Time Machine: The 1879 Duer Trial.

The year was 1879 and a tragic incident that occurred the previous year involving two young Pocomoke City women was in  the news coast to coast. This real life soap opera-like drama  resulted in the death of one of the women and was being recounted in court proceedings in Snow Hill. The following 1879 newspaper articles published May 21 to July 7 were from The Times of Philadelphia.

(Published May 21, 1879)

Footnote: The articles don't mention the location of the Hearn home but an article on the case published fifty years later stated the home was on Willow Street and by that time had burned down.

NORTHAMPTON CONFEDERATE MONUMENT PUBLIC HEARING DRAWS RANGE OF OPINIONS

The public hearing on the future of the Confederate Monument on the Historic Courthouse Green in Eastville drew a wide array of opinions Tuesday evening.

Most of the speakers supported Dr. Art Carter’s idea of adding to the Historic Courthouse Green, rather than taking away or tearing down. Carter proposes adding a monument to a Union Solider who is carved in “an African-American likeness.”

All Eastern Shore MSP Medevac Services To Continue

 (Press Release)

10/7/20

CAROZZA GRATEFUL FOR DECISION TO KEEP MSP AVIATION UNITS OPEN, ON SHORE

“Budget cuts to the Eastern Shore’s MSP Medevac services truly would have had a life-threatening negative impact on my constituents.”

OCEAN CITY, MD—Senator Mary Beth Carozza today issued the following statement after it was announced that all Maryland State Police Aviation Command bases will remain open:

“I am grateful for the decision made by Governor Larry Hogan and Maryland State Police Superintendent Woodrow Jones to keep all MSP Aviation Command bases open. I also would like to thank all those emergency first responders on the front lines and all my constituents, many whose lives have been saved by MSP Aviation, for their strong advocacy for keeping Trooper 4 in Salisbury and Trooper 6 in Easton.”

Shore responders, labor representatives, and family members personally had contacted Senator Carozza and shared stories about the significance of MSP emergency rescues where the Trooper 4 and Trooper 6 airborne transportation literally saved the lives of countless victims. On a personal note, Senator Carozza’s aunt and uncle were involved in a very serious automobile accident on Route 50 in Dorchester County in 1998 where they both individually were transported by Medevac to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore. They both survived the horrific crash and fortunately are still alive today.

In her letter to Superintendent Jones in July when MSP aviation units on the Shore were threatened for closure, Senator Carozza stated, “The possible budget cuts to the Eastern Shore’s MSP Medevac services truly would have a life-threatening negative impact on my constituents and other Shore residents and visitors, especially in the remote rural areas on the Shore like Smith Island and in Ocean City which swells to the second-largest city in Maryland during the season.”
