Made In The U. S. of A. Over a 1/2 Million Miles And Still Going Strong

American made!! 557,000 miles and still going strong.

It's a Mercury Comet with a 260 V8 that Rachel Leech calls her "Chariot" She purchased it brand new for just over $3000.00 in 1964.

She was looking ahead enough to purchase lifetime parts, the "Chariot" has had 7 lifetime mufflers and 17 lifetime batteries.

Rachel knows her "Chariot" will reach speeds of 120 mph because she has had it on the Daytona Speedway but says that's all the speedometer goes up too.

A word of caution though; Don't mess with Rachel or her "Chariot" because she is packing heat.

Childcare, Chinese style: Rickshaw driver chains two-year-old son to a post while he's at work

At first sight it seems the ultimate in child cruelty - a two-year-old boy chained to a lamp post to stop him getting away.

Yet his parents say this is the only way they can guarantee not to lose him.

His father Chen Chuanliu works as an unlicensed rickshaw cyclist in Beijing, taking fares all over the city, while the boy's disabled mother collects rubbish at the roadside.

They say they secured their son, Lao Lu, with a padlock around his ankle because his four-year-old sister Ling was 'stolen' from them last month.

Child snatching is rife in China, where strict laws govern the size of families.

Concerned passers-by spotted the shackled toddler outside Huaguan Shopping Mall in Liangxiang.

They reported his father to the authorities, who yesterday ordered him to remove the chain although it was not clear what arrangements he would make in future.

There is no nursery place for Lao Lu because his 42-year-old father is a migrant worker from another province, Szechuan, and therefore does not qualify for state help. The family live in one room, 9ft by 8ft.

Chen said he could not afford to pay for childcare on his earnings of £4.50 a day and had refused offers of 'a lot of money' to give his son up for adoption.

'My wife cannot take care of him and I have to work to support my family. So I chain him to a pole when I have a fare.

'I don't even have a picture of my daughter to use for a missing-person poster. I cannot lose my son as well.'

So: Where Does The White Go When The Snow Melts?

Disappearing White of Snow

Question - Where does the white go when snow melts? ----------------- Snow is frozen water in many little crystals. It is frozen water just like ice cubes are frozen water, except snow is not in a block shape, but in many little crystals.

The reason snow looks white to you is because when the colors in the light touch it the snow does not absorb any of them, so to your eyes, because it did not absorb, it looks white.

When the snow melts it means the little tiny water crystals are melting, just like an ice cube melts when it gets warm. All the snow turns into water and makes the ground wet. Now the snow no longer exists, so the light does not have any more snow to touch anymore, therefore you do not see white any longer. Instead, you see the color of whatever object was under the snow (like the grass). Grace Fields

=================================================

Joe, Here is something to try: get a cube of ice and - very carefully - scrape off a few ice shavings. Do the shavings look white? Now take the shavings into your palm and squeeze hard so that the shavings merge together - if you do this right, the merged shavings will look clear again. What do you think is happening?

You might also consider why it is that a drop of water on the kitchen counter top will look transparent, but when a paper towel is placed on it, the paper towel gets dark. Why should a clear liquid make a dark spot on a paper towel? This has everything to do with the way light interacts with matter, and how the size of the object controls how much light is absorbed or reflected. Greg (Roberto Gregorius) ================================================

When snow melts, the white goes the same place that the light goes when you turn off a light bulb. It goes away. Michael Loop ====================================================
Snow is white because the flakes are the right size to scatter visible light that reflects off them. In contrast an ice cube (especially when wet) is still the same "stuff" -- water but it is transparent to visible light.

The "white" of the snow goes away because the flakes melt and stick together in large clumps that can no longer scatter the light. By the way light scattering is what happens when light that reflects off of a surface, reflects back in all directions about the same amount. This is different than a mirror where the light reflecting off the mirror reflects back at the same angle at which it strikes the mirror. Vince Calder ================================================

White is the color made by lots of little surfaces, like the glitter of broken glass. When a glass chunk is whole, it is clear like water, like melted snow. Then when you grind it into sand, it's white.

This time you have made white! And when snow melts, yes, whiteness is destroyed . White is just the color of scrambled light, bounced around until it is dizzy, by lots of little partial mirrors.

It is 100% reflection, but scrambled so you do not get the picture images you can see in a nice large mirror. By partial mirror, I mean the way you can see yourself in a window sometimes.

Windows are about 92% clear + 4% mirror on the front + 4% mirror on the back. Having two different mirrors makes the reflection a bit blurry sometimes. If you ground this window up to a powder, it would be a pile of white powder. There is almost no such thing as a clear powder. (PS-do not try that. Glass dust is very dangerous.)

Things That Just Don't Seem To Be Fair With Snow

Winter snow storms are not always fun.........or fair........... no matter where you live!
This family is lucky (I hope) that this tree did not fall onto their home. Just one of the bad things about living in the country (or anywhere I guess) with trees all around.

And sometimes it's difficult being a pet goose in the country and being lost from home. We think this guy was taking a gentle swim in the ditch and suddenly realised that he had floated from his own yard. I hope he found his way home in all that blowing snow.

Just as bad as being without electric and not being able to "flush" is being a dog and not being able to "sniff" and find where you need to go. Thank goodness for the puppy the owner carried a shovel to dig the way.

And for many of you that can read this today (whether you like the post or not) thank your electric company! For alot of you this storm has been a nightmare.

Care to share your experiences? Leave a comment........

Hope you are warm and well fed. Please check on your neighbors and pets. Don't forget to feed the birds nice things.

Taxpayers to Fork Out $2.5 Million for Single Census Ad During Super Bowl

Taxpayers might want to pay close attention to this Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast or they'll miss Uncle Sam's 30-second, $2.5-million reminder to stand up and be counted.

Taxpayers might want to pay close attention to this Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast or they'll miss Uncle Sam's 30-second, $2.5-million reminder to stand up and be counted.

That's what the Census Bureau paid CBS to get their message notched somewhere between a National Lampoon reprisal, a weird dude with big glasses, a beer-can house and men without pants.

And, that's just a fraction of what the bureau plans to spend this year to get Americans to answer a simple, 10-question survey.

The bureau is spending $133 million between January and May -- or, more than $13 million for each of 10 questions, one of which reads: What is your telephone number? -- to publicize the national head-count. Part of that effort is the Super Bowl ad, which Kendall Johnson, a spokeswoman for the bureau, confirmed Wednesday to FoxNews.com cost $2.5 million to air. The ad, produced by actor and director Christopher Guest, also will appear in other media, Johnson said.

"We have rotations across all kinds of cable properties on network and cable TV," she said, adding that the bureau plans to advertise in 28 languages, including some as obscure as Hmong, a southeast Asian dialect.

SLIDESHOW: $132M Census Ad Campaign in 28 Languages

"What an absolute colossal waste of money," said David Williams, vice president for policy at Citizens Against Government Waste, a government watchdog group based in Washington.

"That's a lot of money to spend on a glorified public service announcement," Williams said. "While they're counting people, we're going to be counting the dollars that they're spending."

Shannon Jacobs, a spokeswoman for CBS, which airs the Super Bowl, told FoxNews.com Wednesday that advertisements for this year's game have topped $3 million.

CBS sold some ads "north of $3 million," she said, adding that there's a range in price depending on the advertisement's placement during the game.

The census, conducted every 10 years, is an official count of the nation's population mandated by the Constitution. The results are used to determine distribution of taxpayer money and the apportionment of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Every U.S. household, including those occupied by non-citizens and illegal immigrants, must be counted.

The census questionnaire -- touted by the bureau as one of the shortest forms in history -- consists of 10 questions and is intended to take no longer than 10 minutes to complete, according to the bureau's Web site.

Snow, Snow, and More Snow

During a phone conversation early this morning from my daughter in Baltimore it occured to me that our children may have never seen snow of any great depth. There are 24 inches of snow so far in Baltimore and that is the most my daughter has ever seen. A lover of snow, she was laughing at the fact she had to dig a path to walk the dog. UGH!

Alot of us that have children that have never witnessed the "great snow storm" probably have some fond memories inches upon inches of snow. I am sure someone out there has a memory or two left of life when snow storms were snow storms. Years ago there was no doppler radar, no weather man on every channel and certainly no up to the minute updates.

I can remember a time where there was no "modernization" with winter. Most folks years ago used the almanac or weather (slight at that) once, maybe twice a day. And if the winter storm came, it did just that! It came. And being children of that generation, we waited.

We waited at the window watching the snow fall and waited for the clearance from good old mom telling us we could go out and play. Twenty-four inches of snow years ago was no big deal. We needed the snow drifts because it made it that much more "explorable".

Since this is a snow day for most big people too I hope you will share some of your fondest memories of snow when you were a child. One of the things about snow that tickles me (and sledding) are the plastic sleds. Do you remember when they were all wood? And if your sled broke or you didn't have one you'd beg your mom for a cookie sheet?

What do you remember? Or if you want to just comment on this storm. Let us know what you have been doing.

American VS Foreign Vehicles

It's been a lot of discussion lately about the throttle pedal sticking and ABS brakes on Toyota's, This has sparked the American public's curiosity about the quality of vehicles, American and Foreign.

The MSM and the blogging community has took this and ran with it.

It's a no brainer, all manufactures have glitches from time to time but American vehicles are much superior to their foreign competition and I will elaborate.

First this is nothing new, automotive vehicles have had recalls since their introduction, from very minor unnoticed repairs to items that cause fires, brakes, throttle pedals, exploding gas tanks, etc. the list is endless.

In the late 70's thru the early 80's American vehicles got a bad rap as admittedly the quality of the autos produced by the big three did lack from previous years. This was due to the gas crunch of the Carter administration, (remember odd and even days for gas? I do)
They quickly regrouped and got back on track to a quality vehicle.

The U.S. government installed very strict regulations on emissions standards on all U.S. made vehicles. This forced the big three to use Chevrolet engines in Pontiac's, Oldsmobile's, Buick's, and even some Cadillac vehicles. The engines were factory de-tuned along with the added smog BS. This in itself caused some reliability problems in some of the larger vehicles and complaints from the die-hard "brand" worshiper. IE: Cadillac owners were NOT happy when they found out they had a Chevy engine. What they didn't know was they had a better engine than Cadillac ever built.

Introduce the rice-burners to the American public in the late 70's, these vehicles did not have to meet such rigorous emissions standards (except Ca) as they were at that time imported, the rice-burners nearly doubled the U.S. vehicles in fuel mileage at that time because the engine was not fitted with all the power robbing emissions garbage and it was 1/2 the cubic inches. The general public latched on to fuel pinching foreign vehicles because at the time fuel at the pump had tripled or quadrupled in price in a very short time and fuel was being rationed at the pump, RE; the odd-even days.

The new car buyer was looking to save all they could in the way of fuel prices. When window shopping for a new vehicle the foreign vehicles nearly doubled the mileage of a similar big three (or so the EPA sticker said) so the choice was simple to the penny pincher.

What was soon to come to the owner of the foreign POS they had no idea. When their prized fuel sipping rice-burner became a little aged and needed a repair it would cost 5 times the price to repair than the U.S. vehicle. They needed a $400.00 timing belt every 50,000 miles as routine maintenance when people had never heard of a timing belt, most went neglected and the devastation done to the tiny interference engine when the belt snapped was extremely expensive to repair. Most people didn't even think about it, but ALL the money they had saved in fuel plus much more just went out the window for the high-price repair of their beloved foreign fuel sipper. How long does one have to drive to save even 100 bucks in fuel? (think about it)

The above paragraph still reigns true today, it cost much more to drive a foreign vehicle than a big three produced vehicle. The savings in fuel will be overridden with the simplest of repairs and normal maintenance not to mention the high priced O-rings they call tires.

Then we have the people that talk about how many miles a rice-burner will run above a U.S. built vehicle.... Bull shit.. I have been a mechanic all my life, working for a pay check repairing vehicles at the age 12 for Ruth Donaway when she was in the building that's now occupied by Billy Ward and have done my whole life since.

Any U.S. manufactured vehicle will out perform, out last, and cost much, much less to repair and maintain. For example, an alternator for a 2000 Mercedes cost $171.00 from Advance Auto (rebuilt junk part) and a alternator for a 2000 Impala (comparable U.S. car) cost $45.00 and the labor to install the alternator on the Mercedes will be at least treble the cost and probably more, so how much fuel does one need to save to offset this. Get the picture?

It is also a myth that foreign vehicles will run more miles than the U.S. iron. Way back in the 70's it was not uncommon to see a cheap Plymouth Valiant with an inline 6 cyl engine to have 300,000 miles and going strong. I have an American made vehicle right now that is approaching 400,000 miles and runs as good as new.

As the refining of oils improved, the introduction of synthetic lubricants, and the technology in machining,... today's engines will easily double the running mileage of yesteryear's and very easily surpass that of ANY rice-burner.

The interior components of foreign vehicles are also much less of the quality of any U.S. vehicle, the rice-burners interior simply fall apart, recycled plastic that has already aged cracks and deteriorates in a few short years leaving the rice-burner just a mess inside. Look around at the classic car cruise-ins and shows, how many classic Mercedes, Toyota's, Datsun's, Honda's do you see? NONE. Why? Because they just cannot stand the test of time like American muscle.

I often wonder if the people that brag on their rice-burner realize that their vehicle was assembled here in the good'ol U.S.of A. (parts made in Mexico) and it's not the nuts and bolts that fall out, in the long run the car just falls apart and cost 10 times the amount to repair.

You can keep your fuel sippin', gas pedal stickin' brakes not workin' plastic coated, recycled beer can rice-burner.

I'll keep my American Iron. And don't complain when your throttle sticks or your brakes don't work and you hit me and total your your rice-rocket and I just wave and drive away without a scratch.

Snow-cream

Oh yea!! I get to make some more snow cream, and snow shake mmmmm, mmmmm, good.

1 gallon of fresh snow

1 egg

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup condensed milk (cream)

4 tsp real vanilla (or to taste I like it heavy)

1/2 tsp brown sugar

1 pinch table salt

beat the egg vanilla and cream well, add the sugars and salt and mix.
add the snow 2 cups at a time and mix well, add more snow for desired consistency or if it's to thick add equal parts of cream and sugar to desired consistency and taste.

For the snow shake, just put the prepared snow cream in a blender and blend on high until it will move through a straw.

Enjoy

The Snow is Here AGAIN!! Need Help??

As with the snow storm last week I will be out and about assisting stuck - stranded motorist and local civil servants.

If you have to go out please be very careful and drive with caution, leave a lot of extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, if you have a 4x4 don't think just because it's a 4x4 you can drive it like you stole it in this weather.

The best practice in heavy snow while driving is to drive like you have an egg between your foot and the accelerator/brake peddles and you don't want to crack the egg.

I will be out looking for people/civil servants that are stuck, stranded or in ditches to give them assistance in this very cold weather.

If you are in the local area and need a push/pull or even a ride to work give me a call @ (410) 726-6925 I cannot promise that I will be right around the corner but I'll be there if you need me. For rides to work (Nurses/Doctors/Civil Servants will take priority).

IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY CALL; 911

Prepare Your Vehicle For the Snow

A few little tips so you don't forget.

We are not used to such accumulation of the white stuff here on the Shore so here's a couple things to remember.

If you have a vehicle that the wiper blades will fold up and stand on their own (most do) fold them up while your vehicle is parked, that way you can scrape the windshield without the wipers stuck to the windshield in the morning and it's easier to clear the snow/ice.

NEVER turn your vehicle off before you turn off the wipers because when you go to restart your vehicle the wipers will try to run and may be stuck, even if you turn them off and they are not in the park position the wiper motor will still run and try to park the wipers and damage the wipers and/or the motor.

While the snow is still relatively wet and not much accumulation back your vehicle into your driveway as close to the surface street as possible. If you must park on the street remember the snow plows will plow a large bank of snow that may completely render your vehicle immovable.

If you must go out take some blankets, extra coat, gloves, shoes/boots and socks in case you get wet or happen to breakdown, when a vehicle is not running it's not heating and at some point any vehicle can and will breakdown.

Have a flashlight, water, and a cell phone, even if you do not have cell phone service calling 911 on a non-activated phone will still work.

And of course if you do not have to travel stay home where it's warm and safe.

Radar Detector Bill Advances in the General Assembly

Seems that Virginia's radar ban that was enacted in the 1970's may be on the way out

On Thursday a bill advanced, with an 11-8 vote in the General Assembly. Virginia is the last state that still bans the use of detectors in vehicles. Many opponets say that allowing radar detectors in vehicles will encourabe drivers to speed up.

Now I don't know how they can possibly go any faster on any road down here. But it sure will give drivers a heads up on getting busted for speeding! At the rate of speed some of these drivers are going I'm not quite sure they'll be able to slow down.

And don't think you're fooling anyone. If an officer sees a radar detector or any part of one in your car he will stop you. And it's quite possible he will ticket you.

Presidential Plane Flies Over Hampton Roads

Did you know that on Wednesday the presidential plane made an appearance over the Hampton Roads area?

Sometime during the afternoon on February 3 the plane made a touch and go landing at the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport. According to a spokesman this happens at least once a month. It's called "training".

Training? Hmmm...... Well, I'm going to show some stupidity here and tell you I don't know if I would be comfortable flying with a pilot that needed practice once a month with one of my many presidential planes. And I'm going to further my stupidity today and ask why?

Also, how much does this cost the American taxpayers?
Does this hamper Hampton Roads in any way for the few minutes the presidential plane makes contact with a runway and then flies off?
Do the major airline pilots get practice with the jets before they fly hundreds of people all around the world 24/7?

And here's something I didn't know: The presidential plane is only referred to Air Force One when the president is on board. So?
