Pocomoke City Police Department Sobriety Checkpoint

POCOMOKE CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE

ST. PATRICKS DAY
SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT

Date:                        March 18, 2013
Authorized by:        Chief Kelvin Sewell
Command:               Lt. Lynell Green
Checkpoint Mgr.     Officer Damien McGlotten

As a result of the increasing incidents of drinking and driving, the Pocomoke City Police Department applied for, and was granted Temporary Traffic Control Application to conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint.  The "Sobriety Checkpoint" is the most effective method of deleting and apprehending impaired operators.

A review of records has shown that the use of alcohol by individuals who operate motor vehicles has resulted in an alarming number of deaths and personal injury accidents.  Most recently a pedestrian was killed by a drunk driver in the area.  Therefore, in an effort to maintain safe roads in Pocomoke City, the Pocomoke City Police conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint S/B Route 13 South of Old
Virginia Road on March 16, 2013

The Pocomoke City Police Officers brought a total of 213 motor vehicles into the sobriety checkpoint with the following results:

1 arrest for Driving While Intoxicated
1 arrest
for Driving on a Suspended License

Pocomoke City Police Dept. ~ Links To Photos

OH, Happy Day!! The Pocomoke City Police Department is now totally working from their new facility on Market Street!! (oh, this brings happy tears to my eyes)

And to think all these photos I've taken through the months of the renovations taking place were because my husbands support and because of a Christmas gift from my husband. No, not my brand new camera but a signed copy of the book "Why Do We Kill?" ( written by former Baltimore Homicide Detective Kelvin Sewell, now Chief of Police for Pocomoke City, and Stephen Janis)

The fact that I was able to carry out my plans in providing the public with photos as the renovations progressed is to due my very dear friend Councilman Malloy....he knew I was on a mission and even through my stupid mistakes, has laughed at me.

I am very excited for Chief of Police Kelvin Sewell and his department and for the city of Pocomoke.

Listed below are links to photos I have taken along the way..... and there are so many more that I did not post. I hope they work.

MOVING.....The Pocomoke City Police Department

Oh, who said the landscaping wouldn't be ready?? It's only Tuesday and you can be sure the front of the new Pocomoke Police Department location will be completed! Compared to the extreme work inside this is a piece of cake - unless you are the person in charge of all the back breaking planting.

I hope many of you will be able to drop by and see for yourselves how amazing the inside of the new station looks. I took my first photo here on January 20, 2012 and have followed the progress at two week intervals ever since (hit or miss a few)

Congratulations to Chief Sewell and his department. What a welcomed relief to walk into your work place and find it bright, spacious and all on one floor. Personally, I can not remember another time in Pocomoke City history that this new headquarters could be more needed or deserved.

Thank you to each and everyone in the Pocomoke Police Department for your kindness. You just can't imagine how I am looking forward to seeing all of your in your new offices.

Finishing Touches Being Put On the Pocomoke City Police Department

Pocomoke City Police Station
~Almost Completed~
Thursday  April 12, 2012

It had only been 7 days since I last visited what would be the new Pocomoke City police station to take photos.  But while I was in Pocomoke Councilman Malloy and I decided we really should get another peek....actually, it was my idea, I guess,  since I am so nosey.

WOW!!  What a difference just a few days makes!
Have you ever watched paint dry?  Watching floor wax dry is just about as exciting but with people you like, who engage in good conversation it isn't bad at all.  That 20 minute wait flew by in no time...Worth the wait.

Thank you Mike Brady, of Peninsula Floor Service, for allowing us to walk across your newly waxed floor.
What a shine!  You may need your sun glasses...I'm not kidding. What was once dull gray tile  only a few days ago has enough shine now to see your reflection!

(below) Do you know what this is?

"The Box" "It's where we question both  witnesses and suspects....An OK Corral with a table and a couple of chairs." ( Words of Kelvin Sewell taken from his book  "Why Do We Kill?")  Now, Darren  has enlightened me in so many ways concerning  what has taken place in this soon to be police station.  The discussion about this room:  I say TWO chairs- because I read the book.  He says could be THREE chairs- depending on who is in "the box" at the time of interrogation. (He hasn't had time to read the book - he's been here!)

So, I thought about it.  I looked the paragraph up in Chief Sewell's book when I got home.  Okay, Darren.  You win.  A couple could mean two or more- so I'll give you the three.  (But how odd was it when I opened the book and found that I had marked that page with an expired monthly GO PASS from the Baltimore MTA).  Here is how I feel about that room........I will NEVER sit there to be interrogated!  The only table I EVER intend to be seated at is a table that is surrounded by my  friends and family  waiting to partake in a meal!

All cells are completed.  The beds have been bolted to the floor, cots put in place and ready for occupancy really soon.  This is the female holding cell....NO bling!

So, on this trip everything seemed to be just about wrapped up and ready for the "white glove" test.  Restrooms and showers have been cleaned.  And I'm sure by this writing the floors have been buffed. (What if I told you I left my toe print in a corner in that building?)

Anyway, I was able to show the police chief a photo of the shiny floors....(I like to always be first). But it made his day and when I left that day he made sure I had my cell phone. (For those that don't remember: the first time Chief Sewell and I met I accidently left my cell phone in his office.  Embarrassed?  ME?  Hell, yes!)

But anyway, the Second Street police department that so many of us have known for many years....the walkway that my son, as a small boy,  would ride his bike up and coast down when he could get away with it will soon be history.  I never realized it until I walked down the stairway and out those black doors that I never go photos of the inside...the stairway...

But here is what I want you to do when you visit the new police station.  Please take full advantage of your reflection in the windows on the end of the building.  Take time to fix you hair and straighten your cap so you look nice when walking inside.  And once inside WIPE YOUR FEET!

Thanks Councilman Malloy, Chief Sewell, Mike Brady and assistant and of course "the go to man" Darren.

What's New With The "New" Police Department- Pocomoke City

In May of 2011 the Pocomoke City Mayor and Council took steps in purchasing the former Delmarva Auto Collision building to be the new home for the Pocomoke City Police Department.

Councilman Malloy and I traveled to the  opposite end of Market Street so I could see first hand what was going on inside to prepare for this big move the police department will be making in just a few months.

The Pocomoke City Police Department is currently located on Second Street, in the former National Guard Armory,  where it has been for many years and I can only remember one other possibility of it ever being anywhere else and that was on Willow Street.... but that's a maybe.

Anyway, the new facility is large and certainly seems to have ample space for the offices  that are needed to operate a police department.  Plus, it has to be more energy efficient and will certainly have better parking!

A Beauchamp Construction crew was  busy working when we stopped by.  Quite hard to tell the ins and outs of the whole facility right now but this is going to such a wonderful improvement over the conditions of the current police department.  Wall board has been put up and wiring has been run with still a ways to go but certainly won't take much longer.

Energy efficient and brand new on the inside,  the new Pocomoke City Police Department  headquarters will be something Pocomoke  City can be proud of......Just as proud as they are of their Police Department.

Keen Eyes and Cameras Help Nab Deshield

Believe that the cameras placed around Pocomoke don't work, aren't helpful and don't get used if you want to but they DO work.

The keen eye of a Pocomoke fire/emergency person, seeing smoke as they traveled  over the Pocomoke City bridge downtown early on Sunday, August 21, 2011 aided in keeping the fires set in Pocomoke's Cypress Park  to  a minimum.

The alarm sounded around 6:46 am with the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company arriving just minutes later.

Rodney Sharpley from the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office determined that the fires set in the restrooms, a park pavilion and at the children's playground was a result of arson.

The cameras, positioned in the park, were viewed immediatly and the person seen leaving the park was recognized by one of the Pocomoke City police officers. The subject was taken to the Pocomoke City police station for questioning and arrested.

Arrested was Anthony Deshield of Pocomoke City.   Deshield was charged with 2nd Deg. Arson, 2nd Deg. Malicious Burning and Malicious Destruction of property of another.

It was determined that Deshield did not use any type of flammable materials or excellerants in starting the fires. He has been denied bond.
