TIME MACHINE: POCOMOKE AND NEIGHBORS MAKE VALIANT FIGHT AGAINST BASE CLOSING.

December, 1958

One day late in 1958 Pocomoke City was jolted by shocking news it feared would deal a devastating blow to our town and to the lower Eastern Shore.  The fears became reality and the effects were felt for decades after and to this very day. But it was not without valiant and dedicated efforts that we and our nearby neighbors tried to prevent the closing of the U.S. Naval Air Station in Chincoteague.

The battle was not won but the spirit to stand up and rally together to fight the good fight reflects honor reserved and deserved for a generation that preceded many of us.

A December, 1958 edition of Pocomoke City's Worcester Democrat newspaper reflects the tone.

Now the good news.. six decades in the making. A WBOC news story just this past week reports on the very significant economic impact NASA's Wallops Island is making. "NASA Wallops employs nearly 1,100 people . There are roughly another 600 employed with the Navy, NOAA and private companies like S.R.S."

Here's that full story:

Picnic at annual service

Five Episcopal  churches prepare for Green Hill service

The five Episcopal churches in Wicomico County will gather for the annual service at historic Green Hill Church on Aug. 21.
The public is welcome to attend the 11 a.m. event, followed by a picnic on the scenic grounds, said the Rev. David Michaud, rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, who will preside.
Joining St. Peter’s will be St. Albans’s in Salisbury, St. Mary’s in Tyaskin, St. Philips in Quantico and St. Paul’s in Hebron.
The former Grace Church in Mount Vernon has closed.
“This tradition has been going on since the 19th century,” the Rev. Michaud said about the service.
“The daughter churches of Green Hill Church come back to the mother church once a year to hold a service and Holy Eucharist. We’ll have a choir singing and some music. The last few years we have joined for a picnic where everybody is welcome,” he said.
Planned is a modern service attended by those wearing casual attire because it’s often hot in the building.
