The George Washington Hotel opened in June 1931 on the corner of 10th Street and the Boardwalk in what was then the northern section of Ocean City. At the time of construction, it was the tallest building in town and would remain so until 1970 when the High Point South condominium was built far up the beach on the Gold Coast.
A landmark for ships at sea, the George Washington was the first structure sighted by charter boats returning from the offshore fishing trips. It featured a ballroom on its top floor and also boasted one of the most elegant porches on the Boardwalk.
The George Washington Hotel was demolished in January 1990 and today the Americana Hotel occupies the former site.

Pocomoke Walmart Has Grand Reopening This Weekend
Newly Remodeled Walmart Supercenter Celebrates Grand Reopening
Ceremony to highlight store upgrades, commitment to community on Friday, Oct. 21
The newly remodeled Walmart Supercenter located at 2132 Old Snow Hill Road will host a grand reopening celebration on Friday, Oct. 21, at 8 a.m.
The project represents Walmart’s reinvestment in the store, its customers, and the community. The remodel provides a new fresh produce experience and remodeled electronics department and pharmacy. Fresh donuts and bread will be additions to Walmart’s bakery options. Customers can also expect a new and improved customer service center with Money Services and Walmart Pickup. Shopping is more convenient than ever as Pocomoke residents can shop millions of items on Walmart.com, many of which can be shipped for free to any Walmart store through Walmart Pickup.
The store includes a remodeled pharmacy with a full range of products, immunizations, and services. Walmart pharmacists are ready to assist customers with product and prescription questions. Pocomoke residents can easily transfer prescriptions and order refills on the go with the Walmart mobile app.
As of Oct. 21, the store hours are 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. daily.
“We are looking forward to re-introducing our store to the community with expanded offerings and a fresh look. Our everyday low prices will remain the same, but we’re adding greater convenience and a new and improved local grocery shopping experience,” said Tanya Adams Justice, store manager.
Join the Grand Opening Celebration
Local associates will provide a special welcome to members of the Pocomoke community with a grand reopening celebration. A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Oct. 21 at 8 a.m. followed by family activities and free food samples while supplies last. On Saturday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 23, customers can enjoy a grand reopening event with sampling and family friendly activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Job Opportunities
At Walmart, associates have access to competitive wages, affordable benefits and the chance to build a career. More than 75% of store management teams started as hourly associates, and 40 percent of those promotions went to associates within the first year of their employment.
Committed to the Community
Walmart is committed to serving the Pocomoke community and will support organizations through an approximate $2,000 investment in the coming months. The commitment to community goes beyond philanthropy. This investment is a whole company undertaking that is woven into Walmart’s day-to-day business activities, creating value by accelerating job mobility, developing suppliers and small businesses, lowering the environmental footprint of Walmart’s operations and more.
