Kenyan Mother Names Twins After Obama and Romney

Reuters Photo
A young Kenyan mother has named her newborn twin sons after the U.S. president-elect and his defeated Republican challenger.

Millicent Owuor, 20, gave birth to Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on Wednesday at the Siaya District Hospital in southwest Kenya, according to the Standard.

Owuor told the Kenyan news outlet her sons' names will always remind her of the election in the United States.

The hospital is near the village of Kogelo, where where President Barack Obama's father was born and where his 90-year-old stepgrandmother, Sarah Obama, resides.

Jubilant residents in Kogelo cheered Obama's victory as results from the United States were reported.
Shouts of "Hail our Kogelo son" and "Obama is coming, open the road for him" rang through the air as locals blew vuvuzela horns in celebration, the Standard reports.

"If Obama did not win, I believe most projects here would stall," Joseph Onyango told the Kenyan media outlet.

Kenyans hope Obama's re-election will harken a fresh start for a U.S. relationship with Kenya, Reuters reports.

Obama visited sub-Saharan Africa just once during his first four years as president—a stop of less than a day in Ghana, according to Reuters.

If Obama does visit Kenya, maybe baby Barack can meet his namesake and baby Mitt meet the U.S. president.

There's no word yet if there have been twins named Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.

VDOT Worked To Clear Roads During Hurricane Sandy

Photo WESR
EASTERN SHORE    During Hurricane Sandy, crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) cleared debris, recovering access to the island town of Saxis and the village of Sanford. The storms sudden tidal surge of nearly 7 feet, which lasted from Sunday, Oct. 28 through Tuesday, Oct. 30, prevented many bayside residents from evacuating.

At that point, recalls Accomack Residency Administrator Chris Isdell, the mission transitioned from one of preparation and response to one of life and safety.

At the request of the Department of Public Safety, VDOT crews navigated their trucks through high water to rescue a family of 6 that was trapped in their Sanford home. Also, while the Chincoteague Causeway was closed Sunday evening, crews from VDOT cleared the way so that emergency response teams could rescue a citizen requiring medical attention. Additionally, VDOT personnel assisted in distribution of emergency supplies throughout the storm.

Among the hardest hit areas of Virginia, Accomack and Northampton Counties endured extensive damage from winds and tidal surges topping 7 feet deep. VDOT crews worked around the clock to recover the roadways from the debris and water that rendered the roads impassable.

All roads in Accomack and Northampton Counties are currently open. VDOT continues to work closely with A&N Electric Cooperative (ANEC) to restore power to the area.

Chief Speaks To Children Out During Hurricane Sandy

Creating A Healing Moment

Sometimes a simple, calm interaction between small children - even young boys- and a police officer (and the Police Chief at that) can form opinions in children about police officers that will last for a very long time. With the waters of the Pocomoke River overflowing into the parking lot at the Laurel Street dock and onto the sidewalk had to be somewhat frightening for the trio.

I'm sure Chief Sewell  turned this into a positive moment for these children.

A Vote For Question 7 Benefits the Eastern Shore

It is time for Marylanders to take care of Marylanders.
Question 7 eliminates the yearly million dollar payments that the Eastern Shore
was required to pay to Baltimore City and Prince George’s County under the
previous gaming bill.

Question 7 provides thousands of new, well paying, private sector jobs to the
Eastern Shore; at the gaming facility, surrounding businesses and in new school
construction jobs.

A Vote FOR Question 7 Benefits the Eastern Shore
www.VoteForSeven.com
Mike
Question 7 will keep our taxes down by steering millions in new gaming revenue
into our Eastern Shore Counties. This is critical, given the million dollar unfunded
mandates placed on our Counties by the State.
Question 7 provides a guaranteed funding source for school construction —
bringing more jobs and better schools to the Eastern Shore.

Pennsylvania, which began gaming the same year as Maryland, received $1.5
billion per year in tax revenue while Maryland lost money.

Question 7 will allow us to get it right. — to make Maryland a leader and not a
follower.

Question 7 will stop the exodus of $550 million dollars in gaming money that
leaves Maryland each and every year to surrounding states.

MIchael Steele Former Maryland Lt. Governor Former Chairman, Maryland Republican Party
Former Chairman, Republican National Committee

Ten years ago, when gaming (slots) was first introduced to the State by
Governor Bob Ehrlich, we were both enthusiastic supporters, as were
most Republicans. After years of back and forth, the Maryland Legislature
in 2007 passed a slots bill, which was then ratified by the voters in 2008
(passing in every Republican jurisdiction in the State).

Unfortunately, the 2007 legislation was hastily put together. It put our
gaming industry at a decided disadvantage to surrounding states. To put
this in perspective, Pennsylvania, which began gaming the same year as
Maryland, received $1.5 billion per year in tax revenue while Maryland lost
money.

Maryland Republicans supported bringing gaming to Maryland. But, as
many of you have said, "if we are going to have gaming in Maryland, we
should do it right." Well, we agree.

West Virginia casino interests are spendingupwards of $40 million to defeat Question 7.

Ballot Questions and Referendums 2012

Ballot Questions and Referendums 2012
By Delegate Mike McDermott

I have been contacted by many individuals during the past few weeks regarding balloting
questions and referendums. Here is a summary of those questions and my commentary:

1. Orphan’s Court-Prince George’s County...
Would require Orphans Court Judgesin Prince Georges County to be members of the Maryland Bar (attorneys). This is
specific to Prince Georges County
and requested by their delegation members. Allof their current Orphan Court Judges are already attorneys and it was expressed that
an Orphans Court Judge (who is an attorney) can conduct certain hearings without the
need for other judges which saves time and energy. I will be voting "Yes".

2. Orphan’s Court-Baltimore County...Would require Orphans Court Judges in Baltimore
County to be members of the Maryland Bar (attorneys). This is specific to Baltimore
County
and requested by their delegation members. All of their current Orphan CourtJudges are already attorneys and it was expressed that an Orphans Court Judge (who is
an attorney) can conduct certain hearings without the need for other judges which saves
time and energy. I will be voting "Yes".

3. Removal of Elected Officials...
Would prevent corrupt elected officials convicted of acrime from profiting from their elected office and would remove them from office. It is
long overdue. I will be voting "Yes".

4. Benefits for Illegal Immigrants...
Would allow illegal immigrants to receive In-Statetuition rates at Maryland State Colleges and Universities if they attended Maryland
Public Schools. Montgomery County opted to provide this type of tuition rate at their
local community college and it has cost them millions in tax dollars. Since those
receiving the break would be counted against the Out-of-State tuition numbers, this
would result in budget shortfalls as we count on those out of state students to subsidize
the cost for our resident students. We should not reward illegal behavior at the taxpayers
expense. I will be voting "No".

5. Gerrymandered Redistricting...
Would approve the Redistricting Maps drawn up bythe governor and his committee. These Congressional maps represent some of the
worst gerrymandering in the country and will make it a real challenge to elect more
conservatives to congress. We need to have these maps redrawn by the courts. I will be
voting "No".

6. Gay and Lesbian Marriage...
Would change the definition of marriage in Marylandto include homosexual marriage. Marriage between one man and one woman is a
foundation stone of our society and should not be changed. "I will be voting "No".

7. Expanded Gaming...
Would expand gaming in Maryland to include table games andwould add a sixth casino site at National Harbor in Prince Georges County. It alters the
tax on casinos(currently the highest in the country) and provides $300 million in school
construction funds. The bill also allows Veteran organizations across Maryland to have
up to 5 non-profit slot machines with the proceeds directed to our Veterans. Locally, it
will also stop the flow of over $2 million dollars currently paid out to Baltimore City and
Prince Georges County from local impact fees at Ocean Downs. This money would stay
on the Eastern Shore for our local government needs. There will be over a thousand
jobs involved in construction projects related to the expansion and a billion dollar
investment in Maryland. It will also create hundreds of other good paying jobs at each
casino and keep Maryland money in Maryland. West Virginia and Delaware have filled
out mailboxes and spent tens of millions trying to discourage us from approving this bill.
This is not about gaming in Maryland, it is about the business of gaming. For this reason
along with the vast local benefits, I will be voting "Yes".

Hurricane Recovery on the Eastern Shore ~ Message From Rep. Scott Rigell

Dear Friend,
Over the past week, I have been encouraged by Hampton Roads’ preparation for – and recovery from – the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Local, state, and federal government officials worked together, alongside the volunteer work of charitable organizations, to ensure that our region was prepared for the storm and had the necessary resources to clean up and restore our communities.

Preparation efforts on the Eastern Shore were also comprehensive and well-coordinated.  However, Sandy was an extremely powerful storm and I remain concerned about the ongoing recovery for our friends and neighbors in this area. These communities have experienced significant property damage and some families have lost many of their belongings and valuables. On Friday, I observed the storm’s impact first-hand in the towns of Chincoteague and Saxis. Photos can be found on my Facebook page here.

In Chincoteague, Saxis, and other communities, winds and storm surges caused trees to fall and homes to flood. After speaking with local officials and citizens, it is clear the devastation they have experienced. At the same time, I am amazed at their resilience and the willingness of neighbors to step up and help one another in their time of need. This is truly the American spirit on display.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those on the Eastern Shore – and our fellow Americans on the East Coast – as they continue to recover from this devastating hurricane. My office is working with state and local officials to ensure a quick and efficient recovery in the 2nd district.

We are also here to assist you in helping to access relief and recovery services. Please contact us at 757-789-5172 (Eastern Shore) or at 757-687-8290 (Virginia Beach) if we can help in any way.

TIME MACHINE ... An 1834 Heartfelt Appeal From Snow Hill.

(Reader-friendly viewing of newspaper archives material)

December, 1834

(The Mail- Hagers-Town, Md) (spelling correct from this era)

TO THE PEOPLE OF MARYLAND

Fellow Citizens:- The people of Snow Hill have made it our duty to address in behalf of the sorely scourged inhabitants of their unfortunate Village.

The public press will have already apprised many of you that in the night of the 24th ult. (ult.- in or of the month preceding the present one) a considerable portion of the Town, the center of its business, its most valuable section, was consumed by fire.- It's hotels, its public offices, and all, save two, of its houses of merchandise are in ashes. Notwithstanding 100 acres of land are included by its limits, little of the hum of business can now be heard within them, and few and far between, are the shops of its handicraftsmen. If we seek the houses in which but a few days since, cheerful labor earned honest bread or those who heretofore supplied the town and its neighborhood, with the necessities, the comforts and elegancies of life, heaps of ashes tell all the tale. Instead of the industry, the commercial prosperity, the domestic happiness, to be seen two weeks ago, we now gaze upon solitary chimneys and ruined walls. It looks as though the curse of the Almighty had descended in fire. That awful agent has consumed more than ninety houses, of which seventeen were dwelling houses, and has been extinguished forever in fifty-six chimneys.

Where are the men, women and children who lately thronged the site of these ruins, and were then prosperous and happy? Some are sheltered, clothed and fed by charity. Some, whose circumstances two weeks since, were comfortable, must begin the labors of life afresh; younger persons mourn over blighted prospects- older ones, that the results of a life of toil, were consumed in one hour.

Not for ourselves, but for others, would we excite your sympathies fellow-citizens, we would not exaggerate, nor give a single color of the picture, for the accuracy of which our community would not vouch.- We can not estimate our loss in dollars and cents; but in proportion to the whole value of property in the Village, the loss is enormous. We leave you with a statement of simple facts.

The residences, the food, the clothes of children and parents, of young and old, of males and females; the goods of merchants in large amounts of value; the libraries and offices of professional men; the shops, the tools, the working materials of mechanics, are gone forever. Without the aid of our fellow citizens, Snow Hill must continue a heap of ruins, more painful to the eye of the beholder, than any similar sight in Maryland or perhaps in the United States.

We cannot conclude this paper without alluding in this public way, to a City of a sister State. In glowing terms, for our hearts indite them, we would thank Philadelphia for what she had done for us.- The prompt and generous manner in which she has come to our relief, would alone entitle her to her very significant name.

By the order of the Committee appointed by the people of Snow Hill to solicit, and receive for, and distribute to the sufferers by the late fire at that place, donations which may be received from abroad.

TEN NEW SIRENS BLOW AT WORCESTER POSTS

Berlin, June 29.- John I. Timmons, senior air raid warden for Worcester County, yesterday announced that ten new air raid alarm sirens have been purchased by the Worcester County Board Of Commissioners for county towns.

Four of the new sirens have been received and erected in Whaleysville, Newark, Girdletree and Stockton, Timmons said. The other six will be placed in Ocean City, Berlin, Snow Hill and Pocomoke City, with Berlin and Snow Hill receiving two alarms each.

A Town Overrun by Burglars

Princess Anne, Md., June 1.- A successful entrance was made into the store of P.M. Smith, dealer in ready-made clothing and notions on Main Street, this place, some time Sunday night by a burglar, who carried off shirts, collars and clothing, the amount which can not be ascertained. The thief also carried off about 25 cents in money and 75 cents in postage stamps. The entrance was made by boring around the lock on the front door. Many attempts of the same kind have been made to break into private houses of late, and public indignation is effectually aroused. A vigilance committee will be formed to patrol the town at night for the protection of its citizens and property.

Wasps Broke Up Revival

The falling of a wasp nest in the Methodist church at Remsennes, near Greenbackville on the Virginia-Maryland line in Accomac County, Va., one night recently caused a panic and broke up a revival in progress. The nest fell from the ceiling into the center of the congregation, from which point hundreds of insects swarmed all over the church, stinging many persons. Rev. J.F. Anderson was forced to vacate the pulpit by way of a window, and the services were abruptly closed, the wasps being left in possession of the church.
