TIME MACHINE ... Carl Sagan quote.

( A quote from the late astronomer Carl Sagan.. referencing earth appearing as a tiny unspectacular pale blue dot hardly noticeable in the vast universe surrounding it.)

“We succeeded in taking that picture from [deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideaologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitands of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity--in all this vastness-- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us... To my mind, there is perhaps no better demostration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

TIME MACHINE ... Napoleon-Eastern Shore Connection?

(Reader-friendly viewing of news archives material)

The first lines of a biography read "Napoleon Bonaparte was a military general who became the first emperor of France. His drive for military expansion changed the world."

A newspaper article published more than a hundred years ago reveals a possible Eastern Shore connection to Napoleon!

October, 1902
The Indianapolis Journal (Indianapolis, Ind.)

A BIT OF HISTORY.

How Napoleon Was to Be Brought from La Rochelle to Virginia.

Baltimore American.
The sale of the colonial silver and antique furniture in the old King mansion, three or four miles south of Princess Anne, Somerset county, Maryland, marks the severance of the present and the past in a stately old home where a century ago fashion and wealth reigned and where centered the political and social influence of the county. Piece by piece the land was sold, but the house, of solid brick, weathered the storm and stands to-day a monument to the past.

In the King house at the beginning of the last century, and for many years thereafter, lived Colonel King, a stately gentleman of the old school, with business and social connections in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington. Among his friends was Stephen Girard. Tradition has it that Colonel King had planned for the escape of Napoleon from France after the second fall of Paris, a disaster which he plainly foresaw.

Mr. Girard Is said to have informed Napoleon of his plan, which was to spirit him away to America. For this purpose the fastest clipper which Mr. Girard could procure was dispatched to La Rochelle, where Napoleon was to take passage. Bonaparte acceded to the plan, and after his abdication in Paris he hastened to La Rochelle to embark for America.

His enemies, however, were in hot pursuit and on the alert and when he reached the port he was alarmed to find the harbor filled with the ships of the allies. He realized the impossibility of reaching the clipper ship, and even if once on board he saw the futility of escape from the harbor. He did not long hesitate what to do.

He selected the British warship Bellerophon, then in the harbor, and went aboard committing himself, as he stated in a letter at the time, "to the protection of the laws of the most powerful, the most persevering and the most generous of his foes." He little realized at the time that he was surrendering himself into life captivity and that the barren island of St. Helena was to be his prison.

Mr. Guard's plan was to bring Napoleon to America and to land him on the coast of Accomac county, Virginia, whose numerous inlets and bays afforded a most desirable harbor for the ship. The residents of the interior were most hospitable and would gladly have aided Mr. Girard in the concealment of the deposed Emperor had such course been deemed necessary by developments in France or on the continent.

Mr. Girard selected the eastern shore of Virginia as an asylum for Bonaparte because the Philadelphian had once lived there, and because, knowing its people, he knew he could trust them. When the young Frenchman first arrived in America he settled In Accomac county, and it was thence that he removed to Philadelphia.

Communication was slow in those days. There were no steamships which crossed the ocean in a few days. There were no submarine cables. Weeks were required then, where only days now count, for a voyage from Europe to America. Colonel King had heard of the battle of Waterloo and of the overthrow of Napoleon, and when a rumor reached Princess Anne that Napoleon had landed on the coast of Accomac he believed Mr. Girard's plans had carried safely and that the greatest military genius of the age was in America.

The report of the landing seemed so well known that Colonel King concluded that secrecy had not been deemed a necessary precaution by Mr. Girard. It was also reported that Napoleon would visit Princess Anne. According to legend Colonel King ordered out the local militia, of which he was commander, and all preparations were made to march to the Virginia line, about fifteen miles distant, to meet Bonaparte.

In the absence of more specific information as to the movements of the French Emperor the march was not immediately begun. After waiting for several hours for news the citizen soldiers returned to their homes, fully prepared to be called together to essay forth to greet the great Frenchman.

The story of the origin of the intimacy of Napoleon and Stephen Girard is an interesting one and is of sufficient explanation of the activity of the latter in providing means of escape for the Emperor. They first met while Mr. Girard was negotiating for America the loan by which France was paid for the territory of Louisiana, during the administration of President Jefferson. Then began the friendship which lasted throughout that long imprisonment of Napoleon on the solitary rock-bound island in the Atlantic and who can tell but that in those legends of the plots to rescue Napoleon from his dreary prison and to give the world another flash of his genius was Stephen Girard with his enormous wealth the chief actor?

DEATH INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN SOMERSET CO.

(PRINCESS ANNE, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a Somerset County man who was found dead in his apartment this morning by a friend who checked on him.

The deceased is identified as Kevin M. Green, 34, of the 11000-block of Stewart Neck Road, Princess Anne, Md.  Green was pronounced dead at his residence.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. today, Maryland State Police criminal investigators responded to Green’s apartment to conduct an investigation into his death.  The preliminary investigation indicates a friend of Green’s went to the residence to check on him this morning.  Green had not been heard from since June 3rd and he had failed to report for classes yesterday at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where he was a graduate student.

When Green’s friend received no response at the door today, he forced entry into the apartment and found Green on his bed.  Emergency medical services personnel responded and determined Green was deceased.

Investigators found no signs of foul play in the apartment and observed no obvious signs of trauma on Green’s body.  His body will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

The investigation is continuing.

Representative Scott Rigell Responds to Prisoner Swap

Washington, D.C. – Representative Scott Rigell (VA-02) released the following statement regarding the President's unlawful release of five Taliban fighters:

"Just as the nation was beginning to grasp the magnitude of ineptness at the Veterans Administration, President Obama’s unlawful release of five Taliban fighters to secure the return of Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has given Congress and the American people yet another reason to question his fitness to lead.

"While the release of an American was welcomed news, the President’s actions raise three serious concerns: 1) the President’s persistent refusal to subjugate his will to the law; 2) the ability of the released Taliban leaders to re-engage in the Taliban’s fanatical mission to find and kill Americans, and; 3) the circumstances leading to Sgt Bergdahl’s imprisonment by the Taliban.

"Though the nature of Sgt Bergdahl’s disappearance and capture merit a full investigation, the remaining two questions point to deep, systemic failures of the Obama Administration, of a further collapse of the values needed to govern properly, and of the core competency of the President himself. The law requiring that the President provide Congress with 30-days’ notice is unambiguous, and he broke it.

"If there is any hope for the remaining days of Obama’s presidency, he needs to draw from a far deeper well of wisdom. He needs to grasp the powerful truth that strict adherence to the Constitution is his sworn duty.

"The House Armed Services Committee, of which I am a member, will conduct a hearing on this next week, and we will fight to uphold our constitutional mandate to provide effective oversight."

SURF DOG RICOCHET ANNOUNCES PUBLICATION OF HER NEW BOOK

Ricochet: Riding a Wave of Hope with the Dog Who Inspires MillionsBy Judy Fridono with Kay Pflatz

The moving story behind the YouTube Sensation,
which garners more than 4.3 million views!

San Diego, CA, June 5, 2014— Hero dog, therapy dog, surf dog and service dog turned SURFice dog®, Ricochet launched her new book “Ricochet” on June 3rd. Within 12 hours it was at #46 on Amazon.com’s best seller list.

In the new non fiction book (published by HCI Books) Author Judy Fridono weaves the true story of a dog who went from puppy prodigy, to service dog dropout, to inspirational phenomenon… a beautiful golden retriever named Ricochet teaches us all that by following our hearts, we can live out our destiny, and become a force for good in the world.

After suffering a life of loss, Judy Fridono began training service dog puppies to make a positive difference in the world. Her "puppy prodigy," Ricochet, showed boundless potential surpassing every milestone. But out of the blue, the puppy with so much promise completely lost her focus to train, preferring to chase birds on the beach instead. Regretfully, Judy had no choice but to release Ricochet from the service dog program, leaving her disappointed and disheartened.

But the presumed detour became a journey of infinite possibilities when Ricochet found her doggie destiny in the  most unexpected of places: on a surfboard. When Judy finally embraced Ricochet's true calling, amazing things began to unfold. Then the four-legged student became the teacher, showing Judy--and the world--just how much good one dog can do. Because of Ricochet's gift, a teenager with a debilitating spinal cord injury received the much needed therapy to walk at his high school graduation; a young boy with autism finally found his voice; and a soldier trapped by post-traumatic stress regained his freedom. These, and many more inspiring stories, reveal how Ricochet is on a mission to transform countless lives by "pawing" it forward. She is the only SURFice dog® in the world that surfs with people with disabilities, kids with special needs, wounded warriors and veterans with PTSD as an assistive aid.

A true pawtobiography about the healing power of an ordinary dog with an extraordinary spirit. Ricochet is a reminder to stay true to ourselves, celebrate our uniqueness, and appreciate the vast ocean of potential inherent in each of us. To order your copy go to http://www.surfdogricochet.com and click on "Ricochet's book".

This is a beautiful story about the journey of one very special human/canine team and the powerful impact they have had on so many human lives. Ricochet is a truly inspirational read that will not only make you laugh and cry, but also confirm what great love, trust, and dedication can achieve. —Victoria Stilwell, author of Train Your Dog Positively

From The Desk Of Pocomoke City Police Chief, Kelvin D. Sewell

Last week I received a complaint from an individual whose family member(s) name appeared on the Pocomoke City monthly arrest log that is put out to the media by The Pocomoke City Police Department each month. The list consists of names of suspects some of whom are recidivist, (Repeat offenders) who commit crimes here in Pocomoke City.

The names and charges that appear on the Pocomoke City Police monthly arrest list are considered public knowledge. This information could also be obtained by individuals who have computers with internet access. (Maryland Judiciary website)

Pocomoke City Police Officers are tasked each and every day with keeping the citizens of Pocomoke City safe from individuals who decide to commit crimes. A Criminal Citation is considered an on-view arrest and must appear in court for the charge issued, just as an arrest that requires an officer to detain and handcuff the individual. Virginia Health Dept. Warns Of Whooping Cough

The Eastern Shore Health District urges all of its residents to stay current on their immunizations, in order to protect those in our community who are the most vulnerable to serious illness and death caused by Pertussis (Whooping Cough).

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease spread from person to person by coughing and sneezing. It is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Illness typically starts like a cold, with a runny nose, sneezing and mild cough. The cough lasts 1-2 weeks and then worsens, occurring in fits, sometimes followed by a whooping noise, gagging, or vomiting (but not in every case). The disease can be very serious in children less than 1 year of age, in whom it can cause lung infections and, less often, seizures or inflammation of the brain. In rare cases, Pertussis can result in death, especially in infants. In 2013, more than 24,000 cases were reported in the United States, resulting in 9 deaths (all deaths were among infants under the age of 3 months); 411 cases were confirmed in 2013 in the state of Virginia.

"The single most effective way to prevent Pertussis is vaccination," said David O. Matson, MD PhD, director of the Eastern Shore Health District. Protection from childhood vaccine wears off over time, generally in five to ten years, so teens and adults should be revaccinated. Unfortunately, many teens and adults unknowingly carry the bacteria without symptoms or have mild illness because their first vaccine doses at a young age protect them from serious disease, but not from carrying the bacteria and not from spreading Pertussis. They are often the source of infection for infants too young to be protected by vaccination. All parents, siblings, grandparents, and caregivers of infants should make sure their Pertussis vaccine is current, to help protect the vulnerable infant population. It also should be emphasized that anyone who works with infants, whether in healthcare, daycare or nurseries, such as church nurseries, must be up-to-date for their vaccines received.

Anyone experiencing Pertussis symptoms is urged to voluntarily isolate themselves at home and as soon as possible call their primary care physician, in order for the physician to assess them and to begin a treatment of an appropriate antibiotic, should their physician decide to prescribe an antibiotic. Close contacts of patients with Pertussis will also be treated, in order to prevent the additional spread of disease in the community.

Bureau Initiative Focuses on Child Sex Tourism

FBI Photo
Help the Victims, Apprehend the Abusers

05/30/14
Last month, the FBI asked for the public’s help in a case involving a suspected serial child predator who for years taught in private international schools overseas. The suspect committed suicide after his employer saw pornographic images on his thumb drive, but as part of our subsequent investigation—when we began the process of identifying and notifying the victims shown in these images—we also asked that possible victims and others who may have information come forward, not only to aid investigators but to potentially access our victim assistance services.

Child sex tourism—people traveling to another country specifically to engage in illegal sexual conduct with children—is a very real issue that causes devastating and long-lasting psychological and physical consequences for victims. And the problem is growing, thanks to the relative ease of international travel coupled with the popularity of the Internet in helping individuals exchange information about how and where to find child victims in foreign locations.

The U.S. State Department estimates that more than a million children are exploited each year in the global commercial sex trade. That’s in addition to the untold number of young victims of non-commercial sexual conduct.

But whether it involves commercial or non-commercial sex acts, the FBI—in conjunction with our domestic and international law enforcement partners—investigates U.S. citizens and permanent residents who travel overseas to engage in illegal sexual conduct with children under the age of 18.

Since 2008, our Child Sex Tourism Initiative has employed proactive strategies to address the crime, including working with foreign law enforcement and non-governmental organizations to provide child victims with support services and to investigate and prosecute individuals engaging in child sex tourism.

The FBI also shares intelligence products with our overseas law enforcement partners that focus on trends, methods of operations, offenders, etc. And we offer training to foreign law enforcement and non-governmental organizations to build capacity and develop an effective team approach to address the problem. Intelligence sharing and training help develop cohesive multi-disciplinary teams, which in turn enable better international cooperation during the investigation of these crimes.

Children from developing countries are often seen as easy targets by Americans. Our investigations, however, have shown that American perpetrators travel to a variety of locations—from less developed areas in Southeast Asia and Central and South America to more developed areas in Europe. But it makes no difference where these crimes occur—any U.S. citizen or permanent resident who engages in sexual contact with a minor overseas is subject to prosecution under various U.S. laws.

And these laws were strengthened in 2003 with the passage of the federal PROTECT Act, which authorized a variety of additional prosecutive remedies and other tools to use against those who victimize children. It also makes clear that there is no statute of limitations for crimes involving the abduction or physical or sexual abuse of a child.

So a word of warning to perpetrators of this horrendous crime: No matter where you go, no matter how long it takes, you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

And a word of comfort to the victims: The FBI will work with your countries’ authorities and non-governmental organizations to bring perpetrators to justice and to help coordinate the services you need.
