And this, my friends, is why we need in-person learning, or at least lessons in spelling.

tk for PPE says: Good point and good catch. Spelling error now corrected but don't blame the Board Of Ed. The error occurred in the process of copying the line from their website and the word was partially erased and I retyped it. But I'll own up to deserving a grade of "F" for the oversight.

CITY OF POCOMOKE CITY, MARYLAND

A Municipal Election will be held at the Pocomoke Library at 301 Market St, Pocomoke City, Maryland 21851 on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, to elect a candidate for the Mayoral seat. The District 3 candidate will run unopposed and voting is not necessary. The term of office will be for three years beginning on the third Tuesday in August 2020.  The polls will be open from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on election day. Absentee ballots are available by first contacting the City Clerk at City Hall at 410-957-1333. Absentee ballots must be mailed by the voter no later than Friday, August 07, 2020, to be received on Monday, August 10, 2020, at 4:30 P.M. deadline and mailed to: Pocomoke City Board of Elections, PO Box 233, Pocomoke City, MD 21851

Has the Council changed the City Charter? The Charter states, "The newly elected Mayor shall take office on the Second Tuesday of April following his election."

Unless the Council changes the Charter Susan or Jackie or Mike will have to wait a long time to legally take office.

Any Guesses? UPDATED

This picture is from a 1953 Salisbury Times sports page item. Under the picture it read: "HE DID IT.  (name) drove in the winning run yesterday as Crisfield defeated Pocomoke City 1-0 and created a first place Central Shore League tie."

Who was it? CLUE: This Crisfield native was a popular figure on local television for almost 30 years starting in 1975.  It wasn't baseball that he covered but a favorite outdoor activity on the Eastern Shore was the subject of his reports. In later years he also reported on other features of interest from around Delmarva.

Summer Concert Series

TIME MACHINE: 1921, 2011, 1977, 2000.

The Pocomoke City landmark building that's now home to The Delmarva Discovery Center made its appearance 99 years ago when J. Milton Clogg opened a modern Ford dealership at this location. In later decades it was the Duncan Brothers General Motors Dealership that senior residents of our area remember.

Cloggs Garage eventually was purchased by, and was renamed, Duncan Brothers. Winnie Williams and Toby Hallett came to town in the early '60s and wanted to buy the business. Lynwood Duncan hemmed and hawed and didn't really want to sell but finally he said to Winnie, " I we aren't going to have another big war anytime soon so I guess you can buy it."

Eventually the building was abandoned and was acquired by the the group that wanted to establish the Discovery Center. Barbara Tull appeared before the city council and asked for a grant of $25,000 to repair the roof. Councilman Joe Jackson exclaimed, "Hell, the whole building isn't worth $25,000!"

Derek Jeter of the Yankees hits a first inning double in the 2000 All Star game at Turner Field in Atlanta. The American League won the game 6 to 3. Jeter was MVP.

I tuned in briefly Saturday to take a view of major league baseball which to the credit of owners, managers, and team members has found a way to get started under difficult Covid-19 precautions. However, I find the cardboard cut-outs of fans in the stands and the piped in crowd noise an insult to the integrity of the game. This is not WWE wrestling entertainment, it's a legitimate sporting event. We're big girls and boys MLB and we understand why restrictions are required at this time. Those of us who are interested in the game will accept watching it played under the conditions that exist. Drop the gimmicks.

Pocomoke Boat Docking Challenge Cancelled for 2020

Due to COVID-19 we regret to inform you that the 2020 Pocomoke Boat Docking has been cancelled for this year. We waited as long as we could for hope that things would change but they have not. With following the CDC and the health departments guidelines we feel that we can not ensure the safety of not only our committee members or the work staff but we can not of the more than 1500 people that attend our great event. As we look forward into 2021, we hope to bring you a bigger and even greater experience here in Pocomoke. So please check back on our website www.pocomokeboatdocking.com or like our page on Facebook (Pocomoke Boat Docking Challenge) to get up to date information on next years event. House of dreams finally completed after years of devoted work

Years ago, it was a peculiar sight from Mount Vernon Road, west of Princess Anne. Across a field of early autumn’s golden weeds, near the edge of the woods, sat a two-story wooden house with an end of brick. It was distinctive with its patterned wall of red and blue bricks and massive chimney.

The field is gone now, replaced by trees. The house remains, hidden from view.

It looks like a structure from the early 1700s. It was a house of dreams, a house unlike any other on the Eastern Shore. All of the woodwork, from the foundation up, was custom made by the man who also laid the thousands of bricks on each end of the house.

Accomack Fall School Plan Announced.

ACCOMACK COUNTY PARENTS CAN KEEP STUDENTS HOME THIS FALL

The Accomack County School System took a survey of parents before adopting the plan for opening the schools this fall.  At the K through 9 level 1237 returned the surveys.  When asked how comfortable they felt letting their children return to school,  557 indicated they were not comfortable,  428 said they were  comfortable but had some concerns and 252 said they were comfortable with no concerns.   At the middle school level 374 responded that they were not comfortable,  358 said they were comfortable but with some concerns and 215 said they were comfortable with no concerns.   At the high school level, 392 said they were not comfortable, 393 said they were comfortable with concerns and 260 said they were comfortable with no concerns.

The plan allows parents to choose whether their children return to the classroom  two days a week or participate in the Virtual Virginia online learning management system.  Those using the Virtual Virginia service will have to commit to an entire semester.   While they may receive some classes from local teachers, the majority of the instruction will be handled by Virtual Virginia teachers.

Virtual Virginia will include Zoom and Google Meet uploads, digital components from the Accomack County School System core programs, and instructional packets will be provided to grades K-8 by request.  High school students will have to have a reliable internet connection to take the classes.

The school system is planning to provide hot spots in the parking lots of all of the county public schools.  It is also working with the Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce to provide a hot spot at the Chamber office in Melfa and to compile a list of other local businesses providing that service.

Wednesday's Covid-19 comments from Governor Hogan

ANNAPOLIS (WBOC/CBS)- All students and staff will be required to wear face coverings if and when Maryland schools reopen, Gov. Larry Hogan and State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon said Wednesday. 

At a press conference in Annapolis, Hogan and Salmon said that while they know people are anxious for a decision on reopening schools, they want to get it right rather than rushing.

Online learning sounds great until you really think about it. I have grandchildren in another school district and their mother had the following conversation with the school board.

Mother: Do you expect my children to sit in front of a computer monitor for seven hours a day?

School board: No. There will be regular breaks for bathroom time, lunch and recess. Your child will only be in front of the computer for about five hours per day.

Mother: But I have three children. How is that going to work?

School board: You will have to purchase two additional computers. Each student must have their own computer and monitor.

Mother: But we live in a rural area with questionable broadband service. I doubt that our internet service provider can provide enough bandwidth. And, by the way, what happens to the board's server when all these students log on at the same time? Will your server crash?

School board: We didn't think about that.
