Pocomoke City Police Officers were dispatched to a domestic with shots fired complaint at approximately 9:30 PM on Monday, May 27, 2013 at 1709 Cedar Street, Pocomoke City, Maryland. Upon the officer’s arrival the victim was removed from the area for protection, no injuries were reported. 

 

The initial investigation revealed that a domestic erupted between husband and wife, which resulted in the discharge of several shots fired from a handgun. 

 

The suspect, Joseph Peter Donoway then barricaded himself into the residence and turned off all the lights of the home to avoid detection. Contact with the assailant was attempted for several hours and at approximately 12:50 AM entry was made into the rear of the home and the suspect was removed without incident with the assistance of the Worcester County STAR Team and the Maryland State Police.

STATE POLICE MEMORIAL DAY INITIATIVES YIELD RESULTS

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Troopers’ enforcement initiatives throughout the state yield significant results this Memorial Day weekend.

The Maryland State Police conducted traffic enforcement initiatives throughout the state during this unofficial start to the summer travel season. During this Memorial Day weekend, all 22 state police installations made their presence known. As troopers made numerous traffic stops focused on impaired or distracted drivers, aggressive and speeding motorists, as well as those who were not properly seat belted

During this four day weekend over 9,700 vehicles were stopped by troopers. Preliminary statistics revealed approximately 6,828 traffic citations were issued along with approximately 5,164 warnings. In addition, 102 motorists were arrested for impaired driving, 51 people were arrested for various drug offenses and 73 were arrested for various other criminal violations. Additional initiatives will continue throughout the summer travel season.

The Maryland State Police encourage motorists to plan ahead, be considerate, courteous and patient while traveling. Always reduce as many distractions as possible while driving. If you find yourself impaired, call a friend or family member, or use public transportation. If you see a driver you think is impaired or driving their vehicle in an unsafe manner, keep a safe distance and contact law enforcement.

The additional State Police patrols are in support of the Maryland Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiatives to reduce crashes on the roadways. The overtime funding for additional patrols was provided by grants from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.

Hostage/Barricade Situation In Pocomoke City Last Night

 Pocomoke City Police Department  responded to the scene of a standoff on Cedar Street around 9:30 PM Monday night.

Police say around 9:30 PM Monday night, they received a call of shots fired in a residence at 1709 Cedar Street. Police responded to the call and reportedly set up a command post shortly after.

According to police, two people were involved in the incident.   Joe Donaway  reportedly fired off five rounds in the house then barracading himself in the home prompting his wife to allegedly exit the house and go to a neighbor's residence.
 
When police entered the home  Mr. Donaway was taken into custody without incident.  There were no injuries reported.

A SWAT team was brought in to assist with the situation.

Since yesterday the committee members have found that rescheduling for June would cause a scheduling conflict with the Elks Lodge. Keep in mind that the Crisfield Elks Lodge schedules so many other wonderful events other than provide a place for mudbogging and making us comfortable on race day.

 

A new date will be decided and I will have all of that information for you when I receive it.

 

 The next race date is Saturday, July 13, 2013 in Snow Hill sponsored by the Snow Hill Volunteer Fire Company.

 

This is the first time the Snow Hill Volunteer Company has sponsored a mud bog and I hope all of you will help make it a success. More information will be posted soon.

Name Of Donor On Each Brick.

Baltimore, March 23- Congressman David J. Lewis, father of the American Parcel Post system, in his most roseate dreams never contemplated the coming of the time when so bulky a package as a brick church could be sent through the mails.

Yet a project is on foot to do this very thing. The mails will be burdened with the church brick by brick, however, and the thousands of them required to erect the edifice will each be stamped and addressed to "Methodist Church, Wenona, Somerset County, Md."

The Representative from Western Maryland will be asked to be among the senders of the first bricks. President Wilson also will be requested to mail a brick or two.

The congregation of Wenona Church desires to rebuild the edifice, which was destroyed by fire March 1 during a terrific wind storm. Wenona, by the way, is on Deals Island, Chesapeake Bay, where the oyster is the chief subject of conversation and the chief source of income. It is 26 miles from Princess Anne, the county seat.

It took years of effort for the congregation to build the first church, which was a frame structure. No insurance was paid after the fire, for the blaze started from an exploding gasoline lamp, and this absolved the insurance company from financial obligation. The accident was felt throughout the whole community, for the nearest place of worship of another Methodist congregation is miles away. The Wenona church had 800 men, women and children in its flock.

For the last two or three weeks the communicants have been discussing ways and means, and finally some of them hit upon the unique plan of "building the new church by parcel post." The idea "took" immediately, and Denwood W. White, treasurer of the congregation, indorsed the project and now it is a well-defined campaign.

No effort will be made to have all the bricks of a uniform size, shape, weight, or color. Any variety will do, from the white enameled kind that they use to build mantels to the heavy paving brick.

An interesting thing will be the memorial feature of the undertaking. The sender of each brick is requested to write his or her name on the surface. This side will be turned inward and the edifice, when completed, will be a mammoth roster of donors.
The contributors will doubtless be persons from all over the country, although Marylanders are expected to be the first to send bricks. And among the "foreigners" looked upon as possible patrons are the various Representatives and Senators who supported the Lewis bill.

In the meantime Postmaster Vetra, of Wenona, is making arrangements to store the bricks upon their arrival until a sufficient number have accumulated to make possible the beginning of building operations. The bricks will go to Princess Anne, and must be carried by rural route all the way to Wenona.

Having cleared both the Maryland House and Senate the Pocomoke City Sunday Blue Law bill was ready to be signed into law by the governor, clearing the way for Sunday merchandise sales in Pocomoke City. In a 1974 referendum the Pocomoke City area voted against lifting Sunday Blue Law restrictions while the rest of Worcester County voted in favor and was permitting the Sunday sales. The bill to bring Pocomoke City in line with the remainder of the county was co-sponsored by House Of Delegates members Russell O. Hickman of Worcester County, R.C. (Biggy) Long of Somerset County, and Joseph J. Long of Wicomico County.

The State Roads Commission awarded a contract just in excess of $25,000 for construction of a one mile concrete road from Stockton to the Virginia line. P.D. Phillips And Brother of Salisbury would carry out the project. The contract was one of six the Commission awarded to start its 1930 building program.

A gentleman who had traveled extensively through the south was one evening seated in one of those proverbial grocery stores in a small village talking to the people and commenting upon the unstinted hospitality of the people.

A tall, cadaverous looking chap, who had listened to him intently, interrupted:

"That's so, stranger. When a man comes among we uns and does what's right, we uns ain't the people to see him suffer when he's down on his back an can't help himself. We're just going to raise him up."

And they do "raise him up." If he is sick, they till his ground, feed his cattle, cut his wood and in various ways render him assistance. On the eastern shore of Maryland and Virginia this custom is universal, and many a sick man has silently made his grateful prayers for blessings on his neighbors for the great stacks of chips and split wood that have been gathered about his yard, and for the hams and flour and the other necessaries that have been placed in his smokehouse.- Philadelphia Times.

The Native American heritage was celebrated for the 20th year in Pocomoke City's Cypress Park last weekend. 

 

Now I'm not even sure if the old tale is true or even "politically correct" (in this day) the Indians of any tribe do a Rain Dance.  In any case I'm quite sure there wasn't any type of dance to bring on Saturday's rain - probably one to stop it.  But, word was received that the day went on in spite of Nature's decision to make it inclement for a "pale face" like me.

Sunday brought blue skies and a perfect day to attend a powwow!

Attending a Native American powwow is the best way to learn about the heritage  and culture of such proud Americans.  Such great talent and pride in one area!

Chief Medicine Cat states that he always loves this powwow, because of the "making of new friends and renewing old friendships. Celebrating all the gifts that the Creator and Mother Earth have been generous to bestow upon us. To remember the old ways and to preserve his tribes heritage and traditions". He and the Assateague People can not express enough gratitude to the Citizens and Government of Pocomoke City for all of the support over the last 20 years.

These are humble and gracious people in their setting but not without humor and didn't waste a breath at taking some joking stabs at the pale face!  Me, being the big sissy for not liking rain and for being a pale face probably laughed the hardest!

RICHMOND, Va. – Motorists, who anticipate enjoying the extended time off from work by traveling around the Commonwealth during the holiday weekend, can expect to see an increase in Virginia State Police troopers on the road with them.

 

 

The additional patrols statewide are part of the annual Operation C.A.R.E., (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries associated with speed, failure to wear seatbelts and impaired driving.

 

The state-sponsored, national program encourages law enforcement agencies to increase its visibility and traffic enforcement efforts on major travel holidays.

 

 

As a result, state police will boost patrols around the Commonwealth beginning Friday morning, May 24, 2013, at 12:01 a.m. and continue through midnight, Monday, May 27, 2013.

National Missing Children’s Day on May 25th

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and the 3,083 elected sheriffs nationwide, expressed their strong support for recognizing May 25th as National Missing Children’s Day, as well as support for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) Take 25 Initiative.

 

 

According to the United States Department of Justice, in a year there were an estimated 800,000 children missing, with an average of 2,200 children reported missing to law enforcement agencies daily. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was created as a resource to help find missing children; to help prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation; and assist victims of child abduction and sexual exploitation, their families, and the professionals who serve them. Although the NCEMC’s domestic recovery rate for missing children has grown significantly over the years; there are still too many children who remain among the missing.

As a continuing effort to prevent the abduction and sexual exploitation of children, the National Sheriffs’ Association is an honored partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and its collaborative organizations to recognize May 25, 2011, and May 25th of every year, as National Missing Children’s Day. This special day is a time to remember those children who remain missing and give hope to their families that one day they will be found.

Furthermore, the National Sheriffs’ Association is proud to support NCMEC’s Take 25 Initiative, which encourages parents, educators, and communities to “Take 25” minutes to help children stay safer. Such education and awareness is essential in helping to prevent tragedies, such as child abduction and sexual exploitation, which have unfortunately become all too familiar incidents to law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.

As the chief law enforcement officers in our respective counties and cities, it is the duty of sheriffs nationwide to work to protect the safety and security of all citizens in our communities, particularly our most precious resource – our children. Biggest Lego Model Ever

This 23-Ton, 5.3-Million-Brick X-Wing Is the Biggest Lego Model Ever

The newest addition to the grand list of Coolest Things Ever is being unveiled in New York today: the Lego X-Wing, the largest Lego model ever built.

The model of the classic Star Wars fighter being unveiled in Times Square has a wingspan of 44 feet and comes complete with R2-D2 and a full range of sound effects. It’s a super-duper-sized version of Star Wars Lego starfighter set #9493 and was made with 5,335,200 Lego bricks. That, according to Lego, makes it the largest model ever built, eclipsing the Lego robot at the Mall of America by some 2 million bricks. This replica of the Rebel Alliance dogfighter is 42 times the size of the Lego version we’ve all built and a bit bigger than a real X-Wing. (Yes, yes, we know they’re not real. Just go with it.) The X-Wing Luke Skywalker and his fellow rebels flew was about 41 feet long, 2 feet shorter than this Lego masterpiece.

The X-Wing was built at the Lego Model Shop at the company’s facility in Kladno, Czech Republic. It took 32 “master builders” (Note: This is a real job, and we’re preparing our resumés.) 17,336 man-hours to construct the X-Wing. Plans for the model were created using Lego’s proprietary 3-D design software, and the construction team had to work with a team of structural engineers to ensure that the model was safe, master builder Erik Varszegi told Wired.

“This has been a wild and exciting project for us, and it’s taken an international team of designers, engineers, structural consultants, model builders, and logistics personal over a year to bring this model from a conception to reality,” Varszegi said in an email. “In one respect, designing it was the ‘easy’ part, as we were creating a scaled version of an actual toy construction set.”

Once completed, the model — which weighs 45,980 pounds — was broken down into 34 pieces to be shipped to New York by boat (the voyage took two boats two months to complete). Lest the West Coast feel left out, the starfighter is coming to Legoland California after its tenure in Times Square and will remain there until the end of the year. Twenty-three tons is a whole lot of anything, especially Lego bricks, but much of the model’s weight lies in the model’s steel skeleton, which it needed in order to withstand the vibrations from the subway that runs beneath Duffy Square in Manhattan and any seismic activity it could face in Southern California.

DON’T LET SUMMER FUN BE A DISTRACTION

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – As summer travel begins, the Maryland State Police will be conducting strict enforcement targeting distracted, aggressive and impaired drivers.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Marcus L. Brown has ordered traffic safety initiatives to be conducted throughout the state. Troopers from each of the 22 state police installations will be out working a variety of enforcement programs. These initiatives will include DUI saturation patrols, speed enforcement as well as aggressive and distracted driving. Troopers are joining forces with local law enforcement and the Maryland Highway Safety Office to remind motorists that driving while impaired or distracted is not a good way to start the summer travel season.
“Our enforcement efforts focus on reducing fatalities and protecting the citizens of Maryland,” said Colonel Brown. “We hope motorists realize the dangers involved in distracted and impaired driving, to the point where they modify their driving habits to help protect themselves, their families, and others on the roads.”

Last year in Maryland, there were two fatal collisions on Memorial Day. In both of these crashes, alcohol was a contributing factor.
According to the National Highway Safety Administration, 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver in 2010. An estimated additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. That same year, eleven percent of fatal crashes reported were listed as distraction-affected crashes.

High visibility enforcement is planned on Maryland roads, with a special emphasis on interstates and major highways where the majority of travel will be occurring. Overtime funding for additional patrols will be provided by grants from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.

Coast Guard Oversees Oil Containment Following Boat Sinking

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is responding Thursday to a partially submerged 50-foot recreational boat at the Ocean Marine Yacht Center in Portsmouth.

The Marine Environmental Response Branch from Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads attempted to contact the boat's owner but were unsuccessful.  Due to the possibility of pollution, crews from the Coast Guard Hampton Roads Maritime Incident Response Team and the Portsmouth Fire Department responded to investigate, and as a precautionary measure, deployed containment boom around the boat.  

Due to the inability to establish contact with the boat's owner, the Coast Guard has federalized the response. A federalized response allows the Coast Guard members to utilize the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to assist with clean up efforts. Hepaco Environmental Services has been contracted as the oil spill response organization.

Members of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Transportation have been notified.
