RockOn sounding rocket successfully launches from Wallops - Shore Daily News

The RockOn! sounding rocket launch has been rescheduled for Thursday, Aug. 17, with a window of 6-10 a.m. EDT.

The mission had been postponed following an anomaly that occurred on the RockSat-X student sounding rocket launch on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Initial investigation shows that there was an issue with the RockSat-X second stage that led to the payload falling back down within the established hazard area. Teams are working on recovery of the payload and motor. The RockOn launch vehicle uses a different second stage, which has been cleared for flight.

The Wallops Visitor Center will open its gates at 5 a.m. for launch viewing. The live stream will begin 15 minutes before scheduled launch time.

UPDATED: Two Wallops Launches set for Wednesday morning

Wednesday, 8/15/23:

The first rocket went off as scheduled on time, but the second was scrubbed due to what NASA called “an anomaly” this morning at the Wallops Flight Facility.

According to NASA, the anomaly occurred with the RockSat-X sounding rocket launch, the first rocket which shot off at 6:21 AM. NASA Range, safety and Sounding Rocket experts are investigating the cause of the anomaly.

Backup launch days are Aug. 16 through 18. No new launch date for the second launch has been set.

The rockets carried experiments developed by more than 30 university and community college teams as part of NASA’s RockOn Workshop and RockSat programs. Fifty percent of the RockOn teams are from minority serving institutions.

LONG AGO BUT NOT FAR AWAY- THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF OUR SOUTHERN PENINSULA 

From a 1951 feature article in the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot.  The author, Leonora W. Wood, (1892-1989) wrote articles of regional historic interest for Virginia newspapers and authored "Guide To Virginia's Eastern Shore" in 1952.  She was an inspiration for the novel "Christy" written by her daughter Catherine Marshall, a well-known author.  Mrs. Wood's husband was a minister who had served Holmes Presbyterian Church in Cheriton.

World's largest rubber duck visits Crisfield

CRISFIELD, MD - Visitors and locals are flocking to Crisfield as the world's largest duck has finally waddled its way there for the weekend. The giant duck, which stands 6 stories tall and weighs 15 tons, will be inflated in the Somers Cove Marina until Sunday, August 13th.

Town Officials hope the giant duck will give a boost to local business and put the small town on the map.

Crowds have already filled Somers Cove Marina with vendors ready for a busy day. Coastal Creations Vendor Helen Young says she barely had time to get out of the car.

“People came early, and I was running the car so I was selling literally as I got out of the car. Business has been great and it’s gonna be a great weekend." said Young. 

Gianna Luzier, who lives outside Philadelphia and came to see duck says Crisfield wasn’t even in her vocabulary

“I’ve never heard of this town at all, we only came to see the duck, to be honest.” said Luzier.

Heather Ross, the coordinator for Crisfield Arts and Entertainment says the event is already proving itself as a success, and that Crisfield is open for business for future attractions.

“I would love to coordinate any type of event, so if there's an event you’d like to have here in Crisfield at anytime, we are always looking for things to do here in Crisfield.” said Ross. 

One quaky spirit bringing a small town to life.
