Note: News was rather light in the local newspaper 100 years ago this week.  So we checked the newspaper date for 85 years ago and found an item that received a lot of local interest- the dedication of the new Post Office on Market Street.  The dedication was on a Thursday and the weekly Worcester Democrat then published on Friday.  Because of the short time span the news article couldn't make publication until the following week's paper, May 20, 1938 (below).

Footnote: While we weren't able to locate follow-up articles, we know (and some of us remember) that American Stores did build an ACME at the site and it was in operation for many years.  Anyone recall about when the store closed?

Willow Street and Maple Street will be closed on 5/19/2023 at approximately 2:00 p.m. for the concert detail. Clark Avenue to Laurel Street will be closed on 5/20/2023 at approximately 8:00 a.m. for concert detail. Clark Avenue will reopen following the conclusion of the concert at approximately 10:00 p.m. on 5/20/2023. Willow and Maple Street will remain closed until 5/22/2023 at approximately 8:00 a.m. Thank You for your cooperation.

• Pocomoke High School Assistant Principal Matthew Hoffman will transfer to Pocomoke Elementary School, replacing Faye Williams, whose retirement was previously announced. 

• Kristin Cashman was appointed to the Assistant Principalship at Pocomoke High School, filling Hoffman’s role.

The Downtown Pocomoke Farmers & Flea Market reopens this Friday, May 19th. No registration required. Picnic tables under the pavilion are first come, first serve. Bring your own table & come sell or shop from 7am-12pm.

 

In celebration of Men’s Health Month, the Worcester County Health Department in collaboration with the City of Pocomoke will be hosting their first Just Walk for Men’s Health event on June 10th.

The event will take place at Cypress Park in Pocomoke City. It will include a walk, no-cost health screenings, health education, and more. This family and pet-friendly event is open to all county residents.  

Registration and check-in will start at 8:30 a.m. followed by opening remarks at 9:00 a.m. by special guests Pocomoke City Mayor Todd Nock and Al “Hondo” Handy. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a pre-walk warm-up with Gary Press, owner of G Fit Boot Camp, followed by a walk through the park. After the walk, participants are encouraged to visit health vendors and participate in free health screenings, including blood pressure and a diabetes risk assessment.
