August 3, 1492 - Palos de la Frontera, Spain

Today Christopher Columbus announced that, out of an abundance of caution, he has decided to cancel his voyage in search of a shorter passage to Cipangu and the Orient. In a prepared statement Columbus stated, "It's just too dangerous. There might be monsters and cannibals and we most certainly will encounter thunderstorms and you know how leaky these wooden ships are. I think we shall sail up to Portugal and discover some Mateus or maybe a good Port, instead. It's just a whole lot closer."
