From Pocomoke City Police Chief Kelvin D. Sewell

Recent Thefts From Vehicles in Pocomoke City

Due to a number of thefts from vehicles recently Pocomoke City Police Chief Kelvin Sewell would like to remind the citizens of Pocomoke to be sure your vehicle windows are up and locked when the vehicle is not in use. Remove all money- even small amounts of change- from areas such as cup holder or ashtray. LOCK purses, electronic devices and other valuables in the trunk.

If you should discover that your vehicle has been broken into or items have been taken call the police department before you make the attempt to get inside your car. Sometimes thieves leave a pattern or clues that can be easily noticed by an officer that could possibly lead an arrest of the person(s) responsible for these crimes.

Sunday At The Pocomoke City Police Dept. Back To School Event

Pocomoke City Police Department's annual back to school picnic. The flyer put out said "RAIN OR SHINE" and it did both but that didn't seem to stop many from dropping by the police department for some free school supplies...and enjoying some refreshments.

Donations fell short this year but the money from the Pocomoke City Mayor and Council was not wasted. Angel, secretary for the Chief of Pocomoke did the purchasing, separating and bagging of the school supplies with each bag clearly marked for the appropriate grade. Bags filled with colored pencils, note paper, composition books, binders, highlighters, glue and more-- it was all there waiting to be claimed and taken to the first day of school - tomorrow!

Stuffing bags and making sure the appropriate supplies are in the age group intended is not an easy task and I would imagine a tedious one- but fun.  Malik- Angel's son,  played a big part in helping.  Great job, Malik!
PFC Tucker with the Pocomoke City Police Department was at the event today and assisted in handing out the school supplies.
PFC Joy Blades also helped.  Sixty-eight bags containing school supplies were handed out to the community school children today.  The supplies remaining will be donated to the Pocomoke schools.  With PFC Blades in this photo is Dispatcher Shawna Gammino.

Councilman Rob Clarke dropped by the police station.  Standing next to him PFC Tucker. Seated -LtoR Malik- (he's going to be something great someday!)   And Dispatcher Shawna Gammino-

Thanks for all your help and the great conversation!

And thank you so very much, Angel, for taking these photos!  Another great job .......she's always thinking....

There's more........

National Night Out In Pocomoke City 2012

Pocomoke City's NATIONAL NIGHT OUT  2012
Hosted by the Pocomoke City Police Department

The kids loved this!  But then kids have the energy.  The older I become the more amazed I am with the things children can and will do.  Note:  to enter this house of a thousand bounces you have to crawl through a small door, or so it seemed.  Once inside you just bounce up and down, fall down, get up,  fall down again and continue that same routine for what seemed to me forever.  The amazing part, to me,  is when you have completed all the bouncing you crawl out the small door, get to your feet and continue onto something else.  Amazing!

Pocomoke City Manager Russ Blake and wife Lynn with Councilwoman Tracey Cottman
Officer Perkins with one of the city crew workers, I believe.

What an honor it was to have Sen. Jim Mathias (left to right), MD State Police Commander of the Berlin Barracks- Lt. Earl Starner and Worcester County State's Attorney Beau Oglesby  attending the National Night Out in Pocomoke.

Also attending: Investigator for the Wor. Co. State's Attorney  Office- Rick Taylor and Special Investigator fof the Wor. Co. State's Attorney Office.

Officer Perkins with Mike Dean
PFC 1st Class Ralph Corbin with Lt. Earl Starner and Tfc. Orndorff
from the MD. State Police Barracks in Berlin.  He is also a K-9 Handler.

These 3 were having a great time but didn't stick around longe enough to give me their names.

National Night Out events have proven to be effective all across America.

Each National Night Out is an inexpensive and enjoyable  evening to promote neighborhood spirit and  police/community partnerships.  The outcome is to create a safer and more productive neighborhood, not just in one community but all across the nation.

Pocomoke City Police Chief Kelvin Sewell has certainly kept his word when he wrote in   his Mission Statement "to provide the highest quality of police service" and to "develop a partnership with the community". What he has done in just a few short months with his department and for the great town of Pocomoke City is outstanding.

Be sure to thank them.

Pocomoke City Police Department Dedication

Pocomoke City Police Department Dedication

and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Friday ~ June 22, 2012

Congratulations to the Pocomoke City Police Department! Those congratulations include everyone and anyone linked to the department or had a role in bringing this beautiful facility to a reality for the people of Pocomoke City.

Pocomoke City Mayor Bruce Morrison was Master of Ceremonies and Councilman/Rev. George Tasker gave the invocation. But is was the remarks given by the guest speakers that touched our hearts when commenting on the men and women in uniform that protect and serve the citizens of Pocomoke. They are the best and they deserve the the best.

This isn't the first generation of police officers for Pocomoke City and Chief Sewell stated that. In fact he named many of them and went on to say how proud the newest generation of Pocomoke City Police Officers were to walk in the footsteps of those before them.

In the program handed out before the ceremony Chief Sewell stated: " All of us in the Pocomoke City Police Department are very excited about our new police building. This move has already resulted in greatly improved morale within the ranks of the officers and our civilian employees. We greatly appreciate the efforts of the Mayor and City Council, the City's Public Works Department, Beauchamp Construction, and everyone else who was in this project. We look forward to serving the community from this location for many years."

What wonderful words came from Delegate Mike McDermott as he spoke about the Pocomoke Police Department. To be honest I had to hold back my tears as he spoke. These brave men and women do leave their homes and the arms of their loved ones to become the protectors of society. They are the brave warriors who put their lives on the line for the people. They are the ones who patrol the dark streets on foot, bike or car. And we can not forget those back at the police department manning the radios and working in capacities that keep the Pocomoke Police Department running....nor should the loved ones waiting at home ever go unnoticed.

Worcester County Commissioner Merle Lockfaw
expressed the same sentiments as the others. Being a citizen of Pocomoke and Pocomoke City Volunteer fireman he knows the determination and dedication that is required to be successful.

Above- Jack Tarburton, State Director, U.S.D.A. - It has been through the U.S.D.A -According to the Ceremony Program -"The total cost of the project including purchase of the property will be approximately $1 million. Permanent financing of the project is being provided by the U.S.D.A."

Senator Jim Mathias - A long time friend to Pocomoke City and also had some great words to share with those present.
Two of my dear old friends....John McDaniel and Patrol Officer Ralph Corbin. Other officer's last name is Craven (I believe, help me on this one). If I am not mistaken this officer is the same one that tried to get me to give him my thumb print- to see if I was a fugitive!

This young lady seems to be the back bone to the police department. Angel D. Thornes, Executive Administrative Assistant for the Pocomoke Police Department. That's a pretty large title to hold for such a petite person. But in the course of the past few months I've seen her dig her heels in and work hard just like the others. On one occasion I saw her busy with the new furniture that had been delivered to the new department; and dealing with the headaches that you get when your goods are damaged. The last occasion I ran into her was on the second floor of the old police headquarters on a really hot day. She was in a file closet moving paper files. That's not easy work.

I also think I am correct when I tell you that it was Angel that did the excellant selection of furnishings in the new police department. Each and everyone that holds a position in the police department of Pocomoke City deserve our thanks. They have all done an outstanding job!

Make Way For The New Pocomoke City Police Department

There's going to be plenty of hustle-bustle between the old Pocomoke City Police Dept. on Second Street and their new location on Market Street this week!

And have no fear! I'm quite sure those ugly, over grown shrubs from the previous landscaping will be transformed into another work of pleasant greeneries.

I will provide links later that go back to the first days of renovations in the former body shop building.

I will also provide any updates. Stay tuned! This is an exciting time for so many!

Pocomoke Police Department Nearing Complete Move

Pocomoke City Police Department

Market Street Location

May 31, 2012

Just a little more time and the Pocomoke City Police Department will be opening in the new location on Market Street.

This building is quite different from the current police station on Second Street. From the first step inside the front door (or the back door if that seems to be your preference) the new facility is astounding! I've watched this building go from a body shop to the professional establisment that it is. I know how excited everyone is ..... including myself.

Photo above was taken in what will be the conference room. At the present time it is serving for the delivery of office furnitue.

The Pocomoke City Council alloted a certain amount of funds to be used to purchase new furniture and supplies. The monies have been used very wisely and Angel Thornes, the Executive Administrative Assistant for the Pocomoke City Police Dept., has done a grand job in her selection of office supplies, desks and chairs for the various offices. Angel has also been one of the many that have poured their heart and soul into this move. She deserves so much credit and on the day Councilman Malloy and I stopped by she took the time to give us the tour just to show us how much progress has been made.

I'm not going to tell everything I learned from Angel - I'm going to let the police department brag on their new facility. The most amazing room in the new station? The radio room. The department has bigger screens that produce larger images making it easier to see what cameras in various parts of town send. Because of the location of the new police department radio transmissions will be clearer. One of the images will be of the bay area located in the back of the station. The dispatcher will be able to view the officer as he approaches. With the touch of a button - just like a garage door opener- the doors open in the back of the building, freeing the time an officer would have to spend fumbling for keys to unlock the doork, get back in his patrol car and pull into the garage..... a feature the police department has never had before.

My venture would never be complete without stopping by the current police department.
It's always a pleasure to see Chief Sewell and on this day met Officer Perkins. What a great person and true asset to the department.

I also need to say this. I've watched the new station become a reality. I've met some of the most wonderful people in the past few months. These are good, hard working men. I've seen them hanging from metal beams, walking on stilts, crawling on their knees.....never complaining. I've been locked in a cell, tip toed around newly glued tiles and watched wax dry.

In the past months I've seen the changes in the Pocomoke City Police Department. Recently I had the occasion to meet more of the police officers. This IS a new and improved department! And based on what has been happening in Pocomoke City lately you can believe they "work well with others" .

Other agencies from Virginia, Worcester County Sheriff's Dept., Maryland State Police, Worcester County State's Attorney Beau Oglesby- (I've forgotten many) ALL fit into the equation of fighting crime together. And it shows!

My best to all of you. Keep up the good work!
And thankyou, Chief Sewell and Angel for all of you kindness in the past months.
