Pocomoke Police: Dock Jam message.

 

  The Pocomoke City Police Department would like to officially welcome all guests and attendees to the Dock Jams event on 10/7/2023. We hope that you enjoy yourself and the beautiful downtown area of Pocomoke City.

   We ask for all guest and attendees to be mindful and considerate when parking your vehicle in our downtown area. We ask that you do not block private driveways, fire hydrants, handicap parking, etc... and obey all parking laws. We further ask that you do not park in a matter that obstructs the follow of traffic on any of our streets. Should you not adhere to the laws and this request, enforcement actions may be necessary.

   Private property owners if you are not permitting public parking on your property, we recommend you post your property. Again, we thank you for your cooperation and hope that you have a great and safe time.

Delmarva Chicken Festival

 

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7

1 - 7PM

PERDUE STATION, SALISBURY

Admission is free.  Festival features include food vendors, open air marketplace, kids activities, Miss Delmarva Chicken Festival Pageant, "Walk Through History" tent, and performances by The Jones Boys Band, Jimmy Charles, and Mike Hines & The Look. 

When the festival first made its' appearance in Pocomoke City in the early 1950's it was a multi-day event highlighted by a festival parade with homemade floats, chicken cooked in the world's largest frying pan, and the National Chicken Cooking Contest at the armory which drew national press attention.

Million-dollar lottery ticket purchased in Snow Hill

 

Although there wasn't a winner in Monday's $1.04 billion Powerball drawing a player who purchased a ticket in Snow Hill matched five of the six winning numbers for a one-million-dollar payoff.  

The ticket was purchased at Duck In II, 5610 East Market St.  A million dollar ticket was also purchased in Rosedale, Md.         

New facility in Pocomoke will aid victims of child abuse

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. -- The Cricket Center, an organization that helps reduce trauma caused by child abuse, will be opening up a satellite location in Pocomoke. It was made possible after county commissioners unanimously voted to reallocate $190,000.

The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce collaborated with Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (CNWR) again this year to host the 2024 Annual Pass Photo Contest. Forty-seven entries from amateur photographers were submitted for consideration. Leaders from various organizations in the community assisted chamber staff in choosing the final winner.

Temporary moratorium on marijuana businesses in Pocomoke

POCOMOKE CITY, Md.-City leaders in Pocomoke City are implementing restrictions on marijuana business there. The mayor tells WBOC that the City Council passed a resolution Monday night establishing a six-month moratorium for marijuana businesses. This includes all aspects of marijuana business, such as growing, processing, and on-site consumption.

The City says the ordinance will be so leaders can establish proper zoning laws and figure out where marijuana establishments will fit best.

This moratorium on marijuana business goes into effect immediately in Pocomoke.

Rev. Biking was an active supporter of prohibition and some news reports alluded to this in regard to the parsonage fire.  The reverend was a respected member of the Pocomoke community and in other charges he served during his later career, however note the news items below from the same era in which he received the commendation written about in the article:

LONG AGO BUT NOT FAR AWAY- THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF OUR SOUTHERN PENINSULA 

From a 1951 feature article in the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot.  The author, Leonora W. Wood, (1892-1989) wrote articles of regional historic interest for Virginia newspapers and authored "Guide To Virginia's Eastern Shore" in 1952.  She was an inspiration for the novel "Christy" written by her daughter Catherine Marshall, a well-known author.  Mrs. Wood's husband was a minister who had served Holmes Presbyterian Church in Cheriton.
