We asked... (an older Pocomoke City bridge?)
Prior to the construction of the drawbridge at Market Street was there another bridge into Pocomoke City?
Yes, before the current drawbridge at Market Street was built in 1920, an earlier wooden drawbridge was used to cross the Pocomoke River.
- Wooden drawbridge: This earlier bridge was completed in 1865 near the site of Stevens Ferry. During World War I, when it was closed for repairs, a ferry was used to cross the river. It was later removed after the Market Street drawbridge was finished.
- Market Street drawbridge: The current double-leaf bascule bridge, also known as the Old Pocomoke River Bridge, was constructed in 1920. It was designed to accommodate increased automobile traffic and replaced the old wooden bridge.
- Iron railroad bridge: An iron railroad bridge was also erected in 1880, providing another river crossing for rail service. This bridge still exists today.
