Pocomoke City National Night Out

What a beautiful night in Cypress Park  and what an enjoyable time!

I couldn't help but remember the two words that Mayor Morrison spoke about in a speech of his not very long ago.  Two key words.  Pride and proud.  This was my first experience with the National Night Out event and I can't imagine being in another town other than Pocomoke.

Mr. Mayor, I am Pocomoke PROUD!  I always have been.  But now, more than ever.  Pocomoke's the greatest and if any of you do not agree you just aren't trying hard enough!

This was my first experience with the National Night Out function and I can't imagine being in another town other than Pocomoke.
I don't think I have ever seen so many people milling around in the same world as I have tonight.  Everyone, young, old, black, white, rich or poor all seemed to be on the same page.

Here are some photos from earlier this evening.  I will have lots more when the sun comes up....Right now, I need some sleep.

Thanks for a wonderful evening and for the invitation, Chief Sewell!

Gotta love those Virginia boys!!
Another Virginian that takes his loved one back to Pocomoke for National Night Out!

Thank you OC104 for being in Pocomoke.  I'm not a hip-hop lover but what you did play was great. Still couldn't find a soul to dance with me!
Hamburgers sure didn't last long!  These guys worked hard and the hamburgers with french fries were great!

National Flag Week /4

NATIONAL FLAG WEEK

CYPRESS PARK

POCOMOKE CITY, MARYLAND

The only time a flag should be allowed to twist and turn is when it dances in the wind.B

What you may not know:

Superintendent Bill East of the Dept. of Public Works for Pocomoke City along with his crew are responsible for the large flag in Cypress Park and the flags displayed along the sidewalk in downtown Pocomoke City.

Bill tries to keep two flags on hand at all times in case one becomes damaged. He tries to make sure the flag has been taken down when high winds are predicted so there will be no damage to the flag or the pole. But Eastern Shore weather is not always pretictable and it's not always convenient to lower a 20' x 30' American flag under any circumstances. Flags of this size are pricey Bill and his crew, because of their special care for the flag, are helping to save the city tax dollars and always making sure that we are able to enjoy the greatest symbol of our country.

Thanks Bill! And thank you to your crew of great workers who make sure the American flag is protected. It is always the first thing I look for when I am downtown...before the red light!

NATIONAL FLAG WEEK/3

NATIONAL FLAG WEEK

Photo was taken from inside the restaurant on March 16, 2012. I couldn't wait for the windows to be installed to take this photo! B

Here's some flag news you may not know.....

The American flag in Cypress Park measures 20' x 30'. Although the flags have never been weighed it is guessed that any of the flags will weigh close to 60 pounds. It takes at least three men to handle a flag of this size making sure it never touches the ground. The term for the task of raising and lowering the flag is "striking the colors". (please correct me if this is incorrect)

Nature Trail Spring Cleaning

 Pocomoke Nature Trail Spring Cleaning

By Bill Kerbin
A group of naval personnel from the Surface Warfare Center at Wallops Island was prepared to trek into the Pocomoke nature trail for a cleanup prior to the summer season.

Don Malloy, Pocomoke City Council member, said that this is the second year that volunteers from the naval installation have worked to clean up the trail.

Pictured are: (left to right) Jonathan Spalding, Melanie Brink, Malloy, David Corey, and David Caison. They spent an afternoon last week cutting out brush and cleaning up the trail.

Photos In the Park....

The Pocomoke High School Junior-Senior Prom was held Saturday May 5, 2012

Before the prom a group of prom attendees had photos taken in Pocomoke's  Cypress Park.

This lovely looking couple had their photo taken while posing on the footbridge located at the Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden.

If  anyone from this group has photos to share that were taken in Cypress Park please send them to me.  I would be more than glad to post them.

The Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden

The Olive Lippoldt  Tidal Wetland Garden
 Cypress Park
Pocomoke City, Maryland

Very shortly after my first visit to the Olive Lippoldt Memorial Tidal Garden.

A group of sailors from  the Wallops Island Station were the first to volunteer to assist in the completion of the  foot bridge over the tidal garden.  Last fall they were on hand to volunteer their services for work needed for the extension of the Nature Trail located in the back of  Cypress Park.

Please take the time to get out and visit Cypress Park.  This is your park and the extrance fee costs nothing.  Cypress Parks provides a place for chidren to run, an  area for a picnic and plenty of shade or sunshine and fresh air.   Don't forget to take a walk across the footbridge to see what living creatures my be there.  The plaques around the garden will provide you will all the infomation you need.  See what you can discover.  Take a photo of what you find, send it to me and I will post it for everyone to see.  And even if you find nothing send me a photo of  your  family member on the bridge and I will post that also.

The wonderful group of Sailors that have given their free time to volunteer in a town far from their own hometown will never be forgotten.  The gracious woman, Olive Lippoldt, that the tidal park was named in honor of will never be forgotten.  So Pocomoke it's time  for you  to sign up and be part of the plan.

Let's continue  with the plans made to make the  Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden and  Nature Trail even better than it is.

Volunteer your time.
Here's the link to previous photos of the garden.

The Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden ~ Cypress Park

The Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden
Cypress Park ~ Pocomoke City, Maryland
April 5, 2012

If you venture into Cypress Park, just beyond the flag you will see what looks like to some nothing but weeds and overgrown brush.  Oh, how far from the reality of what this truly is.

The tidal garden was the idea of Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker  some years ago.

This selected area may look like an unkept or forgotten about area in the park but the grasses and dead looking twigs are quite essecential to the birds, insects and water life that share our space.

The photo below was taken from a Delmarva Discovery Center newsletter http://delmarvadiscoverycenter.org/documents/August09-Email.pdfin 2009.  Students and workers at the DDC helped clean in and around the garden.

More recently Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker and Don Malloy have been working to control/remove the invasive wetland grass known as phragmites from the area and replace it with other natural growth, such as the Marshmallow (althaea officinalis) which blooms in mid summer.
Which almost brings us up to speed....
This is the latest project for the tidal gardens.

Encircling the tidal garden is a graveled path with reading stations along the way providing all the information you  need to understand what occurs in tidal areas like this, what lives there and how important they are.
The foot bridge (not completed in these photos) will provide the visitor a better look at the area.  The Delmarva Discovery Center uses this are quite often in their nature walks.  And as you can see in some of the photos the DDC is just a short walk to Cypress Park.

More photos of the foot bridge nearer completion will be posted soon.  Before going I think it's  very important to mention the lovely person for which this garden was named.

The Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden is in honor of the wife of Curt Lippoldt, Mayor of Pocomoke City for many years.

She was an elementary school teacher  in Pocomoke City and well loved, not just by her students but by anyone that knew her.  In  July of 1995 Mrs. Lippoldt died and it only seems fitting that this tidal garden be nurtured and continued.

There is still plenty to do not just here in the tidal garden but on the nature trail at the back of Cypress Park also.

And here's a parting thought.... If  Mrs. Olive Lippoldt was your teacher or the teacher for your children wouldn't you like to volunteer your time, in memory of her, to keep her memory alive and so that others may enjoy the great outdoors?

Downtown Pocomoke On Thursday

It was a beautiful day yesterday in Pocomoke and it was so great being able to spend a few hours of my day there.  There is so much going on in preparation for the new restaurant to open and getting the new police station completed so the big move can be made.  What a big difference it will make in Pocomoke City when completed and I have a few photos to share later.

But first I want to share with you a group of workers that never seem to get acknowledged .......except for a written thank you from time to time.  I've never seen any  pictures of them at work!  I have some photos of these great people and I should have them posted by lunch time today.  Just have  patience with me.

But in the meantime here's a photo of the great American flag that always flys so proudly in Cypress Park.

Once the windows were revealed on the new restaurant I made it my goal to get a photo of the flags reflection.  If nothing else had happened worth talking about yesterday at least this goal had been achieved.

Pocomoke Cypress Park and Hurricane Irene

Pocomoke Cypress Park
Sunday, August 28, 2011
After Hurricane Irene
After The Storm

The largest tree closest to the American Flag lost some branches and its very top cracked and fell.
I love this tree.  My family used this tree many times as the "wait for me there" tree. Or "go no farther than" tree.  I hope it lives.
Many of us have seen Cypress Park like this quite a few times.

Many years ago when Feldman's Furniture was in business there were a few times when warehouse merchandise had to be taken to the second floor.  During that same time of flooding water would run into the backyard of what was once known the Simon Helig home.  Water would also  cover the tennis courts.
Many people were left without electricity due to hurricane Irene, including a few businesses downtown.  City Hall operated on Monday with a partial staff and is in full operation today along with the other stores and businesses.

The Delmarva Discovery Center is OPEN today but has no phone service.

And I imagine the water in the park is almost gone..........

Fires Set At Cypress Park

This morning, Sunday, August 21, 2011 the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company responded to a fire in Cypress Park.  Upon their arrival they found  several  small fires.

Small fires were found in the pavillion located towards the back of Cypress Park, the restrooms and the childrens playground!

What a shame!
If my memory is  correct those restrooms have recently had work done to them.
Regardless, this will take money and someones time to clean this up.  And playground equipment is not cheap.

According to Dicky Gladding, PCVFC, and officer in charge, the fires were extingquished quckly.

At this time the fires are being investigated by Rodney Sharpley of  The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office and the Pocomoke City Police Dept.

If you have any information about these fires please contact:
