Beach Theft Cases Solved

Lindsey Marie Lopez
During late September and early October of 2012, Ocean City Police received several reports involving thefts of property from the public beach areas south of 28th Street.  During the investigation, officers noticed similarities involving the various victims’ reports.  The suspect description was similar as was the type of items being stolen.

On October 5, 2012, at approximately 2:15 p.m. patrol officers responded to a theft of a purse at 16th street and the beach.  When officers arrived at the scene they were met by an off-duty Hagerstown police officer, as well as a previous victim who reported a theft of her purse from the beach the previous day.  This previous victim began observing the suspect, identified as Lindsey Marie Lopez, 23, of Berlin; attempt to steal a purse from the beach at 16th Street.  The off-duty officer detained Lopez until OCPD patrol officers arrived at the scene.

Officers recovered the stolen purse. Based on witness and victim statements, as well as information obtained during the investigation, police were able to link Lopez to at least nine additional thefts which had occurred between mid-September and early October.  Due to the cumulative value of the stolen property, Lopez was charged with Felony Theft Scheme.

At the time of Lopez’s arrest she was found in possession of a hypodermic syringe, which she admitted was illegal drug paraphernalia.

Lopez was charged with:
  • 9 counts of misdemeanor theft
  • Felony Theft Scheme
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (syringe)
Lopez was seen by an Ocean City District Court Commissioner and was held on $10,000 bond. The investigation is on-going and Ocean City Police are asking anyone who believes they may be a victim of this crime scheme to please contact Ocean City Police, Officer Moerschel at: 410-520-5368.

Latest Scam: Voting By Phone

Richmond, VA The Virginia State Board of Elections (SBE) is aware that some Virginia voters, particularly older Virginians, are receiving phone calls from unidentified individuals informing voters that they can vote over the phone. This information is false. Virginia law does not permit voting through the telephone.

Apart from voting at the polls on Election Day, eligible Virginians may vote an absentee ballot by mail or in-person at the registrars office or other authorized satellite location. However, voting cannot be done via the phone, email, or any other means than absentee voting by mail and in-person during the absentee voting period or on Election Day.

At this point in time, it is unclear how widespread these calls have been. However, SBE has received several complaints over the past few days.

These calls may violate several state and federal laws and the State Board of Elections will alert appropriate law enforcement authorities regarding this matter and provide new information if SBE receives additional voter complaints.

We encourage any voter who receives a call matching this description to ask for the name, phone number, and organization from where the individual is calling. We then ask voters to contact the State Board of Elections at 1-800-552-9745 and provide a staff member with that information.

O'Malley Pushes Radical Economic Agenda U.S., Maryland

O'Malley Advances Radical Economic Development Agenda

National GPI Movement Gains Traction in Maryland,
Redefines American Progress

Annapolis - Change Maryland released a fact sheet today to expose a radical nationwide movement underway to redefine economic progress in America. Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley recently hosted an Annapolis summit for advocates of what is called a "Genuine Progress Indicator."  The national forum received scant media attention and the issue itself has largely been under the radar of most mainstream media outlets.

The impetus behind the Genuine Progress Indicator, or GPI movement, is to supplant traditional federal government statistics with new and arbitrary criteria that deducts what other government bureaucrats deem as environmental and social costs that accrue from prosperity.

"Under Martin O'Malley, Maryland is falling further and further behind competitors in the region and across the country according to legitimate organizations, and objective, accepted and proven measures," said Change Maryland Chairman Larry Hogan.  "He wants to throw out real economic reports and adopt a radical propaganda campaign inspired by the failed model of central economic planning."

The GPI consists of 26 arbitrarily-chosen economic, environmental and social "indicators" that attempt to deduct or add various scenarios that occur with everyday life to state-government planning models.  For example, deducted would be a wide range of wildly-subjective indicators such as noise pollution and income inequality.

Nationally, the GPI agenda is pushed by groups such as New York-based Demos, a liberal public policy non-profit that describes itself as dedicated to "empowering the public sector" and that advocates "re-thinking American capitalism as it exists today."

GPI is also pushed by a cadre of left-wing university professors who say that people just need food and shelter for happiness, economies do not need to grow, individuals are interchangeable with one another and that corporations will collapse.

The web-based Maryland GPI initiative, implemented in the executive branch of Maryland State Government since 2010, also contains a number of meaningless platitudes.  For example state government tells us that, "Marylanders' social well-being is reduced when the underemployed are not working to their full potential by consequential negative feelings and actions, such as frustration and substance abuse."

"Maryland's well-being will be greatly enhanced when we stop losing businesses, jobs and our tax base," said Hogan. "It's absolutely ridiculous that accepted measures such as IRS tax migration data are ignored and this radical left-wing nonsense is what the state wants to use to measure it's lack of progress."

Maryland has lost 6,500 businesses and 31,000 members of taxpayer households between 2007 and 2010, which puts Maryland at or near the bottom of the region.  The loss of 36,000 jobs since 2007 also cements Maryland's place as a regional laggard in economic performance.

In addition to Maryland, Oregon is exploring the GPI program.  Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin signed GPI legislation into law this Spring.

In addition the fire company has a very active Cadet Corps for youths beginning at age 14 who are interested in joining the fire serve. The program has proved to be very successful and the cadet corps has made a significant contribution to our fire company.

Coast Guard Suspends Search For Boaters

The Coast Guard suspended its search for two overdue boaters aboard a 38-foot pleasure craft who departed Ocean City, Md., Saturday and did not arrive in Chincoteague, Va.

Missing are Mike Bramlett, 51, and Donald Bramlett, 54.

"The decision to suspend a search is very difficult, but after an exhaustive search by air and surface crews over the last several days, the Coast Guard suspended our search for the missing boaters," said Capt. John Little, the commander of Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads in Portsmouth. "I cannot imagine the sadness felt by the family of these men, and my deepest sympathy goes out to them."

The Coast Guard searched approximately 20,400 overlapping square miles during a 32-hour period, using Coast Guard crews aboard an HC-130 Hercules and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and a 45-foot Response Boat - Medium from Station Little Creek in Virgina Beach.

The crew of the Navy ship USS Bunker Hill assisted in the search when they spotted a possible debris field and helped vector in Coast Guard assets.

Maryland gets Pummeled Again in Prominent Business Climate Index

Annapolis - Change Maryland responded to the Tax Foundation's annual release today of the 2013 State Business Climate Tax Index,  a widely-watched barometer of states' ability to attract companies and jobs.

Maryland's ranking of 41 again makes the dubious list of the 10 lowest ranked, or worst, states in the country.

"Since 2007, in addition to losing 6,500 small businesses, Maryland has lost 31,000 residents of tax-paying households and 36,000 jobs, said Change Maryland Chairman Larry Hogan. "It's no coincidence that our lopsided tax code is causing this weakness in economic performance."

Under Governor Martin O'Malley, taxes and fees have been raised 24 times, removing an additional $2.4 billion out of the economy each year.

The non-partisan Tax Foundation compares corporate, individual income, sales, unemployment insurance and property taxes among the 50 states.

Accomack County Circuit Court

By Connie Morrison

A woman who burglarized her uncles home was sentenced October 4 in Accomack County Circuit Court. Heather Crutchley of Melfa, age 27, was on bond for an August, 2011 charge of selling Vicodin when the burglary occurred (April 2012). She initially denied any part in the theft, but when confronted with DNA evidence from a can of Dr. Pepper from which she drank while in the victims home, she admitted she had been inside the home. She was convicted on the drug charge in May, and of burglary and grand larceny in September.

Judge W. Revell Lewis III sentenced her to five years for the drug conviction, with all time suspended except what had been served, and to 10 years each for burglary and grand larceny offenses, with all but 6 months suspended. The two 10-year sentences will run concurrently, but are consecutive to the drug sentence, which means that Ms. Crutchley will spend another 6 months behind bars.

Other sentences meted out by Judge Lewis on October 4 include:

Russell Dale Corbin, Jr., of Parksley, was sentenced for possession with intent to distribute marijuana, received five years, with all but 30 days suspended.

David Ward, of Bloxom, sentenced for manufacture of marijuana, received five years, with all time suspended. Judge Lewis cited Mr. Wards flawless record, noting that not so much as a traffic conviction was found.

Joshua Lee Brown, of Bloxom, sentenced for grand larceny, received 10 years for each of six counts, with all but four months of each suspended.

Mr. Brown was part of a theft ring that stole copper wire from irrigations systems and from A and N Electric in the summer of 2011. He was also ordered to pay over $13,000 in restitution.

Laser Pointer Attacks Taking Off: Pose Serious Threat To Aviation Security

If you’ve ever thought about pointing a hand-held laser at an aircraft of any kind, think again. It’s highly dangerous and a federal crime.

The number of laser attacks in the U.S. is on the rise. Incidents are projected to reach 3,700 this year—compared to just 283 in 2005. That’s a rise of more than 1,100 percent. And that doesn’t include the thousands of attacks that go unreported every year.

George Johnson, a supervisory federal air marshal who is a liaison officer with the FBI, says the number of attacks is almost reaching an “epidemic level.”

In recent years, technology has improved the performance and power of handheld lasers; the Internet has also made these gadgets cheaper and easier to purchase.

These incidents are dangerous to pilots in the cockpit, passengers aboard the plane, and people on the ground. Captain Robert Hamilton of the Air Line Pilots Association, International was landing a plane when he was struck by a laser light. “I had temporary blindness. My eyes were burning. It caused disorientation, and it was distracting,” he says.
To combat the threat, the FBI recently established a Laser Strike Working Group National Initiative, which includes law enforcement partners and private entity stakeholders. The idea came from the FBI’s Sacramento Division, which created the first Laser Strike Working Group in 2008 to reduce incidents in the area. It worked—the number of attacks against commercial aircraft arriving and departing from the Sacramento International Airport decreased 75 percent.

Those who aim a laser pointer at an aircraft can be prosecuted under two federal statutes. A law put into effect this year makes pointing a laser at an aircraft a crime punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $11,000 per violation. Under a law already on the books, those who interfere with the operation of an aircraft can receive up to 20 years in prison and be fined $250,000.

“Use a laser pointer for what it’s made for. Aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft is dangerous and reckless. Just don’t do it,” says Johnson.
