Ocean City; Jumper survives bridge suicide attempt

A 48-year-old homeless woman jumped off the Route 50 bridge late Wednesday in a failed suicide attempt, according to the Maryland State Police.

Police said the woman leapt from eastbound side of the Harry W. Kelly Bridge at around at 9 p.m. with the intent was to take her own life.

A Coast Guard vessel found her along the shoal about a half mile north of Hoopers Crab House. Conscious and alert, she was still able to swim toward Coast Guard personnel despite having sustained minor injuries, police said.

The Coast Guard brought the woman to their South Philadelphia Avenue station. From there, she was taken by resort EMS personnel to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury for a medical and psychological evaluation.

The 15 foot-tall bridge connecting West Ocean City from downtown Ocean City straddles the waters of the Sinepuxent and Isle Of Wight bays, where the waters range in depth from 3-7 feet.

State troopers, the Natural Resources Police, Ocean City police officers and firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and state highway workers all took part in Tuesday night’s search.
