As a result of the increasing incidents of drinking and driving, the Pocomoke City Police Department applied for, and was granted Temporary Traffic Control Application to conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint. The "Sobriety Checkpoint" is the most effective method of deleting and apprehending impaired operators.
A review of records has shown that the use of alcohol by individuals who operate motor vehicles has resulted in an alarming number of deaths and personal injury accidents. Most recently a pedestrian was killed by a drunk driver in the area. Therefore, in an effort to maintain safe roads in Pocomoke City, the Pocomoke City Police conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint S/B Route 13 South of Old
Virginia Road on March 16, 2013
The Pocomoke City Police Officers brought a total of 213 motor vehicles into the sobriety checkpoint with the following results:
1 arrest for Driving While Intoxicated
1 arrest for Driving on a Suspended License
1 arrest for Driving on a Suspended License

A success rate of 0.5%. Probably could have done better by just cruising up and down Rt. 13.

Better than not at all which has been the way of the past. I say kudos to all of them. At least the department is getting things done.
Slim every year law enforcement across the country participate in the Check Point Sobriety strike force. this is the first time Pocomoke Police participated in this. The last Chief did not participated in anything. This new Chief is moving the Police department in the right direction. I say this is a start and they did get one drunk driver off the streets. I call that a success.

Pocomoke is seeing for the first time a police department that is all about the city and its people. And according to the majority of people I have spoken to which are residents and nonresidents they notice!
I'm thinking that the announcement of this checkpoint may have prevented some people from driving while drunk and even relying on a designated driver. A serious accident or maybe a fatal may have been averted.
The announcement that there was gonna be a checkpoint, I'm pretty positive, reduced alcohol consumption on that that Saturday night. It did acheive the desired goal which can't be measured by tickets written, but instead by behavior modification.
Alcohol consumption, if anything, was dramatically INCREASED on Saturday night because of the Bull Ride party at the local Elks. More alcohol is consumed at this annual party than any two New Years put together.
