JULY, 1958

In the news..

-To celebrate its third anniversary on the air WDVM radio was bringing the nationally popular Buddy Murrow orchestra to the Pocomoke armory with proceeds to benefit local civic organizations.

-Concern was being voiced regarding a housing shortage in the area due in part to an increase in personnel at the Chincoteague Naval Air Station. (Ironically, the base unexpectedly closed the next year and the housing shortage vanished.)

-School integration was the topic of publisher Elmer M. Jackson Jr.'s column chiding Democrats who were speaking out against a judge's ruling that desegregation should take place gradually.

-The 33rd annual Chicoteague Firemen's Carnival was ready to open with three finalists vying for carnival queen.

-An open house was to be held at the new Pocomoke High School where classes were scheduled to begin in September.

-J.J. Newberry's was celebrating the third anniversary of their new store on the corner of Second and Market Streets.

-The State Roads Commission was offering $15,000 to acquire five Pocomoke properties on Snow Hill Road but the property owners were not expected to accept the offer.

-The large four-faced clock in front of Citizens National Bank was damaged when struck by a truck but the clock continued to function okay.
