Pocomoke Businesswoman Files For Council Seat In Pocomoke City

“You want to do what?”

This is a question I have been hearing quite a bit lately.  And the first question is generally followed by, “Why on earth do you want to do that?”

Let me introduce myself and explain.

My name is Kim Jackson, and I am running for Pocomoke City Council, District 3.

I remember being asked similar questions one year and six months ago. That is when my husband, Ed and I chose to buy a house here, and make Pocomoke City our home.  The big question then was:  “Why do you want to move to Pocomoke?”  My response was, “Why not Pocomoke?” It did not come as any surprise to me; having longtime residents ask such questions about these kinds of decisions. Over the years I have learned we all can sometimes take for granted, things in our own backyard.  We can loose perspective of all the wonderful things we have right under our noses.  We came here with a new perspective, and chose Pocomoke because of all the great things it had to offer: a beautiful riverfront, plenty of green space (especially found in Cypress Park and the trail), old homes with personality and charm, good schools, city and emergency services, cultural arts and museums, a downtown district, and all within walking distance...I could go on and on.  This is why we came to Pocomoke!

Fast forward to the present.

I am now a small business owner on Market Street in downtown, working within the community.  The downtown business district (in voting district 3) is full of potential; it's  just waiting to come back to life once again. Studies have shown that downtown revitalization helps make an area strong by encouraging locals to come back and shop local. It brings visitors to the community, and can help create jobs, too. This can generate additional revenue for the community as visitors come for the day and enjoy our city.  Added revenue can go to improving and maintaining safe streets for our district. I feel historic preservation is also important because people love to experience the past. Whether its museums, houses, churches or old storefronts; people love to feel connected to the past; they want to experience a change from today's  hustle and bustle. Cities all across the country have benefitted from revitalization efforts. We have all the “right stuff”. Let's  make it happen.

On April 1, 2014, if you live in District 3, Help me bring a new perspective to Pocomoke City, District 3.

 I would appreciate your vote.

Control Burn - Saturday Jaunary 12, 2013

CONTROL BURN
CLARKE AVENUE/WILLOW STREET
Lawson's Night Club

Fire departments participating with Pocomoke City
Volunteer Fire Company were:
Princess Anne, New Church, Stockton, Snow Hill,
Girdletree and Greenbackville

There was an almost unheard crack and the one chimney in the building gave way and as it landed into the fire the remainder of the building collapsed, as if in slow motion, to the ground without making hardly a sound.  Smoke from the evening along with dirt and dust rolled out forming the largest dark cloud I had ever seen.

Another chapter closed.

More Reasons To Visit Downtown Pocomoke !

RIVER CRUISES & SANTA SATURDAYS

Photo BW
Pocomoke City – 5 December 2012 – Mayor Bruce Morrison and his wife, Laura, have introduced a new tradition this year to add to the growing list of Christmas festivities in Pocomoke: Christmas river cruises.  It is their intention to capitalize on the area’s greatest asset, the Pocomoke River.  The effort began when they requested the owners of riverfront properties participate by decorating their home for the holidays.

Bay Queen Cruises will take guests on an evening tour of these homes, via the Pocomoke River.  Cruises require advance reservations and occur at 7:00pm on Thursdays and Fridays throughout December, beginning December 6.  Captain John Riggi and First Mate Mary Ann take guests on a 40-minute tour that includes live Christmas music and hot cocoa along the way. The cost is $10 per person.  Reservations are required and can be made by calling: 443-437-7235 or 410-632-1415.

On Saturdays throughout December, Santa Claus will visit with children from 11:00am – 1:00pm in his cabin downtown.  Our Santa house sits in the new downtown mini-park, at the corner of Market & Second Streets.  There is no charge.  The Junior Women’s Club of Pocomoke will be offering a picture with Santa for $5.00.

Folks are encouraged to cross the street to A Second Time Around (125 Market Street), vintage and collectibles shop, for some special treats.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Riverside Grill At Lunch Time

I finally had time to relax and have an wonderful lunch on Friday  at the Riverside Grill.  My aunt is visiting from Florida for a few weeks so she treated my sister, brother and myself to lunch.  I must tell you first that SHE enjoyed it and even struck up a conversation with the ladies seated at the table next to us.

Lots of local people in for lunch and I was amused at the table of ladies next to us who were there to celebrate a birthday and even brought their own cake!  They were enjoying themselves and that's what it's all about.  It's so nice to see people enjoying themselves especially in a  dowtown restaurant.

And I have to say that after months of walking through a "shell" with a camera it seemed as if the restaurant would never become a reality.  But it did and now the restaurant is here and it's quite apparent that it is being used.  They were busy!  But not too busy to be cordial, polite and quick with service.  Try the crab cakes when you go if you haven't all ready.  We all enjoyed it very much and thank you Corey for taking the photo of the four of us  with my camera.

Thank you to all of you at Riverside Grill and I will be back for another great meal real soon.  Corey, you are doing a wonderful job.  And Aunt Doris, thank you for the lunch!
