Press Release From Delegate Michael A. McDermott

“Delegate Michael A. McDermott receives a 100% Committee Score on the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition (MCRC) scorecard.”

(Annapolis) On August 14th, 2012, the MCRC) Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition’s new 2012 legislative scorecard was released.  Delegate Michael A. McDermott (R - Worcester and Wicomico Counties) was recognized as receiving a 100% for his Committee Score.  According to the MCRC, Delegate McDermott’s 100% indicates his strong support in preserving Marylanders’ consumer rights.  This past session, those issues included foreclosures, energy contracts, controlled hydraulic fracturing, tobacco addiction and identity theft.  Delegate McDermott made a strong stand for consumer rights while in the Judiciary Committee.

During the 2012 regular session and the May special session, the MCRC scorecard graded each legislator on eight critical consumer rights votes:

  1. Maryland’s new pre-filing mediation law (HB 1374)
  2. The state’s foreclosed property registry law (HB 1373)
  3. Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief law (HB 600 / SB 580)
  4. A new law expanding the state’s authority to oversee mortgage lenders (SB 302)
  5. Legislation that allows parents and guardians to put a security freeze on the credit reports of minors and vulnerable adults.  This protects identity theft. (HB 555 / SB 295).
  6. Lend Local Act of 2012 (HB 571 / SB 792)
  7. Financial Education and Capability Commission (created by HB 515)
  8. State and Local Revenue and Financing Act of 2012 (SB1302)

Additionally, the MCRC gave committee scores to each legislator based on their votes for a broader set of consumer issues and concerns.
