I remember the very first Super Bowl, although it wasn't called that at the time. It was just the AFL-NFL Football Championship or something like that. The name "Super Bowl" didn't come along until about 1970 or 1971. The NFL had been around for a long time and when the American Football League was formed everybody thought it was just a bunch of rejects, loafers and pretenders.
The AFL, in fact, used a different football than the NFL. The AFL ball was thinner and more pointed. In the first three championship games there were two separate pools of footballs. When the AFL team was on offense the thinner ball was used and when the NFL team was on offense the fatter ball was used.
After the Jets surprised and humiliated the might Colts in 1969 it became apparent that the American Football League just might be legitimate after all. The NFL Commissioner, Pete Rozell (sometimes called Pete "Dough Smell") saw a chance for big bucks to be made so he hatched a plan to merge the American Football League into the National Football League. It still retained the name of National Football League, but with two separate conferences, the National Conference (NFC) and the American Conference (AFC). To generate a little parity some former NFL teams became part of the AFC and vice versa. That's how the Colts, an old-line NFL team, became part of the AFC instead of NFC.
At that time Carrol Rosenbloom owned the Colts and they were a very successful team. Rosenbloom swapped the team for the Rams, got married to a former stripper, Georgia Frontiere, had a heart attack and died in the surf in California. That's how a former stripper gained ownership of the Rams. Meanwhile, Robert Irsay, owner of a plumbing and heating company gained control of the Colts, moved them out of Baltimore and everything went to hell for the Colts for a while.
I can only remember all this useless crap because I'm a lot older than the rest of you young punks.
I also had some distasteful business dealings with the Colts in 2007, about 5 months after they won the Super Bowl. The Colts hired me to provide some consulting and other services and the amount was approximately $8,000. I performed the services and mailed a bill. Shortly thereafter Jim Irsay, the owner, called me and said, "I just received your bill. Why should we have to pay? We are the World Champion Indianapolis Colts, you should feel honored just to do work for us for free." After many months and much bitching and complaining I think we settled the bill for about $4,000.
