If only this tree could talk. It likely witnessed the Shore’s men of military age mobilize for the American War for Independence.

Crisfield loses a community icon.

 

Active in Crisfield's community life for over five decades John "Jay" Tawes has died at the age of 73.

He was a graduate of Crisfield High School class of 1969 and obtained his Bachelor Degree in marketing from the University of Richmond in 1973. He was owner of Tawes Insurance in Crisfield.

Jay loved Crisfield, the people of Crisfield, and devoted more than 50 years of his life in economic development to try and help his community. He served and volunteered for numerous organizations, and was a dedicated member of Immanuel United Methodist Church.

Jay and I double-dated to the PHS Prom in 1969. His date was Jeannie Boston and mine was Sherry Pusey. He will be missed.

Early Sunday fire at Tyson in Oak Hall.

On 12/8/24 @ 4:44 am, Tower 1 (Pocomoke) responded to assist Accomack County units with a working fire at the Tyson Foods Rendering Plant with a crew of 4 and was tasked with checking the roof for extension with a focus on the back side of the building. Crews found hot spots along the exterior wall and roof. Tower 1, New Church, and Parksley personnel overhauled the building and extinguished any remaining fire. Tower 1 crew operated for approximately two hours assisting units on scene.

At 4:27 a.m. (Sunday) units from Atlantic, Chincoteague, Wallops, New Church, Greenbackville, Pocomoke City, Saxis, Bloxom, Parksley, and Onancock responded to a working fire at the Tyson Foods rendering plant in Oak Hall. First responders reported smoke and flames in the plant. Everyone working at the time was successfully evacuated. Fire units remained on the scene for over two hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the extent of the damage has not yet been determined.

Golf cart mishap turns deadly.

A 54-year-old man died early Sunday afternoon in a mishap involving a golf cart he was driving.  Virginia State Police said Robert Jude Vandornick Jr. took a curve too short and drove over an embankment.  The golf cart overturned and landed on top of him.  Location of the accident was given as Robin Lane in Horntown, within the Trails End Campground.

A house fire that occurred yesterday afternoon on Crisfield Highway in Westover is under investigation.  One occupant had to be assisted from the burning home by a passer-by. Two dogs were able to escape the home unharmed. Two individuals were transported to Tidal Health in Salisbury for smoke inhalation, which in each case is non-life threatening. The fire at the two story, wood frame, single family home caused an estimated $150,000 in structural damage and $250,000 in loss of contents including antiques. The blaze broke out in the first-floor kitchen, but the cause is not known at this time.

The cargo ship Dali passed under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Monday on its way to Norfolk for repairs.  The bridge was closed to traffic during the ship's passage while many onlookers viewed from land.  The Dali's collision into the Francis Scott Key bridge in March destroyed that bridge.

As the NTSB continues its investigation the city of Baltimore and the ship owners reached an agreement for its departure.  It included agreement for crew members to be available for civil depositions.  We have not seen reference to information specifically concerning insurance.

Traffic Notice!

Holly Court will remain closed while crews continue to remove the contents of the silo. Unfortunately, we have to remind those who may be driving in that area that the placement of the cones and Fire Truck are there for a reason and you are not permitted to enter Holly Court. You are also reminded that driving over the fire hoses is against the Maryland Traffic Code unless you have expressed permission from the Fire Officer/Chief on the scene.  The transfer station is not open.  We also ask that pedestrian traffic remain behind the barricades and do not venture onto the property. Every effort by our First Responders is focused on making the scene as safe as possible for the contractors and personnel on scene.
