HEATWAVE Again Today!!
HOT AGAIN TODAY!
Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself against heat-related illnesses:
- Keep cool in an air-conditioned area. Take a cool shower or a bath. Consider a trip to the mall or a local library or visit a friend with air conditioning. Spending at least two hours per day in air conditioning significantly reduces the number of heat-related illnesses.
- When temperatures reach the upper 90s or above, a fan may not prevent heat-related illness.
- Drink plenty of fluids (2-4 glasses of cool fluids each hour.) To replace salt and minerals lost from sweating, drink fruit juice or a sports beverage during exercise or when you have to work outside. However, talk to your doctor first if you're on a fluid-restricted diet or medications, or on a low-salt diet.
- Avoid sunburn and wear light clothing. Sunburn limits your body's ability to keep itself cool and causes loss of body fluids. Use sunscreen with a higher SPF. Lighter-weight clothing that is loose fitting and light colored is more comfortable during extreme temperatures. Use a hat to keep the head cool.
- Give your body a break as the heat wave can be stressful on your body. Limit physical activity until your body adjusts to the heat.
Never leave children or pets in cars.
- Temperatures inside a car with can reach over 150 degrees quickly, resulting in heat stroke and death.
- Use the "buddy system" if you're working outside. If youre working outside and suffer a heat-related illness, you could become confused or could lose consciousness. Therefore, Make sure someone else knows of you plans.

4-H Camp Registration ~ Deadline July 2, 2010
Accomack County 4-H Junior Camp will be held July 19th through the 23rd at Airfield 4-H Center in Wakefield, VA. The cost is $248 which includes the camp fee, lodging, meals, transportation via charter bus to and from camp and a camp t-shirt.Children ages 9-13 may attend. Campers must be 9 years old by September 30th. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in classes such as swimming, canoeing, leather craft, riflery, theatrical arts, journalism, archery, fishing, robotics, cooking, animal science and new this year CSI detective.
Registration forms are available at the Accomack County Extension Office located at 23203 Front Street, Accomac between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday or you may call 787-1361 to have one mailed to you.
The last day to register for camp is Friday, July 2nd. Full payment of $248 is due upon registration.

Another HOT Day-- Maybe Even HOTTER
The Accomac Office of the Virginia Department of Health would like to remind everyone as temperatures continue to remain extremely high, the Eastern Shore Health District advises citizens to protect themselves by keeping cool and using common sense.
It is important to drink plenty of fluids, wear light weight, light colored, loose fitting clothing, put on sunscreen when outdoors, limit outdoor activities to morning and evening hours, rest often, stay cool indoors if possible, check on family members and neighbors and to monitor yourself and others for heat exhaustion.
Heat exhaustion is a mild form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids. Those most prone to heat exhaustion are elderly people, people with high blood pressure and people working or exercising in a hot environment.
Warning signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, fainting, cool or moist skin, pulse rate that is fast and weak and breathing that is fast and shallow.
If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may progress to a heat stroke. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms are severe or the victim has heart problems or high blood pressure. Otherwise, help the victim to cool off and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or last longer than one hour.

And PLEASE DON'T FORGET-- As you go about your day, trying to keep cool in these record breaking temperatures, remember kindly your animals that are outside. They NEED to be cool also! DON'T leave them unattended in your vehicle for any amount of time.
An empty soda bottle filled with water and frozen makes a wonderful toy for dogs.
Think about it: Would you want to sit in a hot car with the windows rolled up and wait???

Cooler Temperatures For The Area.......So Far
A large series of thunderstorms struck the Eastern Shore last night. The storms caused winds of at least 47 mph recorded at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, requiring level two wind restrictions. Motorcycles, large pick-up campers, camper trailers, house trailers, anything being towed, vehicles with exterior cargo, empty tractor-trailers, small six-wheel trucks, such as moving vans, rental trucks and school buses were not allowed to cross while the restrictions are in place.
The cold front brought cooler temperatures and less humidity to the area which has been experiencing a streak of hot temperatures and high humidity.

The Last of the Summer Days
I'm sure alot of you woke up to the morning the same way I did...........with your extra hour of sleep! Big deal, right!? My husband assured me that instead of it being 11:00 a.m. as the bedroom clock said, it was only 10:00.
Well, that's fine, I guess, if you like the extra hour sleeping but I had rather have that extra hour left in my day. I like the extra hour of daylight even if I choose to do nothing outside. Beach days are gone, gardening days have dwindled to the few fall chores. If you do it outside now there's no time to even change your mind.
Looking back on the summer I remembered all those hot, sunny, humid days we had. I like those brightly lit summer days and I even enjoy the humidity! I'm going to miss the sound of thunder in a distance and the soft breeze. I'm going to miss my abundance of blue birds, humming birds and finches. And I am even going to miss (somewhat) the sound and the bites of the mosquitoes and sleeping with the windows wide open.
I am a sunlight person. I like the sunny days, even if they are just warm. It's the long dreary days and nights that get to me. And I suppose that maybe there will be a few more warm sunny evenings to light the wok and sit on the patio watching the sun set. Our "world" is in the autumn mode now. It's time to rake leaves, mulch flower beds and take one long glimpse of the colorful sketches that Nature gives us this time of year.I'll do all that while at the same time missing the summer.
