PRESS RELEASE ~ By Delegate Mike McDermott

A Tool of Destruction
by Delegate Mike McDermott

A new tool developed by the University of Maryland will determine acceptable levels of phosphorus in our farm fields. If those levels are breached, no organic chicken manure may be applied. For our farmers and the Eastern Shore economy, this “tool” has much more in common with a dagger than an instrument of science.

In this case, science is being cast aside in favor of a political tool that garners support/donations from national environmental groups at the expense of Maryland families. The fact is, we do not know the phosphorus impact, if any, on the Bay. Further, we cannot determine the percentage that Maryland farms contribute. While Delaware continues to study the issue to get a better picture of cause and effect, O’Malley and the democrats move forward half cocked, more desirous of being “first” rather than “correct”. This political correctness will prove devastating to the Eastern Shore and, ultimately, Annapolis revenues.

80% of lower shore farmland could be deemed unfit to receive poultry litter. Farms in this category will need to purchase chemical fertilizers at significant expense in order to grow. A farmer who may spend $500 for poultry litter will need to replace it with $20,000 worth of chemical fertilizer.

Poultry farmers without land accessibility or lacking neighbors to utilize their organic manure will be faced with a trucking/shipping bill in a market with fewer integrators willing to accept ones poultry litter. This translates to higher costs and storage issues all adding to the bottom line of a business’s viability.

Maryland, under democratic rule, is no stranger to losing businesses due to over regulation; and, while a business can adapt or move out of state, the farmer’s asset and heritage is the dirt beneath his feet. He is forced to comply or abandon his dream by a governor with a national agenda using ambiguous science to destroy Maryland’s number one industry.

Dr. McGrath (the U of MD scientist behind the shortened study) told me the depletion of phosphorus in soil could take 50-years, yet O’Malley refuses an additional 36-months to better understand the cause and effects.

Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance says, “We won’t know the cost until we implement the plan.”  Does that sound eerily familiar?

Perhaps it’s time to provide blindfolds to the farmer and the fisherman standing guard over the Great Seal of the State of Maryland and ask, “Got any last requests?”

Hogan on Eastern Shore - Responds to New Phosphorus Regulations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 24, 2013

Contact:
Steve Crim

The O’Malley-Brown administration has submitted, for legislative approval, regulations that will have a sweeping effect on how Maryland’s already struggling farmers can manage their land.  The proposed Phosphorus Management Tool is an intrusive regulation that will significantly impact how and when farmers can apply poultry manure fertilizer to their fields.  Farmers have used poultry manure as fertilizer for years.

“It appears the O’Malley-Brown administration is not content with just restricting farmers’ property rights, but also insists on mandating how they use their property,” stated Larry Hogan, successful businessman and Change Maryland Founder.

Secretary of Agriculture Buddy Hance told a meeting of farmers last week that his department has no idea what the economic impact of the new regulations would be for farmers until it is up and running.  “It’s Obamacare for farmers,” Hogan said, “we have to pass it in order to see what’s in it.”

According to a University of Maryland survey conducted by the designers of the Phosphorus Management Tool, 61 percent of the farms surveyed would be impacted by the new regulation. Virgil Shockley, a Democratic member of the Worcester County Board of Commissioners and a farmer himself, estimated the new regulations would cost the Lower Shore $120 million.

The Phosphorus Management Tool is part of the O’Malley-Brown Watershed Implementation Plan, which also foisted the onerous ‘rain tax’ on Maryland home and business owners.

“We all want a clean and healthy Chesapeake Bay, not only for us but for our children and grandchildren,” said Hogan.  “However, instead of focusing on workable solutions for all Marylanders, Governor O’Malley has chosen to pad his presidential resume by pandering to environmental special interest groups, and has placed burdensome regulations on our hard working farmers."

Today and tomorrow, Hogan will be touring the Eastern Shore speaking to local farmers and local community leaders. The Eastern Shore is where the majority of Maryland’s farmland is located and where the proposed regulations will have the most devastating financial impact.

Two Teens Indicted On Arson Charges In Somerset County

Branddon Willey
WMDT
SOMERSET CO., Md. - Two people have been indicted on arson charges, in connection with a March fire.

Deputy State Fire Marshals say they arrested 18-year-old Ryan Fries, and 18-year-old Branddon Willey, after they were indicted by a Somerset County Grand Jury on arson, and other related charges. According to the report, the charges stem from a March 25th, 2013 fire on Flower Hill Road, in Eden, where the front porch of a vacant two story, home was intentionally set on fire. Damages were estimated at $2,000. No one was injured.

Fries and Willey were charged with 1st degree arson, 1st, 3rd, and 4th degree burglary, 1st degree malicious burning, and malicious destruction of property. They are being held at the Somerset County Detention Center.
Ryan Fries

Officials say Fries and Willey are also waiting on court proceedings about two other fires of vacant homes, involving a third suspect, 23-year-old Stephen Schuckert. The two other reported arsons in Princess Anne, one on October 2nd on Fitzgerald Road, caused $10,000 in damages, and a second on October 3rd on Drawbridge Road, caused $60,000 in damages.

Tonya Bundick Arson Trial To Still Be Held November 6, 2013

In Accomack County Circuit Court Tuesday Judge Glen Tyler presiding with Judge Revell Lewis III sitting on the side, heard a motion from defense attorney Shannon Dunham on behalf of the defendant Tonya Bundick. The motion to continue or postpone the current trial date of November 6, 2013. Ms. Dunham outlined the issues as Ms. Bundick was indicted on August 7, 2013, with a venue move on October 1, 2013, a discovery motion on October 16, and with the trial date only a few days away she needed time to prepare.

Judge Tyler checking court records acknowledged that some of the paperwork for discovery was dated October 21. Continuing Judge Tyler said that there had been approximately 7 months since Ms. Bundick was taken in custody and the letter setting the trial date was dated September 9. Judge Tyler explained the law saying there had to be either a valid reason or a practical one to grant a continuance and with neither in this case the motion for continuance was being denied.

Ms. Dunham explained again that she had three other cases to prepare for when Judge Tyler told her he had assigned two attorneys to this case for that very reason. Ms. Dunham admitted there was a discussion about Garrett Dunham being the second attorney but no order was issued officially making him the second attorney. Judge Tyler asked the court clerk what the record showed and she reported no order was issued. Judge Tyler told Ms. Dunham to be ready on November 6 and adjourned the court for the day.

Arrest Made In Queen Anne's Co. Jewelry Store Robbery

(QUEENSTOWN, MD) -- Maryland State Police and the FBI have arrested and charged a Prince George’s County man in connection with a Queen Anne’s County jewelry store robbery last spring during which hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry was stolen.

The accused is identified as Roy L. Tolbert, 42, of Suitland, Md. After consultation with the Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, he has been charged with state charges that include armed robbery, robbery, theft over $100,000, first degree assault, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. After an initial appearance before a court commissioner, Tolbert was held in the Prince George’s County Detention Center without bail. Federal charges may also be pending against Tolbert.

The arrest and charges are the result of an investigation that began about 8:00 p.m. on May 19, 2013, when a suspect entered the Ultra Diamonds jewelry store, in the 100-block of Outlet Center Drive, Queenstown, Md. The suspect displayed a handgun and stole dozens of pieces of jewelry from the store. The suspect was described as wearing a disguise that included a wig, fake beard, sunglasses and a ball cap. He was seen fleeing the area on a sport motorcycle, which was later found and determined to be stolen from Washington, D.C. The stolen jewelry was valued at more than $300,000. No one was injured during the robbery.

The investigation by the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division investigators began immediately. They were joined in the investigation by special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Evidence developed during the investigation led to the identification of Tolbert as a suspect. Investigators obtained search warrants that were served on October 18, 2013, in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties by State Police investigators and special agents from the FBI. No weapons or jewelry were recovered during the service of the search warrants.

One of the search warrants was served at Tolbert’s home. He was not home at the time. Troopers from the Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team eventually made contact with Tolbert and convinced him to turn himself in. Tolbert surrendered to State Police at the Forestville Barrack at about 3:00 p.m. on October 18th.

In addition to the FBI, Maryland State Police investigators received significant assistance from law enforcement agencies that included , the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Postal Inspector's Service, U.S. Attorney General's Office, Prince George's County Police Department, Anne Arundel County Police Department, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center, the Eastern Shore Information Center, Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team, Maryland State Police K-9, and the Maryland State Police Field Operations Bureau.

The investigation is continuing.

15-Acre Solar Power Farm For Pocomoke City

POCOMOKE CITY, Md.- The Pocomoke City mayor and council have approved a project that will harness the sun's energy for one of the largest solar power farms on the Lower Shore.

The 2.4 megawatt project will sit on 15 acres of the city's property near the Pocomoke Beltway and Dun Swamp Road, just down the street from Sharon Rantz's business office.

"I think that people are being ripped off with the amount of money we have to pay for services, such as electricity," said Rantz.

Her sister-in-law Carol Rantz, of Pocomoke City, felt the same way.

"It seems that every year the prices go up for that [electricity]," said Rantz.

The new solar farm will produce enough electricity to power close to 900 homes, according to city officials.

"In this day and economy, we need to save every penny that we can," said Carol. "So I'm all for the new solar farm."

The city is expecting a savings of $50,000 each year, according to city manager Russell Blake.
"The mayor and council are excited to announce that we are going solar and using it for 85% of our city's electricity," said Blake.

Homeowners will also save, but not on their monthly utility bills.

It's not the residents of the city who will see a difference," said Blake. "Except for their tax bills possibly."

Stop Buying Girl Scout Cookies ?

Right-wing pastor wants you to stop buying lesbian Girl Scout cookies

By Clare Kim
Pastor and right-wing activist Kevin Swanson urged his radio show listeners to refrain from purchasing Girl Scout cookies because the organization promotes “lesbianism.”

“Please, I beg of you, stop buying Girl Scout cookies,” Swanson said during his Monday radio broadcast.

“I’d say you ought to say no to the Girl Scout cookies,” Swanson told listeners. “I don’t want to support lesbianism, I don’t want to support Planned Parenthood and I don’t want to support abortion, and if that be the case I’m not buying Girl Scout cookies.”

Swanson also called the Girl Scouts of the USA  ”a wicked organization,” that doesn’t promote “godly womanhood.”

“The vision of the girl scouts of America is antithetical to a biblical vision for womanhood,” he said. “It’s antithetical to it.”

The Girl Scouts’ website states that the organization “does not have a relationship or partnership with Planned Parenthood,” and that it will remain a “secular organization” that will not take a position on human sexuality, birth control, abortion.

Swanson later added in his radio broadcast that the Girl Scouts organization is creating a generation of independent women who support a “communist in the White House” and promote the “gay and lesbian agenda.”

His Generations Radio co-host, Pastor Dave Buehner, also said Monday that “where you spend your money does count” with Christianity and God’s teachings.

Swanson said that if listeners continue to buy Girl Scout cookies, they should “take a big, fat, black magic marker” and “start marking out all of the references to the Girl Scouts of America on all the boxes.”

Mr. Agar went on to say she needs to be punished for what she did. A Letter From One Of Our Readers.... To A Thief....

From one of our readers to the thief who had the desire to steal items that belonged to a 6 year old child from a vehicle.

To the worthless pile of protein who took it upon themselves to enter my Daughter's vehicle last night and remove my Granddaughter's Nintendo DS, assorted games as well as her change purse, I hope you are happy with the immense trauma you have caused this child.

Tomorrow I will take her shopping and replace those items, The ones that meant the world to her, I suspect you may have gotten $40 for your troubles and I hope you feel good about yourself.

She has not stopped crying since 7am when it was discovered, She is now afraid that more of her things might be taken, This bothers me deeply, Not the theft, But the heartbreak, trauma, and seeds of distrust you have caused her. I hope you feel good about that.

At first I thought you may have been raised by a Brothel worker due to your lack of a moral compass but then I thought back to when I was stationed in Nevada and every one of those workers I met had standards and morals far above what you possess and then I realized that had you been raised by a "lowly Brother worker" you would not be slithering about in the night stealing as you do but would actually contribute to the community in which you live & breathe.

At this point you have 2 choices, you can MAN UP and turn your self in or you can continue to be a COWARD hiding in the night until you are finally caught, When that time comes I will be there with her in court for all to see what you are, and to hear from her what you have caused.

Remember, You reap what you sew.

Aiming for a stronger state: Delegate Haddaway talks policy
Salisbury Daily Times 10.18.13

"I will be taking a strong role in terms of policy and the legislative agenda, which is different from previous lieutenant governors. Given my business background, I’m really going to help on the economic policy side. Given my ties to human trafficking and domestic violence policies, I would see me working on a lot of the family law and women’s and children’s issues, as well."

Maryland law on sex offenders and child custody must be revisited Washington Post 9.29.13

"Child advocates pushed this year’s General Assembly to toughen the law. A bill sponsored by Del. Jeannie Haddaway (R-Talbot) would have prohibited custody or visitation to child sexual offenders, except under certain circumstances where there was clear and convincing evidence that there was no danger to the child; supervised visits would have been allowed. It died in the House Judiciary Committee, a graveyard for similarly worthy bills that aim to better protect children and victims of domestic abuse."

O'Malley Raised Unemployment Insurance Tax to Highest in the Nation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 21, 2013

Contact:
Steve Crim

Last week Governor O'Malley boasted about the lower unemployment taxes Maryland businesses will see next year. He claimed the lower rates are a sign of the "progress" of Maryland's economic recovery under the O'Malley-Brown administration.

"What recovery is he talking about?" said business leader and Change Maryland Chairman Larry Hogan. "There are 6,500 fewer small businesses, unemployment has doubled, and 120,000 additional people are unemployed since O'Malley took office. This is just another chapter in Martin O'Malley's book of fairy tales," Hogan said.

Due to the recession, unemployment claims all but depleted Maryland's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, going from a high of $680 million in 2009 to a low of $50 million in 2010. Governor O'Malley cajoled and bullied business groups, who initially opposed his plan to replenish the unemployment trust fund.

However, O'Malley's plan included taking $127 million in federal funds with all sorts of policy strings attached, which saddled Maryland businesses with even more tax and regulatory burdens

Under O'Malley's plan state businesses saw their unemployment insurance taxes triple to the highest in the nation.

The state also borrowed $250 million from the federal government to meet unemployment insurance benefit claims.

In the year after O'Malley's "fix," a legislative audit found that his Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation paid $150 million in unemployment insurance claims to people were working, dead, or in prison.

"Martin O'Malley will never tell you the whole story," Hogan said. "The fact is, that it was the O'Malley-Brown administration that foisted these high tax rates on Maryland businesses in the first place. Over-charging and gouging businesses for years during the recession caused us to now have a surplus, it had nothing to do with any imaginary recovery,” Hogan continued. “O'Malley cares more about the unemployment insurance fund than he did about addressing unemployment."

Change Maryland has documented the O'Malley-Brown administration's 40 tax and fee increases, which had removed $9.5 billion annually from Maryland's economy. They include raising the corporate income tax from 7 percent to 8.25 percent and multiple personal income tax rate hikes, which affects many of Maryland's small businesses.

According to the non-partisan Tax Foundation, Maryland pass through entities—businesses that pay the personal income tax rate—face the seventh highest marginal tax rates in the nation. The Tax Foundation cited Maryland's high unemployment tax rate as one reason they ranked the state 41st its Business Tax Climate Index.

Change Maryland is the state's largest and fastest growing grass roots movement and has swelled to over 60,000 members. Change Maryland is the leading voice of independent, non-partisan opposition to the O'Malley-Brown power structure, focusing on economic and fiscal reform.

In 2013, Change Maryland brought together federal, state, and local government officials, think tanks, economists and over 400 business leaders from across the state for a summit on improving Maryland's economic competitiveness, in order to identify comprehensive solutions to the state's serious economic problems. The group also produced numerous economic studies which have shown the impact of the 40 consecutive O'Malley-Brown tax increases on Maryland's economy: a mass exodus of businesses, jobs and taxpayers fleeing the state at an alarming rate and taking billions out of our economy.

Larry Hogan has been active in the Maryland business community for over 25 years. He is the founder and President of the Hogan Companies, leaders in economic development, who have brought hundreds of companies and thousands of jobs to Maryland. He took a hiatus from the private sector to serve as a Cabinet Secretary in the Ehrlich Administration. He has led citizen referendums to limit taxes and to reform government and spent decades working to change Maryland for the better.

Radio Transmitter Hurled Into Space

(Excerpts)

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. (AP)- A five-stage rocket hurled a tiny radio transmitter 1,050 statute miles into a cold, cloudless sky today. The nose cone dropped into the Atlantic about 28-minutes later some 800 miles off shore.

The instruments it carried aloft sent back new information on the electronic density of space more than 800 miles up.

The vapor trail and smoke left as the rocket roared upward could be seen along most of this Delaware-Maryland-Virginia peninsula. There was virtually no wind and the long column hung motionless for several minutes.

The shoot was conducted by the Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory based at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md., in cooperation with the National Aeronautics And Space Administration.

The Army said all phases of the shoot - dubbed "Strongarm" - performed just as expected.

The Army plans to use the information for military purposes. It now will know more accurately what type of space intercontinental ballistic missiles and anti-ICBMs will be operating in.

January 1915

What may have started as a routine overnight boarding for passengers on the Chesapeake Bay steamer "Maryland" from departure points along the Pocomoke River and other lower Eastern Shore locations ended in a harrowing experience. After crossing the bay en route to Baltimore the steamer caught fire. Most of the passengers were in their berths at the time. Some of the frightened passengers donned life belts and jumped into the icy bay waters attempting to swim ashore. Two night liners from Norfolk to Baltimore arrived promptly to offer assistance and other smaller boats soon were on the scene. The steamer carried 76 passengers and a crew of 32. All were safely accounted for with apparently no serious injuries. The steamer was beached at the mouth of the Magothy River and burned to the water's edge. In addition to $10,000 loss in cargo the value of passengers' personal possessions was expected to reach a high mark. The steamer's value was placed at $120,000.

Roger Evans Speeds To Second U.S. 13 Victory

DELMAR- Roger Evans of Pocomoke City, Md., drove his '67 Camero "Blue Dolphin" to another Super Pro Eliminator tile Easter Sunday at the U.S. 13 Dragway.

It was the second win in three outings for the Brown's Outboard Motor Service sponsored car.

The final Super Pro run of the day matched Evans and last week's winner, Vernon Russell of Dover, Del., against each other.

Russell was left at the starting line as the "Blue Dolphin" streaked to a final run of 10:32 seconds, 131.58 miles per hour.

Evans' consistency behind the wheel has resulted in total winnings of $400 so far.

The Super Pro class is limited to the eight fastest cars in competition on any given Sunday, as determined by their best qualifying times.

Edward Smith of Pocomoke City, Md., snapped the win streak of two in a row that Robin Lewers of Temperanceville, Va., had going by taking the Heavy Eliminator title.
