALISBURY, MD) – A combined police search effort is continuing in Wicomico County and throughout the Lower Shore area for a felony drug fugitive who used his pickup truck last night to assault police who were trying to arrest him.

The fugitive is identified as Edwin L. Fletcher, 31, whose last known address was in the 27000-block of Riverside Drive Extended, Salisbury, Md. He is described as an African American male, 6”2”, 160 lbs. Fletcher was already wanted on a warrant for a felony drug charge. Additional charges are pending in connection with his assault on police that occurred last night.

State, county and city police continued the search for Fletcher throughout the night. The search is being coordinated by the Maryland State Apprehension Team, a combined unit of police investigators skilled in locating fugitives. While the search is continuing in the Wicomico County area, police have notified law enforcement throughout the region to be on the lookout for Fletcher.

The Maryland state trooper and Wicomico County sheriff’s deputy injured during the attempted arrest of Fletcher last night were both treated and released from the hospital overnight. They will be on leave while recovering from their injuries.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. yesterday, a combined state, county and city team of police officers was searching for Fletcher in an attempt to serve the arrest warrant for the felony drug charge. Fletcher was observed in a parking lot off of Market Street in Salisbury in a rented Dodge Ram pickup.

When police converged on Fletcher’s vehicle, identifying themselves and ordering him to surrender, he rammed a state trooper’s vehicle head on and then drove up onto the car. In fear for the life of the trooper, police on the arrest team fired at the suspect, but there is still no indication the suspect was struck. The suspect fled the area in his truck, but the vehicle was found abandoned a short time later.

The investigation, led by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, is continuing. Assistance is being provided by the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, the Salisbury Police Department, the Maryland State Apprehension Team, and Maryland State Police from the Salisbury Barrack, Criminal Enforcement Division, and the Forensic Sciences Division.

NASA TV to Air Arrival of New Space Station Crew Thursday

NASA Television will broadcast the arrival of three crew members to the International Space Station beginning at 7 p.m. EDT Thursday, March 27. Their Soyuz spacecraft will dock with the station at 7:58 p.m. Coverage will resume at 10:15 p.m. for hatch opening at 10:40 p.m.

Expedition 39 Flight Engineer Steven Swanson of NASA and Soyuz Commander Alexander Skvortsov and Flight Engineer Oleg Artemyev of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 5:17 p.m. Tuesday (3:17 a.m. Wednesday in Baikonur).

Their Soyuz TMA-12M spacecraft did not complete a same-day rendezvous, as originally planned. Engineers are reviewing data to determine why the third in a series of rendezvous maneuvers that were to be conducted Tuesday did not occur as scheduled, thereby delaying the space station rendezvous two days. In conversations between flight controllers in Moscow and Houston, initial information indicates the spacecraft was not at the proper attitude, or orientation, for the automated thruster burn that puts the spacecraft in perfect position to dock with the space station.

Russian flight controllers confirmed Wednesday that the Soyuz performed two rendezvous maneuvers required to put the spacecraft on the proper course for docking Thursday, and all systems on the Soyuz spacecraft appear to be functioning normally.

Once the hatches are open, the three newest crew members will be greeted by Expedition 39 Commander Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and Flight Engineers Rick Mastracchio of NASA and Mikhail Tyurin of Roscosmos.

Swanson, Skvortsov and Artemyev will remain aboard the space station until mid-September. Wakata, Mastracchio and Tyurin have been aboard the orbital outpost since November 2013 and will return to Earth May 14, at which time Swanson will take command of Expedition 40.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR SUSPECT IN ASSAULT ON POLICE IN SALISBURY

(SALISBURY, MD) – State, county and city police are searching tonight for a wanted suspect who fled from police trying to arrest him and injured two police officers during his getaway.

Police are searching for Edwin Fletcher, 31. He is described as an African American male, 6’2” tall, 160 lbs. A search is underway in the Salisbury area. Police are using K-9 dogs and a State Police helicopter, in addition to police on foot and in cars.

Details are still preliminary. At this time, known information is that shortly after 8:00 p.m. today, a task force team of Maryland State Police, Salisbury Police and Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office personnel were working an undercover investigation attempting to locate Fletcher, who is wanted on a warrant for drug felony charges.

Police observed the suspect pulling into a parking lot off Market Street in Salisbury. The suspect was driving a Dodge Ram pickup and had another person in the truck with him. Police pulled in to surround the truck and attempt an arrest of the suspect. They activated emergency police lights and some officers got out of their cars identifying themselves verbally and with badges, while wearing jackets that said POLICE.

Instead of surrendering, the suspect driver, believed to be Fletcher, immediately accelerated the truck rammed head on into a trooper’s car. He then accelerated again and drove up onto and over the troopers car while the trooper was inside, injuring the trooper. In fear for the trooper’s life, police officers on the scene fired at the suspect driver as he was driving over the trooper’s car.

After driving over the police car, the suspect left the parking lot and fled the area. A short time later, police found the pickup truck abandoned on Camden Avenue.

A sheriff’s deputy was also injured in the incident, but how his injuries were sustained is not clear at this time. Both the trooper and deputy were transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center where they are being treated.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is on the scene and conducting an investigation into the police involved shooting. There is no indication at this time the suspect was struck by police gunfire. No police officers were injured by gunshots.

The investigation is continuing. Additional information will be provided tomorrow after it becomes available through further investigation.

Hogan condemns O'Malley/Brown Adminstration .....

Hogan condemns O'Malley/Brown Administration broken pension promise, urges restoration of full funding

Annapolis, MD - March 25 - Gubernatorial candidate Larry Hogan today called upon House and Senate leaders to reject the O'Malley/Brown Administration's plan to withhold $100 million in promised payments into state worker pension funds.

Hogan said:  "The O’Malley/Brown Administration's scheme to loot $100,000,000 in promised payments into state employees' pension funds is shameful.  There are a lot of good hardworking people in state government and they should not have to pay the price for the O'Malley/Brown Administration's reckless spending and mismanagement.  State leaders need to keep their promise to these workers," Hogan concluded.

David Craig and Jeannie Haddaway on State Budget

As the O’Malley – Brown budget is being considered in the House of the General Assembly, Harford County Executive David Craig and Jeannie Haddaway released the following joint statement:

“Maryland’s budget has increased from $29 billion in actual spending in 2007 to $40 billion proposed for fiscal year 2015, a spending increase of 36% over seven years.

“We must re-think the proper role of government in Maryland. Are we really better off with 80 tax, fee and toll increases than we were just seven years ago? Are the schools better, are the roads better, and are we better able to obtain health care or keep neighborhoods safer in 2014 compared to 2007? How is it possible that there is still a deficit in the budget after repeated promises that taxes would be the solution? It can only be attributed to mismanagement and lack of leadership.

“The results of no leadership are in. Rather than grow government, we will increase people’s take home pay and spur job creation by eventually eliminating the state’s income tax. In order to do that, we need a sound plan to stop ever-increasing spending.

"We commend the House Republican caucus for offering an alternative budget that reduces O’Malley’s spending by 3% yet still allows for a 1% increase over last year’s budget. It is a reasonable and responsible approach – especially given the recent revenue write downs.

"Year after year the Republican Caucus has offered viable alternatives - if these alternatives had been adopted we would not have found ourselves in this fiscal mess, and with a tax code that punishes everyone far more than the vast majority of other states in the nation."

TV’s Judge Joe Brown Gets Jailed

TV’s Judge Joe Brown Jailed By Real Judge

(CNN) — TV’s Judge Joe Brown was jailed on a contempt of court charge issued by a Tennessee juvenile judge Monday, according to a court spokesman.

Brown, 66, was sentenced to five days in jail after he became “pretty raucous” and “challenged the authority” of Magistrate Harold Horne, another judge told CNN.

Brown, a former Shelby County criminal judge, was in court to represent a client in a child-support case. He apparently became upset when he was told the case was not on the afternoon docket, Chief Magistrate Dan Michael said.

Horne, who “is a real laid-back guy,” gave Brown several chances to calm down before finding him in contempt, Michael said.

Horne held Brown was in contempt five times “before they were able to get him out of the courtroom, Michael said.

The court staff and judges “were all kind of floored” by Brown’s behavior, Michael said.

Brown was booked into the Shelby County jail in Memphis Monday afternoon, sheriff’s spokesman Chip Washington said.

Brown presided over a syndicated reality TV show based on court case arbitration for 15 years until it was canceled last year.

Prison Sentence For Jewelry Theft

Prison sentence for stealing jewelry valued at $500,000

(March 21, 2014) A local woman whose jewelry and gold coins valued at approximately $500,000 were stolen from her home in May told a judge  that although the monetary value was important, what they meant to her was priceless.

“It’s what each piece represents,” the victim told Judge William Simpson in Circuit Court in Snow Hill on March 6.

One was a brooch she designed for three gemstones her mothers gave her after she gave birth to a child in 1963. Another was a three and one-quarter carat diamond ring appraised in 1978 for $15,925. Today, she said, it would be worth $91,000. Another stolen item was the gold pocket watch of her father-in-law who died in 1956.

Another stolen item was a diamond and platinum bracelet given to her mother. In 1978, it was appraised at $10,000. Today, she said, it would be worth $57,500.

In her family, she said, special occasions were marked by gifts of jewelry. There were many such occasions because 131 items, mostly jewelry, were stolen. That number could grow.

“It’s an ongoing list,” she said.

Also ongoing is her task to find current values of items she discovers to be missing. She checks eBay prices and takes into account the inflation index since the items were originally appraised.

So far, she has identified 83 stolen items as having a value of $508,000.

“It’s a slow time-consuming process,” she said of remembering and calculating the worth of each item.

“They were collected over generations by many family members,” she said. “Many were one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable.”

She also said she had held those jewelry items and gold coins in trust for future generations.

“I am overwhelmed with guilt that they were lost in my keeping,” she said.

The thief, Maurice Anthony Holden, 32, of Melfa, Va., had little to say in Circuit Court in Snow Hill last Thursday.

“I’m sorry for her loss,” said Holden, who entered an Alford plea to the charge of first-degree burglary. In an Alford plea, the defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that the prosecution has sufficient evidence for a guilty verdict. In exchange for that plea, the State’s Attorney’s Office did not prosecute a charge of theft over $100,000.

Holden and another man broke into the woman’s house off Route 611 on May 6 while she and her husband were away for a few hours. They traveled in a van with telephone directories as a ruse so they could pretend they were delivering them to get access to properties.

Inside the victim’s house, they removed an entire safe, which contained valuable jewelry and gold coins. The safe was later found in a wooded area.

Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Rakow said “only a handful” of items were recovered. Many had been melted down.

Some of the jewelry was pawned in this area, but telephone records revealed Holden and his partner in crime traveled to New Jersey to pawn other pieces of the jewelry.  18-carat gold St. Christopher’s medal was sold to a pawn shop in Virginia for $100.

Judge William Simpson sentenced Holden to 15 years in prison, with all but five years suspended, for stealing the woman’s valuable jewelry and other items. Judge William Simpson also said Holden is liable for $200,000 in restitution. After his release from prison, Holden will be on supervised probation for four years.

The trial of Holden’s alleged conspirator in the burglary, Kente Wilcox, 30, of Westover, is scheduled for May 1. Wilcox is also scheduled for trial that day in a burglary that occurred not far from this victim’s residence in which the occupant shot him.

Ocean Pines Fire Department Donates Ambulance to Worcester County Sheriff's Dept.

Worcester County Sheriff's Office photo
March 20, 2014 -  Sheriff Mason proudly accepted the keys to a 2000 Ambulance from the Ocean Pines Fire Department that was recently placed out of service.

In the photo, Sheriff Mason is presented the keys by Fire Department Chief Angelo and President Healy. The Sheriff would like to thank the members of the Ocean Pines Fire Department, their Board of Directors and the community of Ocean Pines.

The Sheriff's Office will be transitioning the ambulance into a Mobile Incident Command Vehicle. The vehicle will be used at accident scenes, search and rescues, large events in the county and will be used where scene lighting is needed for long durations allowing fire equipment to return to their stations.

We are very fortunate to work in a county where fire, ems, law enforcement and local governments work so well together and look out for each other and their communities. We will post pictures as the transition of the ambulance commences.

We hope to have it ready for summer time deployment beginning in May.

Again, our thanks to the members of the Ocean Pines Fire Department and community.

DEFENSE READY IN WORCESTER

Organization Complete; Blackout Listed

Snow Hill, Md., Dec. 20 -With defense in Worcester County completely organized, S. Earl Tromley, Snow Hill, executive director of the County Council of Civilian Defense, announced last night that plans were almost ready for a complete air raid blackout throughout Worcester County within the next few nights.

The total blackout will press into action the four Home Defense Corps now functioning in Ocean City, Berlin, Snow Hill and Pocomoke City, all to act simultaneously at a "zero hour."

Worcester County's first air raid was held by the Home Defense Corps in Pocomoke City on Wednesday night of this week and the half-hour test proved successful.

"Things that actually occur on the stage are often more ludicrous and startling than the invented incidents of the press agents," said James Young, who is appearing with Miss Viola Allen as Sebastian in "Twelfth Night" and as Florizel in "The Winter's Tale."

"I was playing a Shakespearean repertoire throughout the south and received an offer of a guarantee to put on "Hamlet" at the little town of Crisfield, on the eastern shore of Maryland. The theater in Crisfield was not a theater, but a long, narrow hall with a platform at one end for us and rows of benches for the audience. We could use no scenery, but there was certain business of the play that demanded some kind of preparation— namely, the burial of Ophelia.

There was no trap through which to lower her, and yet she must be got rid of someway. So permission was obtained from the manager to saw out a bit of the stage for the purpose of improvising a trap. After this was done we found that it was twelve feet to the ground underneath, but this difficulty was overcome by piling dry goods boxes under the stage to form a platform upon which the gravedigger was to stand. The box of dirt, the skulls and bones all being placed in position, the trap was replaced, and we were ready for the performance.

Night came, the play proceeded uneventfully. We arrived at the churchyard scene, the trap was taken up, thrown aside and the curtain rung up. The dialogue between the clowns being over, one went with a "stoup of wine," and the first gravedigger, merrily singing, "A pickax and a spade," leaped into the open grave, but instead of landing upon the boxes that had been placed there he disappeared. We heard a splash and a yell, for the fellow had jumped into the Chesapeake bay. He was down under the building in impenetrable darkness and splashing waters eight feet deep.

The hall was built on piles, and the back extended far out on the shore. During the night a high tide came in and washed the boxes away, together with our useful 'props,' the bones and Yorick's skull. The poor clown was finally rescued, but It was probably the first time on record that 'Hamlet' ever furnished the principal sensation of a modern tank drama."

 Nixon planning election campaign

By HELEN THOMAS

WASHINGTON (UPI) President Nixon has continued to assess his personal role in the coming election campaign in a series of behind-the-scenes strategy meetings with top aides.

The President returned Sunday afternoon from a relaxed weekend outing on Assateague Island, a 33-mile strand in the Atlantic on the eastern shore of Maryland and Virginia.

He had with him his closest friends, including former Attorney General John N. Mitchell, who remains as one of his chief political brain-trusters; Charles G. "Bebe" Rebozo and New York industrialist Robert H. Abplanalp.

Blades was a member of the Pocomoke City Council from 1955 to 1958. He was a past president of the Pocomoke City Lions Club, past president of the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company, and was a past exulted ruler of the Elks Lodge 1624 in Pocomoke.

A Live Town Founded By A Woman

Elizabeth S. Chadbourne, a Boston elocutionist who studied her profession in the days when Georgia Cayvan began to prepare for her career, is the leading spirit and founder of Parksley, in Virginia. When Miss Chadbourne first visited and recognized the possibilities of the fertile peninsula which had been practically closed to the world until about five years ago, a single farm house with a station composed the town. Game was left to the city sportsman, soft shell crabs fed the hogs, whose flesh was staple product and food for the peninsula. Now there is a flourishing town with broad streets, pretty houses, and great prospects owned by a stock company, of which Miss Chadbourne is Secretary, Treasurer and largest stockholder. She is also the inside worker who interests people to invest. She understands all kinds of leases, deeds, etc., and can make out an agreement on the spot which all the quibbles of the lawyers cannot circumvent.

Arsonist Tonya Bundick's Attorney Asks For 62 Arson Trials

I wonder how much this is going to cost the county???

Bundick Wants 62 Arson Trials

By Linda Cicoira
Arsonist Tonya Bundick has asked for separate trials for each of the 62 charges of deliberately setting fires made against her in
connection with a spree that ended nearly a year ago.

Defense lawyer Allan Zaleski’s motion for the request was filed this week in Accomack Circuit Court. He is seeking separate proceedings  “in order to preserve the right of the defendant
to due process of law as guaranteed under the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia,” he wrote.

Bundick was convicted earlier this year inVirginia Beach Circuit Court of deliberately causing one fire and conspiring to set it. Evidence had been presented to a jury at that proceeding when Bundick changed her plea to guilty.

Her motion to move the trials for the remaining 62 cases off the Shore has not yet been decided. Bundick also has not been sentencedfor the convictions.

She is being held in Eastern Shore Regional Jail.

A couple weeks ago I noted that David Craig was first on the radio with advertising buys in the Baltimore market. Apparently the ad buys have now gone pretty much statewide, but with a focus on rural areas like the Eastern Shore and western Maryland.

Yes, of course a rate reduction allows higher income earners to retain more dollars because they pay so much more in the first place. These are the very people who are fleeing Maryland, denying the state the ability to tax any of their income
