Effort to save a piece of Ocean City history

OCEAN CITY – A local nonprofit is seeking grant funding to begin a restoration of Ocean City’s historic Henry Hotel.

“Formerly known as ‘Henry’s Colored Hotel,’ the three-story, wood-shingled structured, was erected in the last decade of the 19th century and remains one of the oldest hotels in the city,” the letter of support from the Worcester County Commissioners reads. “More importantly, the Henry Hotel is the last remaining hotel that served black visitors to the ocean resort during the early to mid-20th century. Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong were guests of the Henry Hotel in the days when black entertainers could perform in major hotel ballrooms, yet could not sleep in the hotels.”

The loss of Pocomoke City's Bishop Isaac Jenkins, Sr.

Statement from Pocomoke City Mayor Todd Nock:

"It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of my former pastor, Bishop Isaac Jenkins, Sr. Today we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable individual who dedicated his life to serving our community and guiding us on our spiritual journeys.

For 26 years I had the privilege of sitting under Bishop Jenkins leadership, witnessing first-hand his unwavering commitment to faith, compassion, and justice. His sermons inspired us, his guidance provided consolation, and his presence brought hope to countless lives.

If you take a moment to look around Pocomoke, you will see constant reminders of Bishop Jenkins' legacy. The train station named in his honor, back in the 90's, stands as a testament to his dedication and service. In 2019, we further honored him by renaming Short Street to Bishop Isaac Jenkins Street, ensuring that his name will forever be woven into the fabric of our city.

Bishop Jenkins was not only a spiritual leader but also a pillar of our community. He tirelessly worked to bridge divides, promote unity, and uplift the most vulnerable among us. His legacy will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of those he touched.

During this time of mourning, let us come together as a community to honor Bishop Jenkins' memory. Let us remember his teachings of love, forgiveness, and empathy, and strive to carry them forward in our lives. Together, we can continue his mission of making our city a better place for all.
