TIME MACHINE Preview ... Old Time Religion---NOT!

It's 1895 and what might be referred to today as a religious cult leader has been recruiting followers.. described by others as "a gang of free lovers" on Chincoteague Island.

Do you have a local memory to share with PPE readers.. such as a big snow storm, a favorite school teacher, a local happening, something of interest your parents or grandparents told you about? It can be just a line or two or more if you wish. Your name won't be used unless you ask that it be. Send to tkforppe@yahoo.com and watch for it on a future TIME MACHINE posting!

I don't know about free love on Chincoteague in 1895 but along about 1980 there were rumors of a nudist beach on Assateague, about 2 miles north of Tom's Cove. In the interest of public knowledge (yeah, right!) your friend Slim made the arduous trek up the beach and verified, with his own eyes, that there were, indeed, nubile young women running around the sands without benefit of bikini.

This situation did not sit well with local residents who demanded that the Park Service do something about it. About the only excuse the park people could find was that the lack of public toilets in that area led to people pooping behind the sand dunes and that could not be allowed, so the nudists were chased away. No mention was made that the ponies on the island contributed much more poop than the nudists ever could.

    Your friend,Slim

HeHeHe-I had heard the same rumors, Slim. So they weren't rumors after all! We were teenagers at the time and had always wanted to go and have a peek but never did.
