Wallops launch

A Terrier-Improved Malemute sounding rocket carrying the VIPER experiment launched Wednesday night at the Wallops Flight Facility.  This time, the sounding rocket went off on schedule on the first attempt.  The mission will study very low frequency waves produced by both natural or artificial means in Earth”s ionosphere.

Removing hundred-year-old Pocomoke Forest trees considered

POCOMOKE STATE FOREST, Md. – The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is considering cutting down 436 acres of trees in the Pocomoke State Forest. This is a normal operation that they say helps preserve forest life.

But the Old Growth Forest Network says the problem is that 120 of those acres are old-growth trees nearly 100 years old. Executive Director Joan Maloof says old-growth trees can often grow for hundreds of years, and help protect younger plants and the animals that live there.

If you want to eat you plant corn, potatoes or other vegetables. If you want houses you plant trees. The only difference is the length of time to get the final product. Trees are just as renewable as any other cash crop.

Good evening, families, this is your Superintendent Lou Taylor. As you may have heard over the past months, Maryland school districts are developing a virtual learning option for the 2021-2022 school year. 

With the lessons learned both from distance learning this year and Continuity of Learning last year, I want to announce today that Worcester County Public Schools is launching the Blended Learning Program beginning this fall. This full-year blended program is very different from the distance learning that students have experienced this school year – particularly in terms of the amount of screen time required, so I want to ensure that any families interested in pursuing this option have the opportunity to review exactly what this program entails. 

Earlier today, we launched an informational page on our website, www.worcesterk12.org , that has several documents for families to review including a family guide with sample schedules and course offerings, the year-long agreement, and of course, the enrollment application. As you consider enrollment in the Blended Learning Program, I encourage you to reach out to your school counselor or principal when deciding if this option is the right one for your child. We are always happy to help answer any questions you may have, as we all want your child to be successful next school year.

Worcester County Recreation and Parks is excited to announce another Fishing Derby. This event will take place at Newtown Park pond on Saturday, May 29, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Participants ages 15 and under are invited to grab their bait and fishing rods and join us.

This event is free to all participants. Families are asked to register online at www.playmarylandscoast.org. Trophies and awards will also be awarded to the winners after the event. Lunch will also be provided at 11:30 a.m.

A parent or guardian should be present to help their child with a fun day of fishing.

Share the Road Safely During Community Bike Rides 

The Worcester County Bike and Pedestrian Coalition will hold the last of 3 community bike rides to celebrate National Bike Month in Pocomoke City on Saturday, May 22 beginning at 12 noon. The six mile loop will begin and end at Newtowne Park.  Experienced riders with helmets are invited to join the free event.  There will also be a ride in the park for younger children.  For more information or to register email: sholland@pocomokemd.com

With the return of warmer weather, beach visitors, and increased number of public 

events, more people will be walking and biking along trails and roadways.  The Coalition reminds drivers, bikers, and pedestrians to follow guidance from Maryland Department of Transportation to  BE STREETWISE every day.

Motorists:

Look for people walking and cycling, especially at intersections.  

Yield to bicyclists when turning. 

Allow 3 feet of room when passing bicyclists. It’s the law in Maryland!

Watch for approaching bikes before opening your car door. 

Maintain full attention when driving to avoid distracted driving. 

Bicyclists: 

Ride with the traffic on the right side of the road.

Stop at all red lights and stop signs. 

Use hand signals when turning and audible alerts when passing. 

           Stay visible with reflectors and bright clothing.

U.S. Space Force planning for Wallops launch in mid-June

A Northrop Grumman Minotaur 1 rocket for the United States Space Force (USSF) is being readied at Wallops. It will carry a national security payload for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The launch is scheduled for June 15th.

UPDATE (Saturday, May 15): NASA has scrubbed Saturday night’s rocket launch because of cloud cover in Bermuda. The agency said it will make one final launch attempt Sunday night, May 16. Saturday was the seventh delay of the rocket launch, with most of the delays related to unfavorable weather conditions.

LAUNCH SCRUBBED ❗ Tonight's (Saturday) launch of the Black Brant XII rocket for the KiNET-X mission has been scrubbed due to cloudy skies in Bermuda. The next launch opportunity will be no earlier than May 16, at 8:04 p.m. EDT. This will be the last launch opportunity for our mission.

Let's see.....I had Sarah Dallas for first grade, Julia Robertson for second, Violet Chesser for fourth and Annie Ross for principal. Miss Ross, by the way, was a very strong Orioles fan.

tkforppe says: I had Sarah Dallas for first grade. There was a fire in that old school building that year (1948-1949) and we were off school for a while. Julia Robertson was my teacher in third grade although she apparently taught second grade during most of her career. Incidentally, my  second grade teacher was Miss Mary Moore at the start of the school year and she became Mrs. Klein Leister during that school year.
