My grandfather attended McMaster one-room school on what is now Brantley Road. He often told the story of the day the local superintendent came to visit. While the superintendent was visiting with the teacher some of the boys snuck outside to inspect his Model T Ford which was something not seen much in those parts.

My grandfather had been squirrel hunting before school that morning and still had a 12 gauge shell in his pocket. He managed to unscrew one of the spark plugs and poured some of the gunpowder into the cylinder and replaced the spark plug.

The superintendent eventually ended his visit and climbed into his horseless carriage. When he stepped on the starter button (there was no such thing as car keys at that time) the engine exploded and blew the engine cover up into a nearby pine tree. Much confusion ensued and eventually Ford Motor Company was contacted and, because nothing like this had ever happened before, they sent a team of mechanics and engineers to see what had happened. The team never solved the mystery but it did result in Ford replacing the superintendent's Model T with a brand new one.

Removing hundred-year-old Pocomoke Forest trees considered

 (WMDT)

POCOMOKE STATE FOREST, Md. – The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is considering cutting down 436 acres of trees in the Pocomoke State Forest. This is a normal operation that they say helps preserve forest life.

But the Old Growth Forest Network says the problem is that 120 of those acres are old-growth trees nearly 100 years old. Executive Director Joan Maloof says old-growth trees can often grow for hundreds of years, and help protect younger plants and the animals that live there.

"Blended Learning Program" launches next fall in Worcester County

May 25, 2021 - Blended Learning Program Announcement

Posted on 05/25/2021
Robocall Transcript

Good evening, families, this is your Superintendent Lou Taylor. As you may have heard over the past months, Maryland school districts are developing a virtual learning option for the 2021-2022 school year.

With the lessons learned both from distance learning this year and Continuity of Learning last year, I want to announce today that Worcester County Public Schools is launching the Blended Learning Program beginning this fall. This full-year blended program is very different from the distance learning that students have experienced this school year – particularly in terms of the amount of screen time required, so I want to ensure that any families interested in pursuing this option have the opportunity to review exactly what this program entails.

Earlier today, we launched an informational page on our website, www.worcesterk12.org , that has several documents for families to review including a family guide with sample schedules and course offerings, the year-long agreement, and of course, the enrollment application. As you consider enrollment in the Blended Learning Program, I encourage you to reach out to your school counselor or principal when deciding if this option is the right one for your child. We are always happy to help answer any questions you may have, as we all want your child to be successful next school year.

Again, please visit our website, www.worcesterk12.org , to review all the information on the new Blended Learning Program, and keep an eye on our social media as we announce live virtual information sessions where we will have our staff available to go over the program details and answer your questions live.
