Accomack County and Town of Chincoteague declare State of Emergency anticipating flooding Monday; Chincoteague under voluntary evacuation - Shore Daily News

Chincoteague- voluntary evacuation

 The Town of Chincoteague’s Emergency Management Team continues to monitor the impending nor’easter.

The Town has declared a local state of emergency at noon today, October 2, 2022.

The National Weather Service’s current forecast has the effects of the nor’easter beginning today and getting increasingly worse through Monday. Impacts will include: wind gusts to 50 mph, periods of heavy rain, and significant tidal flooding. The effects of tidal flooding will begin Monday morning and continue through Tuesday. The high tide cycle will occur between 2AM – 5 AM and 2PM – 5PM through the period. Monday afternoon is forecast at “Major Flooding”.

The Town of Chincoteague is issuing a voluntary evacuation for all of Chincoteague. Those people in the Bunker Hill area and the Ocean Breeze Community are strongly urged to evacuate. No shelter is open at this time. The shelter at Arcadia High School, 8210 Lankford Hwy., Oak Hall, VA will open at 8 AM, Monday morning.

VDOT is monitoring the causeway and will notify the Town approximately one hour prior to any closing. The Town will notify citizens by our Code Red system and other media outlets.

Citizens should rush to complete preparations for the storm. Ensure that your vehicles are fueled and have cash available as fuel pumps and ATM’s will not work if the power should fail. Secure all loose items around the home. Have enough non-perishable food and water to last for at least 3-5 days. Have fresh batteries and flashlights available. WESTOVER, Md. – 47 ABC has learned that five correctional officers suffered non-life threatening injuries when they were assaulted by inmates in a housing unit at Eastern Correctional Institution Wednesday evening.

Forecast nixes big OC event

The inaugural Oceans Calling Festival has been canceled thanks to Mother Nature. Organizers said due to inclement weather from the remnants of Hurricane Ian, they had to make the difficult decision to cancel the three day event.

Due to inclement weather, Accomack County Public Schools with be closed for all students, staff, and 12-month employees on September 30, 2022.

Northampton County Public Schools will be a virtual instruction day for all students and staff.
