                                  Somerset County parents-

Students of Somerset County Public Schools will begin 2023-2024 year in a "staggered" fashion again this year, welcoming back all comprehensive special education students and students who are new to their school on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

Reporting on Tuesday, September 5:

Deal Island Elementary: PreK-3, PreK-4
Crisfield Academy & High: 8th Grade
Greenwood Elementary: 2nd Grade
Princess Anne Elementary: PreK-3, PreK-4
Somerset Intermediate: 6th Grade
Washington Academy & High: 8th Grade
Woodson Elementary: PreK-3, PreK-4
*Comprehensive special education students, all schools/grades*

This allows students who are new to their school an opportunity to familiarize themselves with a new environment and routine, with fewer distractions and more one-on-one help from staff. Parents and guardians can be assured that this schedule change will have no effect on a student’s attendance record, and it will not require the addition of a day to the end of the school year.

All other students will report for their first day of school on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Parents and guardians with additional questions should contact their student's school for more information.

WORCESTER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS-

Tuesday, September 5 is the first day of school for all Worcester County students.

ACCOMACK COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS-

Tuesday, September 5 is the first day of school for all Accomack County students.

Bad weather plan for Somerset public schools

"Say it isn't so" might by what many students are thinking.

A final decision may be made during a Somerset County Board of Education meeting on October 18th on a plan for virtual learning on days when schools otherwise would be closed due to adverse weather conditions.

(Crisfield-Somerset County Times)

(excerpt)

Days off from doing school work because of inclement weather may become a thing of the past for students after the Somerset County Board of Education moved through first reader a virtual instruction plan that would allow teaching to occur online when students are not in school.

Lessons and/or assignments through a device provided by the schools would be for a minimum of four hours for up to eight total inclement weather days this school year. Secondary school students would attend from 8 a.m. to noon and elementary students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New School Resource Officer positions approved for Somerset County schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  July 13, 2022

(Somerset County, MD) – The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the addition of five new School Resource Officer (SRO) positions.

On Tuesday, July 12, 2022, the Somerset County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve five new SRO positions.  This decision was made after weeks of deliberation between partner agencies in response to the increased violence within school systems across the country.  These positions will be funded through a collaborative effort between Somerset County, Somerset County Public Schools, and The Maryland Center for School Safety.  These five new positions are in addition to the four full-time SROs currently assigned to the Public School System.

With the addition of these positions, we anticipate placing SROs in the following schools:  Washington Academy & High School, Crisfield Academy & High School, Somerset Intermediate School, Woodson Elementary School, Deal Island Elementary School, Greenwood Elementary School, and Princess Anne Elementary School.  Advertising for these positions will begin immediately in hopes of filling some or all of them during the beginning of the 22-23 school year.

The safety of our children and schools is paramount, and we believe that having full-time SROs in schools is one of many steps we can take to accomplish this goal.
