Florida sued for ticketing motorists who warn others of speed traps

Florida is facing a class-action lawsuit from drivers who have been ticketed for attempting to warn other motorists of hidden speed traps. According to WTSP 10 News, Eric Campbell was recently cited for just that, despite the fact that there is no law against using one's headlights to communicate with other drivers. The officer who ticketed Campbell used Florida State Statute 316.2397, even though the courts ruled that the police were wrongfully applying the law to crack down on vehicle-to-vehicle communication in 2005. Now Campbell wants his $100 ticket refunded and $15,000 in damages.

Since 2005, over 10,429 drivers have been cited for flashing their high beams, and if Campbell wins his case, Florida could be facing over $1 million in ticket refunds. But that's nothing compared to the $156.4 million the state could have to pay out if each driver is awarded $15,000 each. Hit the jump to take a look at news report on the lawsuit.

After Hurricane Irene

After The Storm

The largest tree closest to the American Flag lost some branches and its very top cracked and fell.

I love this tree.  My family used this tree many times as the "wait for me there" tree. Or "go no farther than" tree.  I hope it lives.

Many of us have seen Cypress Park like this quite a few times. 

Many years ago when Feldman's Furniture was in business there were a few times when warehouse merchandise had to be taken to the second floor.  During that same time of flooding water would run into the backyard of what was once known the Simon Helig home.  Water would also  cover the tennis courts.

Many people were left without electricity due to hurricane Irene, including a few businesses downtown.  City Hall operated on Monday with a partial staff and is in full operation today along with the other stores and businesses. 

The Delmarva Discovery Center is OPEN today but has no phone service.

And I imagine the water in the park is almost gone..........

Pocomoke Fire Department Called To Assist Pocomoke City Public Works

On August 27, 2011 at 6:17 PM the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company was called to assist Pocomoke City Public works with a tree on a residence. 

 As a result of the high winds and heavy rains caused by Hurricane Irene at the time a  large tree in the yard of a residence on 10th Street split into two sections causing one half to fall onto the home while the other section blocked 10th Street.

According to Chief Dick Gladding the residents were home at the time and stated that they heard a  loud POP!

No in the home was injured but could not stay in the home due to safety reasons.

Chincoteatgue To Collect Storm Debis Left From Storm....

The Town of Chincoteague has announced it will be collecting debris left from Hurricane Irene until September 9.

In order to have debris picked up, please place it at curbside, brush must be separated from other types of debris, brush shouldn't be any longer than 8 feet and no larger than 6 inches in diameter, debris should not include hazardous materials.

Please call the Town Office to ensure your debris will be collected at 336-6519.

Hurricane Irene Gives A Preview

Hurricane Irene decides to introduce herself by stirring up her winds causing a large tree to fall onto power lines on Cedar Steet  causing the lines to arc.

The Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company responded to the call on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 11:29 AM.

Hoping the rest of the day into the evening and all night long was uneventful and everyone remained safe.

But a closer inspection of the home following Libyan rebels' ransacking has now revealed some of the unspeakable horrors to have allegedly taken place on its premises -- even among those trusted to take care of the colonel's grandchildren.
As CNN is reporting, Shweyga Mullah, an Ethiopian woman who'd been working as a nanny to Hannibal's two children, claims she suffered brutal abuse at the hands of Hannibal's wife, Aline.
"She took me to a bathroom and tied my hands behind my back, and tied my feet," the 30-year-old Mullah told CNN, before describing having been scalded after she refused to beat Hannibal's young son when he wouldn't stop crying. "She tied my mouth...and she started pouring the boiling water on my head like this."
Mullah, whose wounds appeared to be in desperate need of medical attention, said she was never paid for her work. "I worked for a whole year; they didn't give me one penny," she noted. "She said, 'No money for you. You just work.'"

President Obama's uncle, arrested

Onyango Obama, Uncle Of President, Arrested For Drunk Driving

Onyango Obama, President Obama's uncle, was arrested on August 24 in Massachusetts for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, CBS News reports.
According to CNN, Onyango Obama was arrested in Framingham, a Boston suburb, after not stopping his SUV at an intersection.
The Metro West Daily News reports that he had a blood alcohol level of .14 when tested with a Breathalyzer at the police station. The legal limit in Massachusetts is .08, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Police said that when asked if he wanted to make a phone call, Obama said: "I think I will call the White House." A spokesman for Cleveland immigration attorney Margaret Wong, who is representing him, confirmed that the 67-year-old is the president's uncle.

Police say the president's uncle is originally from Kenya and is being held without bail on a detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Wong was one of the attorneys who represented Zeituni Onyango, President Obama's aunt, who last year was granted political asylum after spending ten years as an undocumented immigrant in Boston.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment from The Boston Herald, the paper reports.

Chincoteague ponies safe after Hurricane Irene tears past

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (AP) -- The Chincoteague ponies are safe after Hurricane Irene tore past their island.

Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company spokeswoman Denise Bowden said Sunday that the herd of wild horses owned by the fire company since the 1920s made it through the storm without any nicks or scratches.

The company owns more than 100 of the wild ponies that graze on nearby Assateague Island. The ponies made famous by the novel "Misty of Chincoteague" and a subsequent movie are now visited by hundreds of thousands of people a year.

I have been miserable all day because of you.  Everytime I go out to use the bathroom I get my paws wet and there has been no time to play with my new friend Sprout.

We argued over a toy and our mommy took it away from us because we pulled the stuffing out and made the living room look like it had snowed.  I hope mom takes us to that store for smart pets tomorrow for a new one.

 My mommy says you will be gone in the morning. But for now you are scaring our mommy so would you please go away now.

National Guard Arrives At Onancock Armory

Several units of the Virginia National Guard arrived Friday night at the Onancock Armory.

The guard units, escorted by the Virginia State Police came to prepare to assist local residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

This was the scene Friday morning at the Food Lion and SK Nails  at T's Corner in Oak Hall, Va.

Shoppers doing their normal Friday shopping chore and shoppers stocking up for the storm led to what looked to be a food shopping frenzy!

Within a few short hours Hurrican Irene will be on our doorsteps. So PLEASE people as you go out today to do any shopping remember this:

Be kind to those waiting on you whether it be behind the deli counter or the check out. Many of these people have been working etra hours to accomadate all of us.

Take into consideration also that these people have families of their own that may need to be taken care of along with making last minute preparations in their own homes before this horrible storm lands in our laps.

Take it easy on the roads. Every driver out there today plans to return home to a family just as you do.

And don't get too upset if the selections you want or if what you need isn't there. Batteries, flashlights and storm necessities are scarce.

Use patience and be safe.

Keen Eyes and Cameras Help Nab Deshield

Believe that the cameras placed around Pocomoke don't work, aren't helpful and don't get used if you want to but they DO work. 

The keen eye of a Pocomoke fire/emergency person, seeing smoke as they traveled  over the Pocomoke City bridge downtown early on Sunday, August 21, 2011 aided in keeping the fires set in Pocomoke's Cypress Park  to  a minimum.

The alarm sounded around 6:46 am with the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company arriving just minutes later.

Rodney Sharpley from the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office determined that the fires set in the restrooms, a park pavilion and at the children's playground was a result of arson.

The cameras, positioned in the park, were viewed immediatly and the person seen leaving the park was recognized by one of the Pocomoke City police officers. The subject was taken to the Pocomoke City police station for questioning and arrested.

　

Arrested was Anthony Deshield of Pocomoke City.   Deshield was charged with 2nd Deg. Arson, 2nd Deg. Malicious Burning and Malicious Destruction of property of another.

It was determined that Deshield did not use any type of flammable materials or excellerants in starting the fires. He has been denied bond.

Latest News From the Chincoteague Vol. Fire Company

The Town of Chincoteague’s Emergency Management Team continues to monitor Hurricane Irene. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Chincoteague Island.

The National Hurricane Center’s current forecast has Hurricane Irene very close to Chincotea...gue late Saturday night and early Sunday morning with hurricane force winds, heavy rain, and tidal flooding arriving by mid-day Saturday.


Currently all non-residents should be evacuated.

Phase III of the Town’s Evacuation Plan will go into affect at 7:00 PM Friday night. Phase III requires a mandatory evacuation of all residents. All residents should be off the island by 12:00 noon Saturday August 27, 2011. Only emergency personnel will be allowed on the island.

The shelter will open at 6:00 AM Saturday, August 27, 2011.

The shelter for Chincoteague Island will be at the Arcadia Middle School 29485 Horsey Road, in Oak Hall. No Pets are allowed in the shelter. Please bring water, food, and medications needed for your family.

POCOMOKE CITY STATEMENT REGARDING HURRICANE IRENE

August 26, 2011

Pocomoke City officials are encouraging local residents to take all necessary precautions well in advance of the approaching hurricane. Although mandatory evacuation has not been ordered at this time, officials say residents in lower areas should consider relocating to higher areas for the weekend. In advance of the storm, residents should also take normal precautions including securing yard furniture and arranging for supplies of food, batteries, water, and other emergency items.

During this storm, which should begin affecting us late Saturday afternoon, residents are being asked to stay indoors as much as possible. According to Mayor Bruce Morrison, “I encourage all residents to use common sense during the height of the storm on Saturday night and Sunday. Travel will be very difficult, if not impossible, in certain areas due to expected high water levels and the possibility of fallen trees in the roadways.” Mayor Morrison added that City crews will be on standby throughout the hurricane. These crews will include ambulance services, fire department, police department, public works, and water and sewer utilities. From Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, volunteer fire crews, along with City ambulance crews will be staged at the fire department in case of emergencies, and extra staff will be on duty.

Mayor Morrison added “Our emergency plans are now in effect. We are asking the cooperation of all residents to stay indoors during this storm. Residents are also asked to report trees that may fall into the roadways, power lines that may be down, or other general emergencies by calling 410-957-1600, or 443-735-0033”.

Worcester County has announced that the evacuation and temporary shelter site for Pocomoke City will be Pocomoke High School. The temporary shelter will be open beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Sleeping cots will be provided, and there will be a designated pet area at the school.

After the storm has passed, City crews will be out clearing debris and restoring services as quickly as possible. According to Mayor Morrison, “The City Council, City Manager, staff and I are taking this hurricane event very seriously. We are committed to providing the best possible services to the public both during and after the storm”.

 The Shelter at the Pocmoke High School is available at 5 pm on FRIDAY, make sure you bring a carrier and proof of vaccination with your pet.

Plus, bring bedding for you and loved ones, cots WILL NOT be provided.

With regard to the fast approaching and extremely dangerous Hurricane Irene, Accomack County Emergency Management officials are advising all residents to prepare for high winds, 2 to 5 foot of storm surge, freshwater flooding, high waves and tidal flooding conditions beginning Saturday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. Tropical Storm force winds are expected to impact Accomack at approximately noon Saturday. All residents should be secure where they plan to stay during the hurricane before noon Saturday.

Emergency Management is issuing a mandatory evacuation order starting Friday morning at 8:00 am for residents in mobile homes and any homes that are in bayside and seaside evacuation zones. Bayside evacuation areas include all homes generally west of Craddockville Road, Boston Road, Greenbush Road (Rt. 316), Mears Road and Neil Parker Road. Seaside evacuation areas include all homes generally east of Seaside Road, Atlantic Road and Fleming Road. A detailed map of the evacuation zones can be found on the Accomack County website - http://www.co.accomack.va.us/index2.html

Any mobile home should be evacuated as mobile homes may not withstand the high winds expected during this storm.

Areas safe from storm surge and tidal flooding include most of the "spine" of the Eastern Shore – including the towns of Painter, Keller, Melfa, Onley, Parksley, Bloxom, Hallwood and New Church.

Residents should closely monitor their local media outlets or the Accomack County website for additional emergency information.

Ocean City Emergency Management officials will initiate phase three of the hurricane action plan in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Phase three will go into effect at midnight tonight.

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan has signed a proclamation declaring a local State of Emergency.

All persons other than identified emergency personnel are ordered to evacuate. Visitors are asked to return to their principle residences. Ocean City residents are asked to seek shelter elsewhere.

Utilizing the authority under a local State of Emergency, the Mayor is banning the sale of all alcohol in Ocean City and requests that all businesses close beginning at midnight.

All incoming traffic to Ocean City, Maryland, will be limited to emergency personnel. No other vehicles will be permitted entry to the island, except by approved authority (Mayor, City Manager and Emergency Services Director).

Ocean City Municipal Transportation System is providing transportation for special needs individuals. For special needs transportation, please call Ocean City Transportation at 410-723-1606. International student workforce evacuation continues and will be completed by tomorrow morning.

The Ocean City Government Cable Access Channel 4, the Ocean City website www.ocmdemergency.com, recorded emergency management line, 410-723-6666 and Ocean City advisory radio station 1670 AM will remain operational for further advisories.

Ocean City is expected to receive a significant impact from Hurricane Irene.

Easterly gale force winds should start affecting the area on Saturday, August 27 at 5 p.m. with hurricane-force winds arriving around 4 a.m. and lasting for a period of eight hours. 

The highest wind speeds from Hurricane Irene should occur near 9 a.m. when top sustained winds, from the north, could reach 90 mph with gusts near 120 mph. Winds should decrease below hurricane force shortly thereafter.

Sustained winds will fall below gale force after 3 p.m. and generally be from the north during this period of decreasing winds. Expect gusts above gale force level for several more hours thereafter.

The total rainfall for the Ocean City area over the next three days is forecast to be 9.5 inches. This can vary significantly as tropical storm and hurricane rainfall is very difficult to predict.

Storm surge is expected to be six-feet above normal high tide cycles resulting in significant flooding in low-lying areas.

Hurricane Info - But not much.........

HURRICANE IRENE: 8AM Update - Irene is still a category 3 storm moving through the Bahamas. A Hurricane Watch is in effect from Surf City, NC to the Virginia line. Some additional strengthening is expected today and Irene could reach to category 4 strength.

Irene is moving NW but a turn to the NNW is expected today with a north turn tonight. The center of the forecast track has Irene moving over the Outer Banks on Saturday.

Follow this link and for information regarding the location of shelters if they open, what to bring, what not to bring, etc.  Study it carefully- remember IF there is the need to evacuate there  will be many people- all of which will be just as upset as the rest of us.

This is the best information I can find at the present time.  I am unable to find anything written recently to the Accomack County residents concerning Hurrican Irene.  It would be in the interest of saving lives to post what has to happen before a shelter is opened. 

Maybe check with your local fire department or police department to see what information they may have for your area.

Former Baltimore Oriole's Pitcher Found Dead

(CNN) -- Mike Flanagan, a former Cy Young Award winning pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles, was found dead Wednesday evening, the baseball team said.

"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan earlier this evening. In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field," Orioles owner Peter Angelos said.

Flanagan also worked as a broadcaster and executive with the Orioles after his 15-year career pitching for the team. He also played several years with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The lefty's best season was in 1979 when he won 23 games for the Orioles and garnered the Cy Young Award.

Authorities found Flanagan's body on a trail near his Maryland home, CNN affiliate WMAR reported.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to Flanagan's death, the affiliate said.

Protecting Your Pets From the Storm

Four months from today let's hope we are all safe and warm and sitting near the Christmas tree!

But it isn't Christmas and we must endure this horrible storm we have all dreaded for days.

Hurricane Irene shifted to the WEST last evening.......

Yesterday evening someone asked me the question concerning pets and what to do with them in the case of evacuation. (and pets aren't invited to go)

That's a VERY good question!  And it is a question I CAN NOT find the answer to.

Surely when decisions are being made concerning weather like this someone on the "board of bright ideas" must own an pet-- even if it's a tank of fish!

Please read the information below.  At this time it's the best i can find.  If YOU know where/if any shelters will be available PLEASE let me know.  And in the meantime I will keep searching.

The best way to protect your family from the effects of a disaster is to have a disaster plan. If you are a pet owner, that plan must include your pets. Being prepared can save their lives.

If you must evacuate, make sure you find a safe shelter for your pets. If it's not safe for you, it's not safe for them. Pets left behind can become injured, lost or ill. So, prepare now for the day when you and your pets may have to leave your home.

• Medications, immunization records and a first aid kit.
• Sturdy leashes, muzzles, harnesses, carriers or cages to transport pets safely. Carriers should be large enough for the pet to stand comfortably, turn around and lie down. Include blankets or towels for bedding and warmth.
• Current photos of your pets in case they get lost.
• Food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter/pan and can opener.
• Information on feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior problems and the name and number of your veterinarian.
• Pet beds and toys, if easily transportable.
• Medications, immunization records and a first aid kit.
• Sturdy leashes, muzzles, harnesses, carriers or cages to transport pets safely. Carriers should be large enough for the pet to stand comfortably, turn around and lie down. Include blankets or towels for bedding and warmth.
• Current photos of your pets in case they get lost.

• Have a Safe Place To Take Your Pets Many public disaster shelters cannot accept pets because of health and safety regulations and other considerations. The only animals allowed in some shelters are service animals that assist people with disabilities. Research your sheltering options before a disaster strikes. Work with your local emergency management and humane organizations to develop sheltering alternatives for people with pets.
  
  Contact hotels and motels outside your immediate area to check policies on accepting pets.
  
  Ask friends, relatives or others outside your area whether they could shelter your animals in an emergency. Prepare a list of animal shelters, boarding facilities and veterinarians who could shelter animals in an emergency.
  
  Know What To Do As a Disaster Approaches Call ahead to confirm emergency shelter arrangements for you and your pets. Check to be sure your pet disaster supplies are ready to take at a moment's notice. Bring all pets into the house so you won't have to search for them if you have to leave in a hurry. Make sure all dogs and cats are wearing collars and up-to-date identification tags.
  
  If You Shelter in Place ("Stay Put") Identify a safe area of your home where you can all stay together, including your pets. Keep dogs on leashes and cats in carriers. Be sure they are wearing identification tags. Have medications and a supply of pet food and water inside watertight containers.
  
  In Case You're Not Home Make arrangements in advance for a trusted meighbor to take your pets and meet you at a predetermined location. Make sure that the person is comfortable around your pets, knows where they are likely to be, knows where your disaster supplies are kept and has a key to your home.
  
  If you use a pet-sitting service, it may be able to help, but discuss this possibility well in advance.
  
  After a Disaster Walk pets on a leash until they become re-oriented to their home - often familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and pets could easily be confused and become lost. Also, downed power lines, reptiles brought in with high water and debris can all pose a threat for animals after a disaster.
  
  If pets cannot be found after a disaster, contact the local animal control office to find out where lost animals can be reclaimed. Bring along a picture of your pet if possible.
  
  Get your pets back into their normal routines as soon as possible. After a disaster, animals can become aggressive or defensive - monitor their behavior. If these problems persist or if your pet seems to be having any health problems, talk to your veterinarian.
