Baltimore Grand Prix in 2011

Gov. Martin O'Malley and Mayor Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake announced Wednesday the long-anticipated deal to transform downtown Baltimore into a high-speed raceway for Indy-style cars.

Flanked by racing stars Al Unser Jr. and Graham Rahal, officials proclaimed the Baltimore Grand Prix a "game-changer" that they said would inject millions of dollars into the city's economy.

"It will bring eyes from all around the world to Baltimore and to Maryland," said O'Malley, who compared the race's impact to the Preakness.

The three-day event, which will include an auto show and races leading up to the Indy Racing League-sanctioned competition, is scheduled for the first weekend in August 2011, and to return to the city each of the next four years.

Rawlings-Blake, who attended the Indianapolis 500 last weekend with Deputy Mayor Kaliope Parthemos and City Councilman William H. Cole IV, said open-wheel racing aficionados are preparing to visit Baltimore.

"We talked to vendors who were trying to figure out how to be a part of it. We talked to race fans who were already planning where they're going to stay and who they're going to bring," said Rawlings-Blake. "It's just an excitement I've never experienced before."

Officials estimate the race will draw more than 100,000 visitors to the city and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales, hotel stays and restaurant meals. O'Malley said the race would support 400 jobs and produce $65 million to $70 million in economic impact.

City transportation director Alfred H. Foxx said the contract to build the 2.4-mile course, which will wind along Pratt, Light, Conway and Russell streets, with a pit stop by Camden Yards, would likely be awarded late this summer.

Surveying and planning will begin in the fall, and construction will start early next year, he said. Some streets will need to be widened, especially to accommodate passing at turns, and the light rail tracks will need to be altered, he said.

The city has dedicated $7.75 million in state and federal money for the roadwork. Baltimore Racing Development LLC, a private company, will pay the Indy Racing League about $2 million each year to host the event and will share the profits from ticket sales.

The group will spend about $14 million to prepare for the race and pay the city a $250,000 annual fee and a percentage of profits.

Martyn Thake, who has been hired to design the race course, said he has drawn up plans for more than 30 racetracks but is most excited about Baltimore's course.

"I think this location has the ability to be an East Coast Long Beach," he said, referring to the 37-year-old California course considered the grandfather of American street racing. "It's going to look so freaking sexy on TV — the water, the ships, the buildings."

Fourth Friday Events In Crisfield

CRISFIELD — The kickoff of a series of Fourth Friday events will start Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Crisfield.

Shops in the area will stay open late and there will be live music on the streets provided by the Menno’lites.

Visitors will also be encouraged to dine in local restaurants and watch the sunset over Tangier Sound.

Fourth Fridays also are scheduled on June 25, July 23 and Aug. 27.

Pocomoke City Christmas Parade

The 2009 Date Has Been Set!

On November 30, 2009 (Rain date Dec.2) Pocomoke City will be turned into a magnificent winter wonderland with one of Delmarva's largest nighttime Christmas parades. Always held on the first Monday night after Thanksgiving, the Pocomoke parade has become an Eastern Shore tradition and will attract over 100 units from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia along with thousands of spectators. As part of the tradition, parade night is said to be the "coldest night of the year. Each year the parade features marching bands representing middle and high schools from seven counties in three states.

Also featured will be beautifully decorated and lighted floats entered by schools, civic organizations, churches and commercial enterprises. Clowns, marching units, fire departments, equestrian units, and of course the one and only "Santa Claus" will round out the two-hour event, slated to kick-off at 7:00 pm. sharp. Also as tradition the blowing of the fire siren will signal the starting of the parade. The route will take the parade North on Market Street beginning at 14th Street and ending at the Pocomoke River.


Professional Judges, from the Judges Association, will score entries in 10 different categories. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded immediately following the event to the top entries in each category. A special thanks to the community of Pocomoke City and Surrounding areas for the recent support given to us to continue this great tradition that has been a part of the town of over 30 years. Hospital Staff Boogies on Down for Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is long gone, but that doesn’t stop the staff at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Ore. From administrators to nurses, cleaning crews to surgeons, everyone threw on a pair of pink gloves and got down in the spirit of raising awareness for breast cancer.

More Bollywood than ER, the video is an infectious, upbeat dance to Jay Sean’s “Down.” Kudos to the elderly man with a broom for the best solo performance. It’s a tie between the lab technicians and the surgical staff for best small-group choreographed dance. “Our employees put together this video to generate breast cancer awareness throughout our hospital system,” according to the video’s YouTube page. “We had a ton of fun putting this together and hope it inspires others to join in the cause.” The video shows that there’s more than one way to fight cancer. Although the clip lacks professional dance moves, it sure makes up for it in charisma, style and hope.

Britons Row From Japan to San Francisco

Two British men rowed unassisted across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to San Francisco, arriving at the Golden Gate Bridge on Friday, TV station KGO has reported.

The journey of 5,100 miles took 189 days to complete. Chris Martin, 28, and Mick Dawson, 45 -- both experienced rowers -- are the first to row unescorted across the North Pacific Ocean, according to the Web site they set up to chronicle the feat, which they called the Golden Gate Endeavour.

Martin and Dawson set out in April from Choshi, Japan, in a 23-foot row boat called the Bojangles. The boat left Japan with everything needed for the trip, including all food and supplies, a water desalinator and communication and video systems powered by solar panels, the sailors' Web site said.

Typhoons and tropical storms are a constant threat in the North Pacific. Both Martin and Dawson had crossed the Atlantic before, but said that was nothing compared to this. Wind and currents blew them off course and set them a few days behind.

"The North Pacific is the most hostile, fantastic, beautiful, worst, best place you can go to," Dawson told KGO.

After arriving at the Golden Gate Bridge on Friday, the sailors accepted a tow to the Golden Gate Yacht Club, where friends and family from the United States, Canada and England were waiting.

Martin and Dawson solicited donations on their Web site, with proceeds going to two charities: the Hamilton Lodge School in England and Hearts of Gold children's hospice in Nigeria.

They announced that since they raised enough to cover their expenses through sponsorships before they set out, all donations would go to charity.

The men told KGO they would sleep about two hours every night and then take 12-hour shifts rowing.

Pocomoke Warriors win 7th straight title

Pocomoke field hockey coach Susan Pusey felt confident coming into the MPSSAA 1A state final, knowing that if the Warriors played their precision passing game, they most likely would be successful in capturing their seventh straight state title.

In the championship tilt Saturday, the Warriors' execution was nearly flawless, as Taylor West scored three goals, with the first tally coming just more than two minutes into the contest, en route to a 5-1 victory over Bohemia Manor, a first-time playoff participant.

"We always talk before the game that we need to come out with a bang," said West, a junior forward. "It catches other teams off guard sometimes, so you always want to come out strong."

West certainly started the game out with a bang, as she rang a laser shot off the back board of the Bohemia Manor cage to give Pocomoke an early 1-0 lead. The Warriors opened the game with possession and worked their way into the Eagles' circle, earning a penalty corner before the game was two minutes old. Pocomoke senior Michelle Roberts sent the ball into play, finding the stick of Kasey Tapman. Tapman then tapped the ball over to West, who unloaded on the ball and sent it into the far corner of the Eagles' cage.

"They wanted to score in the first three minutes. That was there goal," Pusey said. "They came out and did it. Normally, when they set there mind to something, they do pretty well at doing it."

The Warriors were far from finished, as they doubled their lead just six minutes later. Tapman created a turnover 30 yards from goal and weaved around multiple Eagle defenders on her way to the circle. On the junior's first step into the circle, she ripped a rocket shot that went through the wickets of the Bohemia keeper, giving Pocomoke a 2-0 lead.

2009 Punkin Chunkin

Three thousand local pumpkins have been delivered and the Punkin Chunkin machines have moved in for action.

This Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7 the 24th annual
Punkin Chunkin festival begins in rural Bridgeville, Delaware.

It is expected that 80,000 spectators. along with teams not only from up and down the east coast but from Michingan and as far as Colorado will attend the popular event. This year the festival grounds have been rearranged so spectators can get a closer view of the activities along with almost doubled parking.

So with the wonderful weather predicted for this weekend and if you are looking for something different to do take the ride to Bridgeville, Del. Arrange a tailgaiting party while watching the cannons fire.

The current world record for shooting a pumpkin the greatest distance was set last year by the Young Glory III team. That pumpkin traveled a distance of 4,483.51 feet.

Lets Get Down and Dirty, Doing it in the mud.

Mud and sled trucks are coming back!
It was once a very big event here on the shore with boggs in just about every city and town. It's coming back and each year seams to bring more and more trucks to the slippery slopes.

To a motor-head about the only thing better than hearing a finely tuned engine and smelling cam-2 is smelling Alcohol, add mud and it's on.

At Baltimore Inner Harbor’s McKeldin Square

Purpose: To have a large, completely peaceful and unarmed gathering of supporters of “Shall Issue” laws in Maryland. We will be wearing empty holsters in protest of the current “Discretionary Issue” system that sees Handgun Carry Permits issued only to those politically connected or dealing in extraordinarily large amounts of physical cash, or the occasional person who can meet the high burden of proof needed to receive one for self defense.

How to Participate: The intent is to have a nice day with the family and friends at the Inner Harbor, shopping, eating and sight seeing while wearing, in plain sight, an empty holster. You will know others participating in the protest by their open holsters. Stop by the Open Holster Day Rally information booth at McKeldin Square, located at the intersection of Light and Pratt Streets, introduce yourself and make new friends.

Basic Safety Rules: All holsters must remain empty at all times. Do not put toy guns, training guns or the like in your holster. We want to emphasize the emptiness of the holsters and our lack of protection. The holster will simply be a fashion accessory, symbolizing our vulnerability to criminals.

Long Term: The plan is to build on each Open Holster Day Rally, gathering more protesters to join us in January, during the Legislative session, to take the protest to the next “Shall Issue" bill hearing. Join us, make friends and help the movement to get Shall Issue Conceal Carry in Maryland.
