Just a little more time and the Pocomoke City Police Department will be opening in the new location on Market Street.

This building is quite different from the current police station on Second Street. From the first step inside the front door (or the back door if that seems to be your preference) the new facility is astounding! I've watched this building go from a body shop to the professional establisment that it is. I know how excited everyone is ..... including myself.


Photo above was taken in what will be the conference room. At the present time it is serving for the delivery of office furnitue.

The Pocomoke City Council alloted a certain amount of funds to be used to purchase new furniture and supplies. The monies have been used very wisely and Angel Thornes, the Executive Administrative Assistant for the Pocomoke City Police Dept., has done a grand job in her selection of office supplies, desks and chairs for the various offices. Angel has also been one of the many that have poured their heart and soul into this move. She deserves so much credit and on the day Councilman Malloy and I stopped by she took the time to give us the tour just to show us how much progress has been made.

I'm not going to tell everything I learned from Angel - I'm going to let the police department brag on their new facility. The most amazing room in the new station? The radio room. The department has bigger screens that produce larger images making it easier to see what cameras in various parts of town send. Because of the location of the new police department radio transmissions will be clearer. One of the images will be of the bay area located in the back of the station. The dispatcher will be able to view the officer as he approaches. With the touch of a button - just like a garage door opener- the doors open in the back of the building, freeing the time an officer would have to spend fumbling for keys to unlock the doork, get back in his patrol car and pull into the garage..... a feature the police department has never had before.


My venture would never be complete without stopping by the current police department.
It's always a pleasure to see Chief Sewell and on this day met Officer Perkins. What a great person and true asset to the department.

I also need to say this. I've watched the new station become a reality. I've met some of the most wonderful people in the past few months. These are good, hard working men. I've seen them hanging from metal beams, walking on stilts, crawling on their knees.....never complaining. I've been locked in a cell, tip toed around newly glued tiles and watched wax dry.

In the past months I've seen the changes in the Pocomoke City Police Department. Recently I had the occasion to meet more of the police officers. This IS a new and improved department! And based on what has been happening in Pocomoke City lately you can believe they "work well with others" .

Other agencies from Virginia, Worcester County Sheriff's Dept., Maryland State Police, Worcester County State's Attorney Beau Oglesby- (I've forgotten many) ALL fit into the equation of fighting crime together. And it shows!

My best to all of you. Keep up the good work!
And thankyou, Chief Sewell and Angel for all of you kindness in the past months.

Blaine Hitchens Takes A Tumble With "Rare Species"

It always seems to happen at least a couple time during the mud bog season when the joy of a fast fun turn into a nightmare for everyone - especially for the drive.

Blaine Hitchens driving his truck "Rare Species" Blaine had just completed a 3.0 run through the mud when he excelerated causing his truck to swerve the hit the trees, wiped out the new digital timing board, turned over and finally came to a rest on its top.

In his introduction it was stated that the engine alone in this truck cost to the tune of at least $70,000.....maybe more. - That's not counting the body work.

Thankfully Blaine had no injuries- except pride and we all know how easily that gets damaged for some of these drivers. Goes with the sport.

Watch what happens when the truck finally comes to a stop. Be sure to play close attention to the first to arrive to Blaine's aid...... (no matter who the racer is he just arrives before anyone else)

STATE POLICE HELICOPTER LOCATES FOUR LOST KAYAKERS

(Worcester County, MD): A Maryland State Police helicopter located four lost kayakers as darkness quickly descended upon the Pocomoke River.

On June 5, 2012 at approximately 8:20 p.m. SYSCOM, the statewide helicopter dispatch center, received a request from the Worcester County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) for the use of a helicopter to assist in the search for four lost kayakers on the Pocomoke river. MSP Trooper 4, based at the Salisbury Wicomico Airport was dispatched to assist and while enroute coordinated with the WCSO to obtain updated information. A sheriff's deputy in the area was able to communicate with the lost kayakers via cell phone and narrow the search area.

The flight crew onboard Trooper 4 was able to quickly locate the victims as they had built a campfire for warmth in the heavily forested area. With the utilization of the 30 million candle power Nightsun, Trooper 4 provided lighting and directed a deputy to the lost victims. Trooper 4 remained overhead and provided directional guidance and situational awareness as the victims were transported to the main road where a medical unit was available for evaluation. The rescued victims, only identified as two males and two females, were released by the EMS crew.

Agencies assisting with the search were the Worcester County Sheriff's Office and the Newark Volunteer Fire Department.

May 30, 2012 Members of the Worcester County Criminal Enforcement Team executed a search and seizure warrant regarding to a marijuana distribution investigation that was being conducted in Pocomoke, Maryland. The target of this investigation was identified as Toan Chi Huynh 25 years of age, of Pocomoke, Maryland. A search and Seizure warrant was served at Mr. Huynh residence in Pocomoke Md. Entry into the home was made by the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Armed Response Team. Located inside of the residence was Mr. Huynh and he was taken into custody without incident. During the course of execution of the search and seizure warrant the following items were located and seized by investigators:

· 1,207 Grams of Marijuana

· 61 Grams of Powder MDMA

· 16 Tablets of Ecstasy / MDMA

· Various items of paraphernalia to include a commercial heat sealer and scale

· $1,075.00 in U.S. Currency

Mr. Huynh was transported to the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following offenses:

1. Possession of Marijuana

2. Possession with intent to distribute Marijuana

3. Possession with intent to distribute Marijuana (School Zone)

4. Possession of powder MDMA

5. Possession with intent to distribute powder MDMA

6. Possession with intent to distribute powder MDMA (School Zone)

7. Possession of Ecstasy / MDMA

8. Possession with intent to distribute Ecstasy / MDMA

9. Possession with intent to distribute Ecstasy / MDMA (School Zone)

10. Possession of Paraphernalia

Mr. Huynh was subsequently transported to the District Court Commissioner for initial appearance where he was committed to the Worcester County Jail on a $25,000.00 bond. The Worcester County Criminal Enforcement Team was assisted by the Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Office, Pocomoke Police Department, Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force, Eastern Shore Virginia Drug Task Force, and Drug Enforcement Administration during the execution of this search and seizure warrant.

The New Pocomoke Restaurant - almost

I've lost count on which week we are on but I do remember I began taking photos in December 2011. The thought of this restaurant becoming a reality never seemed to phase me until about 2 weeks ago. Now, with every visit I get a little more nervous and anxious and find myself wanting to turn my camera over to the Councilman so I can pick up a broom.... just trying to tidy up hoping it would speed the process.

Doesn't work that way. But I can tell all of you that every visit now brings on bigger and better changes......and it won't be long now before something is being cooked in the kitchen and customers are seated either inside or out.

The walk in freezer has been installed and the kitchen has had the insulation tucked away, vents and all those odd looking things that I've seen hanging from the ceiling have all been put into their proper places and ceiled away with ceiling tiles. The kitchen walls have been finished.


Ceiling fans add a wonderful touch to the restaurant. Honestly you just can't imagine the beauty of the restaurant itself added to the beauty of the fact that it sits at the side of the Pocomoke River. Carpeting at one end of the restaurant and woodgrained flooring at the other. Some more hard workers and those who get the headaches from it all.......It has taken so many hands to bring this restaurant from an idea to a reality for Pocomoke City. Regardless of what the task was in the construction of the reastaurant each person played an important part in its beauty.
Kevin Sewell is a city employee as well. I have never seen this young man when he didn't have a smile on his face. (I'm sure he'd rather be on the dock with a fishing rod in his hand).


Supervisor of City Department Bill East and Pocomoke City Manager Russ Blake checking on the progress of the restaurant while the two young men below take a break from landscaping. Photos will never be able to actually show just what a masterpiece all of this area has become.

We simply can't forget that while history was being made for the restaurant in downtown Pocomoke the Skipjack Ida May was also making history also and was docked just outside the restaurant for a few days. This really gave the feeling (to those that didn't know) the restaurant must be open for business.

Colas Released ~ All Charges Against Him Dropped

One of the more bizarre cases involving an off duty police officer ended quietly Monday when the Accomack County Commonwealth Attorneys office decided to withdraw all charges against Bradley Colas for now. The Commonwealth's Attorney's office can revisit the case if evidence comes to light that Colas was in fact responsible for his actions.

Colas, a Virginia Beach Police officer, attacked and stabbed two local firefighters who were trying to help him after the 1999 Honda he was driving ran off the road on Rt. 13 near Hallwood early on the morning of March 4. Colas then tried to get the firemen to take him to Philadelphia to "see Jesus".

Colas was arrested by the Virginia State Police charged with two counts of malicious intent toward police officers or rescue personnel and taken to the Accomack County Jail.

Colas attorney, Sonny Stallings claimed from the beginning that Colas was experiencing an unusual reaction to the drug Biaxin which was administered by a Virginia Beach physician approximately one week prior to the incident because Colas had bronchitis.

Drug tests were administered to Colas initially and showed that there was no trace of the Biaxin in his system at the time of the tests.

Stallings tried to get Colas out on bond on March 9 and again on March 29. At the second hearing both Accomack County Commonwealths Attorney Gary Agar and Judge Revell Lewis stated that they still were not sure whether Colas was experiencing a reaction to the drug or had become psychotic.


Both Lewis and Agar apparently are now satisfied that Colas did experience a reaction to Biaxin which caused the attacks.

While Stallings was happy with the outcome, he still expressed disappointment that the process took so long. Colas spent three months in jail.

Colas record with the Virginia Beach Police Department was exemplary and he had shown no signs of psychotic behavior prior to taking the Biaxin.

Investigation Continues Into Suspect's Death After Arrest

Pocomoke City police officers to remain on duty during probe

POCOMOKE CITY -- Unidentified officers from the Pocomoke City Police Department will remain on duty while the Maryland State Police investigates the circumstances surrounding the death of an individual officers were attempting to arrest.

Yakuana McDonald, 23, of Virginia Beach was pronounced dead at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on Friday after spending three days in the Intensive Care Unit.

McDonald was taken to PRMC on May 28, after reportedly being involved in a car accident, fleeing from police and falling unconscious after being handcuffed.

"Based on the accident itself, my heart goes out to the family, but I stand by my officers 100 percent," said PCPD Chief Kelvin Sewell. "I'm confident that after the investigation is completed, the officers will be okay."

Sewell did not wish to release the names of the officers and said that until the results of the MSP investigation are released, he has no plans to place them on administrative leave or take any actions against them.

"I'm confident with the way the scene was and the accident itself that, based on the MSP investigation, those officers aren't going to be at fault," Sewell said.

Officers from the Pocomoke City Police Department first came in contact with McDonald on May 28 after being called to a vehicle crash on Route 13 south of Brantley Road at about 5:30 p.m.

Maryland State Police investigators said after arriving at the scene, Pocomoke City police officers found McDonald, who they believe was driving, and his brother Thadius McDonald, standing next to the vehicle.

The car was reportedly on its roof on the southbound shoulder of Route 13.

"They were driving northbound in the southbound lane of Coastal Highway," Sewell said. "The car hit the brim and flipped over. I don't know how those two guys survived that crash."

The officers allegedly saw a controlled dangerous substance in the car and attempted to take the two into custody. Yakuana McDonald then led city police officers on a half-mile chase as he allegedly tried to evade arrest, according to a press release from the Maryland State Police.

After the Pocomoke City police officers caught Yakuana McDonald, he reportedly began kicking and fighting with the officers. After being handcuffed, the officers were trying to carry him back to a police vehicle when he fell unconscious, according to a news release from MSP.

A Maryland state trooper from the Berlin Barrack performed CPR on Yakuana McDonald before emergency medical personnel took over and transported him to PRMC.

He was pronounced dead on Friday after succumbing to his injuries. His body was taken to the Medial Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

The Maryland State Police have taken over the death investigation with the assistance of the Worcester County State's Attorney's Office and the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation. The Pocomoke City Police Department has been left in charge of the crash and controlled dangerous substance investigations.

Maryland State Police Spokesperson Elena Russo said the PCPD asked the MSP to take over the death investigation. She said homicide detectives are frequently asked to take over death investigations of police-involved shootings, deaths while in police custody and similar incidents.

Russo says the length of the investigation is determined by several factors and that it isn't expected to differ from other death investigations conducted by MSP homicide.

"In any investigation, the investigators are collecting all the evidence they can and talking to witnesses to put all the information together and make sense out of what happened," Russo said.

LA Police Officer Sets Ferris Wheel Ride Record

(AP) — After a record-breaking 25 hours on a Ferris Wheel, Los Angeles police Detective Gus Martinez likely knows better than anyone that what goes around comes around.

Martinez climbed aboard the 130-foot-tall wheel at Santa Monica Pier's Pacific Park at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Except for hourly five-minute breaks, he didn't stop riding it until 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Several hours into his run, he didn't even bother to take some of the allotted breaks.

"He finished quite solidly," said Guinness World Records adjudicator Philip Robertson, who traveled from London to the park to verify that an official Guinness record was being set. The previous mark, 24 hours and 30 minutes, was set by a woman in Dublin, Ireland, last year.

Witnesses said Martinez seemed to hit his stride after some worrisome queasiness during the first few hours, when the big wheel stopped and started repeatedly to let other riders on and off.

The 18-year police veteran, who is assigned to the LAPD's special crime task force, acknowledged he doesn't like heights and doesn't much care for Ferris Wheels either.

What's more, he did nothing special to prepare for his marathon effort.

"But after 18 years of long shifts, double shifts and a lot of extended hours, I think that kind of helped, actually," he said with a laugh.

He agreed to ride the wheel to help raise money for the Southern California Special Olympics. A son who has Down syndrome competes in Olympic events and accompanied him on part of his record-breaking ride.
To pass the time riding after the park closed, Martinez talked on his cell phone, checked his iPad and sometimes watched a big screen TV that had been installed for him.

And despite his fear of heights, he even checked out the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Los Angeles skyline from time to time.

"Even overnight it was just beautiful," he said. "Not quite a full moon but almost."

A Maryland fisherman tells an expensive story of his experience with a sturgeon he caught in the Pocomoke. He called upon a friend to assist him in getting the fish into the boat, but the friend, being afraid of it, left him to manage as best he could. Being afraid of losing his prize, he sprang upon the back of the fish, caught it be the gills to keep its head out of the water, and with kicks and yells road it ashore.

Here's a fish story from Worcester: At Purnell's Mill pond, about a mile above Snow Hill, herring were so plentiful forty years ago that William K. Ronley, while waiting for his grist at the old mill that then stood there, caught a horse-cart load with a little dip net, and then had to wait for his grist; and the mill was a fast grinder and the miller active.

Herring are swarming in Purnell's Creek, a branch of the Pocomoke river, just above Snow Hill. The like has not been seen for many years. Charles Timmons, 15 years-old, Monday morning caught 2,000, and many others were almost as successful. All that has to be done is get any kind of a net with a pole to it and scoop them up. Apparently there are millions of them.

A SEAL ASTRAY IN SOUTHERN WATERS

Levin Benson, of the Pitts Creek neighborhood, while out fishing on Monday succeeded in capturing what he considered a very singular kind of fish. As he floated down the river, holding his net and patiently waiting for the signal that told him a stray shad had wondered into its folds, he felt such a tug upon it as made him haul in his net, and his first view of its contents caused him to think, as he says, that he had caught the devil. But, as he had become entangled in his net and ruined a greater part of it he was determined to have revenge, and attacked him with a sturgeon-hook, and, after a hard fought contest, came off victorious. The animal proved to be a very beautiful seal. How it came in our river is a mystery. Its body gave evidence of being shot before its capture.

A whale recently stranded on the beach of Worcester County, measured 26 1/2 feet in length, 4 feet across the mouth, 18 feet girth.

*WAY BACK WHEN: Ocean City folks were younger, a mountain sized iceberg, towering hundreds of feet in the air, blew its chilly breath over the Maryland Seashore resort. Records show that on June 7, 1899 with the temperature above 90 degrees, a giant iceberg loomed into sight three miles offshore Ocean City in the Atlantic Ocean. The iceberg remained in sight for several hours as it slowly floated southward and its proximity to shore caused the temperature at Ocean City to drop below the 60 degree mark.

August, 1936

Announcement was made of a $21,082 federal Public Works Administration grant to Pocomoke City to go towards construction of a municipal building and for completion of a school construction program. $16,850 was allotted for the two-story municipal building with two one-story wings and a basement. The building was to be designed to take care of all of Pocomoke City's municipal functions. The basement was to have a boiler room with concrete slabs overhead which were to serve as the floor for jail cells. Announcement of the funding came from First District Congressman T. Alan Goldsborough.
