Starting a new week with a 2013 JMMB Posting

We recently recalled the passing of The Pocomoke Public Eye's Brenda Wise (posting as "jmmb") on June 11, 2014. I came across the item below that Brenda posted here some eight months earlier (perhaps on her mind was the serious health situation she was confronting). I'm certain if Brenda was with us today, especially in these challenging times, she would still be sharing thoughts of encouragement with us all. -tk

Shortly after Transmedia opened on Willow Street in the late 60s Choppy Layton and Wayne Powell were outside one day hanging two large spotlights to illuminate the façade of the building. The police station was located across the street at the time, just behind the Maryland National Bank building. Orville Outten, the legendary assistant chief, emerged to inspect the proceedings.

"Boys," said Orville, "Don't you think those things are going to be too loud? They're awful big."

"What do you mean?" replied Wayne.

"I don't think we need big, loud speakers blaring all that crazy music around here. You know, Pocomoke is kind of a quiet community." answered Orville.

Wayne could hardly control himself. "Orville, they are lights, not speakers. They are for safety."

"Well, whatever," replied Orville. "Just be sure you keep'em turned down or I will be over here lookin' to lock somebody up."

1969  ..  "The Transmedia Thing" provides entertainment for Pocomoke area teens.

2006  ..  One of the last of an era locally..Windsor's full service gas station in Princess Anne is closing.

Movie, laser show in Snow Hill park

(June 25, 2020) Worcester County Recreation and Parks is bringing a free, drive-in movie experience to Snow Hill, on Saturday, June 27, at 9 p.m.

Families are invited to watch “Trolls” at the John Walter Smith Park.

All movie goers will be asked to follow social distancing guidelines and stay in their designated areas. Space will be available on a first come, first-served basis, with load in beginning at 8 p.m.

After the movie, there will be a laser show and dance party. There will be free popcorn, giveaways and interactive games.

“Folks are anxious for live entertainment,” Program Manager Allen Swiger said. “A drive-in movie is the perfect opportunity for a fun evening with the family, while maintaining social distancing and health guidelines.

“But this is so much more than just a movie,” he continued. “Capping the night with a laser show and dance party will be a blast.”

Keep in mind that Don Moore's Maryland State speed record in the fancy Duesenberg equals all of 54 miles per hour...a truly frightening speed in 1923!

The Y-Restaurant later became well known as the Starlight under different owners.

Pony Ranch started out as a Dairy Queen and later morphed into a real restaurant. The first banana splits in Pocomoke were served at Pony Ranch.

In the 1950's/1960's where else in Pocomoke could you get pizza?  Anyone remember chocolate zips (sort of chocolate milk mixed with small ice chips)?  They were available at most places around town that had soda fountains.
