Prominent business and civic leader dies

Hale Harrison of Ocean City passed away this week at the age of 75.  Below is an excerpt from his obituary.

" Hale graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 1965. He attended the University of Maryland at College Park, where he studied Business and Agriculture. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta. After two years of College, Hale returned to Ocean City to operate the family hotel business. From there, he remained active in growing the hotel/restaurant business known today as the Harrison Group Resort Hotels and Restaurants as well as maintaining numerous acres of farmland in Worcester County. Hale was a former City Councilman and the former Chairman of the Planning and Zoning for the Town of Ocean City. He served for 47 years on the Board of Directors for Calvin B. Taylor Banking Co. and was elected Chair of the Taylor Bank Board of Directors in 2020. Hale was proud to declare that he was the youngest to join the Taylor Bank Board of Directors in 1975 and has been the longest to serve. He served on the Atlantic General Hospital Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Berlin Heritage Foundation, Ocean City Chamber of Commerce as well as a member of the Young Presidents Organization, now known as World Presidents Organization."

UPDATED: Passing of Stockton's Fire Chief

According to Tim Jerscheid, the assistant chief for the Stockton Volunteer Fire Company, a funeral service for Chief Payne is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd at 11:00 a.m. The service will be held at the Stockton Volunteer Fire Company, and is open to the public.

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the loss of our Fire Chief, Neil Payne, who answered his last alarm on 10/16/2022. Chief Payne has been serving in the Stockton Volunteer Fire Company since 1986, and has been Chief for the last 29 years. We thank Neil for his many years in the fire service both in Stockton and the greater Worcester County area. 

This is a sudden and tremendous loss to the Stockton community and the local firefighting community. Please keep the Payne family and the entire Stockton Volunteer Fire Company in your thoughts and prayers. 

Neil was a son, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a leader, a mentor, a neighbor and a friend. We will sorely miss his smile and his sense of humor. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time. 

Rest easy Chief, we will take it from here.

Student charged in Pocomoke school threat

 Worcester County Sheriff’s officers have charged a Pocomoke Middle School student in connection with a threat to the school on September 29th. Investigation revealed the threat was not credible and that the social media post was created by a student. No firearm was ever brought to the school. Charges for the student have been referred to the Department of Juvenile Services –

• disruption of school operations
• threat of mass violence
• false statement to an officer
• causing a false statement to an officer

Pocomoke burglary/arson

Burglary in Pocomoke Turns Arson

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. - Worcester County authorities say a Pocomoke City home was burglarized and set ablaze early Monday morning.

The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office said the Pocomoke City Police Department were investigating a burglary that occurred at around 4:45 a.m. at a home at 601 Young St. Upon arrival, the officers saw the rear of the single-story home on fire, and spreading fast.

The Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company, along with firefighters from Stockton, Snow Hill and New Church, Va., worked together to quickly extinguish the flames. Fire investigators from the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was intentionally set.

Anyone with information relating to the fire is asked to contact the Fire Marshal’s office at 410-632-5666 or the Maryland Arson Hotline at 800-492-7529. Anyone with information relating to the burglary is asked to contact the Pocomoke Police Department at 410-957-1600. You can remain anonymous.

Small earthquake on Western Shore

Small earthquake rumbles parts of Central Maryland

A small earthquake shook parts of Maryland late Tuesday evening.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 2.0 earthquake occurred near Sykesville, in Central Maryland, at around 11:49 p.m. Tuesday with a depth of around 3.1 miles.

According to the agency’s Did You Feel It site — which gathers user-submitted reports of earthquake intensity — more than 200 people felt the earthquake, with most reporting weak to light shaking.

The quake was most widely felt in Carroll, Howard and Anne Arundel counties, but reports of weak shaking were received from as far away as Frederick, Gaithersburg and Silver Spring.

A spokesperson for the Howard County Police Department told WTOP that 911 operators received a few calls from residents who had “heard a boom or felt a rumble.”

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police’s Westminster barrack had not received any reports of injuries or damage in their area as of Wednesday morning.

Last year, a small 2.1-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Clarksville.
