Well golly gee whiz, the Discovery Center, MarVa Theatre and whatever-the-name-if-it-is restaurant were sold to us as the cornerstones of revitalization and economic redevelopment of downtown Pocomoke. The first two suck money in a never ending stream, most of it grants and loans from taxpayers. As for the whatever-the-name-of-it-is restaurant, I don't know if it has returned any money to the town but it sure has sucked profits away from legitimate restaurant operators in the area who pay the taxes that help support it. All this works great for now but what happens when we run out of other people's money?
While I love both the MarVa and the Discovery Center I can see Slim's point. As far as the DDC, has any thought and discussion gone into possibly raising the rates? I ask because I had some relatives from the western shore vacationing in Ocean City last month. On a rainy day they went with their daughter to the DDC. She loved it and so did they since she had so much fun. They told me "it was so cheap to get in." For this particular couple to think that, then it must be quite inexpensive because they watch every penny.
Just for clarification, Slim loves and supports the MarVa, patronizes the whatever-the-name-of-it-is restaurant, made a substantial donation toward the revitalization of Sturgis One Room School, and tolerates the DDC but enough is enough. Downtown has become a warren of thrift shops, second had stores and small struggling businesses. I really feel for Mark and Judy who have really struggled to keep Scher's going but the future just doesn't seem that bright anymore.
We have fancy (and expensive) crosswalks with the latest computer-controlled lights for pedestrians but in an average day we have less than 30 pedestrians at each crosswalk. We have two parks within two blocks and maybe a third if you count the garden at Clarke and Willow and maybe a fourth is you count Cypress Park. Hell, even the Police Department has moved out of downtown.
The Discovery Center needs money, MarVa Theatre needs $110,000. Well, dammit, I need money, too!
ReplyDeleteAnd just where is this "exclusive, private residence"? I guess this means us peons need not apply.

Slim
