SNOW HILL — The Lower Shore Performing Arts Company is preparing its next live theater performance, the 1971 musical “Godspell,” with shows in Chincoteague, Pocomoke City, Crisfield, Ocean City and Princess Anne.
Conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, it is based on the Gospel of Matthew with pop-style songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz with the song "Day by Day" becoming a Billboard-charted hit which added to the show’s success.
Directed by Robert Forester and assistant director Jan Bellistri, Mr. Forester is part of the cast as are Christine Swift, Nick Donchak, Allie Donovan, Katheryn Redden, Shahan, Dean Defino and Dane Russell as Jesus, saying he fell in love with the show listening to the album of music as teen.
For the Rev. Dean Defino, pastor of Antioch Church, he canceled a trip to Ireland to be part of the cast, playing both John the Baptist and Judas. He said, "I love the story and the unique way it tells the parables from the gospel of Matthew. The passion of Christ is very moving.”
Show dates are May 9-10 at the Chincoteague Island Theater; May 16-17 at St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Pocomoke City; May 22 at Gallery 413 in Crisfield; May 29-30 Art League of Ocean City; and June 6 at The Shore Hub in Princess Anne.
