UPDATE: Rabies- Pocomoke, Marion Station, and Salisbury areas--

 


Rabies Advisory Notice: A Confirmed Rabid fox has been found in the vicinity of Colona Rd., Pocomoke, MD.

  • If you, your family or your pets have had contact with the rabid raccoon, contact Worcester County Health Department’s Office of Environmental Health immediately at 410-352-3234. Contact includes bites, scratches or other direct contact to persons or pets.
  • Report immediately sick animals and those acting in an unusual manner, as there may or will be additional rabid animals in this area. Prevent contact with people or pets. Contact Animal Control or the local police/Sheriff’s office.
  • Do not handle your pet if it has contact with a wild animal.
  • Make sure all your pets (especially outdoor pets) have CURRENT rabies vaccinations.
  • Do not let your pets roam free or leave food outdoors. This will attract wild and stray animals to your property.
  • Teach children to stay away from wild animals and animals they don’t know.

Rabies case near Westover

WESTOVER — The Somerset County Health Department reports a raccoon collected from the 7400 block Mennonite Church Road tested positive for rabies by the Maryland State Laboratory.

The raccoon had encountered a resident’s dog, and a fight ensued, with the raccoon was sent off for testing on March 12.

Residents are asked to report sick or strange-acting wildlife, or bites or scratches they may receive from the animal to the Health Department, 443-523-1700 during business hours. After hours or weekends call 443-859-4419.

Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age. Vaccinated pets that come in contact with rabid or suspected rabid animals must be given a booster rabies vaccination within five days of the contact.

If an unvaccinated pet comes in contact with rabid or suspected rabies the pet must be quarantined for four months.

RABID Cat Found In Stockton

Worcester County Health Department warns of rabid cat found in Stockton

Stockton, Md. (Oct. 5, 2011) – The Worcester County Health Department has confirmed an adult black cat found near the intersection of Greenbackville Road and George Island Landing Road in Stockton tested positive for rabies.
The large adult black cat was described as having a red collar that had green and yellow flowers and a bell on it.
 
Deputy Health Officer Dr. Andrea Mathias warns that any person, pet or other animal that may have had contact this cat could be at risk for rabies exposure. To report any contact with or exposure to these cats, call the Worcester County Health Department immediately at 410-641-9559. If you call after hours or on the weekend, follow the instructions on the answering machine for reporting an animal bite or rabies exposure incident to reach on-call staff.  
 
Please report any sick animals and those acting in an unusual manner since there may be additional rabid animals in this area.
 
If contact is suspected with a pet, do not handle the pet barehanded.
 
Make sure all your pets have current rabies vaccinations.
 
Do not allow pets to roam outdoors unattended and do not leave pet food, especially cat food, outdoors.
 
Residents are encouraged to talk with their neighbors and report any possible exposures.
 
If a person has been bitten he or she should seek immediate medical care. Post exposure treatment is necessary to prevent rabies.

If not prevented, rabies is fatal. If a pet has been bitten, contact your veterinarian.
