The Town of Chincoteague’s Emergency Management Team continues to monitor Hurricane Irene. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Chincoteague Island.

The National Hurricane Center’s current forecast has Hurricane Irene very close to Chincotea...gue late Saturday night and early Sunday morning with hurricane force winds, heavy rain, and tidal flooding arriving by mid-day Saturday.


Currently all non-residents should be evacuated.

Phase III of the Town’s Evacuation Plan will go into affect at 7:00 PM Friday night. Phase III requires a mandatory evacuation of all residents. All residents should be off the island by 12:00 noon Saturday August 27, 2011. Only emergency personnel will be allowed on the island.

The shelter will open at 6:00 AM Saturday, August 27, 2011.

The shelter for Chincoteague Island will be at the Arcadia Middle School 29485 Horsey Road, in Oak Hall. No Pets are allowed in the shelter. Please bring water, food, and medications needed for your family.

In response to Hurricane Irene, we will be staffing two full engine crews from 3pm Saturday through 3pm Sunday.

Some areas of Worcester County are now subject to mandatory evacuations as of 8/27 at 9am.

Pocomoke High School will be open as a shelter as of 8/26 at 5pm.

Ships In Norfolk Ready To Evade Hurricane Earl

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Navy says its ships in the Hampton Roads area are ready to head to sea to evade Hurricane Earl if needed.

The Navy said Tuesday that other operations in the area are normal. But preparations are being made for Earl, including placing sandbags in low-lying areas and removing debris from drainage areas.

Navy personnel have been advised to prepare for evacuation in the event one is necessary.

The National Hurricane Center says Earl has strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane with winds near 135 mph (215 kph) as it moves away from the Virgin Islands.

Earl is on a path that could brush the coast of the U.S. later in the week, though it's too early to tell exactly where it will go.

Coast Guard Medevacs 1 from Fishing Vessel

The Coast Guard medevaced a 38-year-old male 39 nautical miles south east of Chincoteague Inlet Sunday.

The Coast Guard received a call at 10:21 a.m. from a crewmember aboard the fishing vessel Bay Star Seven reporting a crewmember had been complaining of chest pains and had been collapsing.

A 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Chincoteague and emergency medical technician were dispatched to the fishing vessel.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C. arrived on scene and transported both the man and the technician to awaiting emergency medical personnel at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
