Due to a few other obligations for the past few days I haven't been able to get to Pocomoke for any amount of time.  I dropped by late Sunday afternoon and before I crossed the bridge I noticed the lighting that had been mounted.... and they look wonderful!

The brickwork has been extended to the back of the restaurant.  I can only imagine what a tedious job that was.  But the work is beautiful and complements the entire restaurant and setting so well.

Work is still being done inside the restaurant and from what I understand great  things are being done in the kitchen....that's a good thing because I think we are all just about ready to have a meal there!

With every week that passes opening day is that much closer and it's  closer now than it  was  in December. 

Once open,  the restaurant will feature indoor dining with windows to view the river or dining on the deck.  Either way you'll have quite a view of the river and its surroundings.

And remember:  NO FEE for docking your boat.  And NO FEE for the beauty that surrounds you.

 A big thankyou to my wonderful husband for making sure I complete my mission.

The Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden

The Olive Lippoldt  Tidal Wetland Garden

Very shortly after my first visit to the Olive Lippoldt Memorial Tidal Garden.

A group of sailors from  the Wallops Island Station were the first to volunteer to assist in the completion of the  foot bridge over the tidal garden.  Last fall they were on hand to volunteer their services for work needed for the extension of the Nature Trail located in the back of  Cypress Park.

Please take the time to get out and visit Cypress Park.  This is your park and the extrance fee costs nothing.  Cypress Parks provides a place for chidren to run, an  area for a picnic and plenty of shade or sunshine and fresh air.   Don't forget to take a walk across the footbridge to see what living creatures my be there.  The plaques around the garden will provide you will all the infomation you need.  See what you can discover.  Take a photo of what you find, send it to me and I will post it for everyone to see.  And even if you find nothing send me a photo of  your  family member on the bridge and I will post that also.

The wonderful group of Sailors that have given their free time to volunteer in a town far from their own hometown will never be forgotten.  The gracious woman, Olive Lippoldt, that the tidal park was named in honor of will never be forgotten.  So Pocomoke it's time  for you  to sign up and be part of the plan. 

Let's continue  with the plans made to make the  Olive Lippoldt Tidal Wetland Garden and  Nature Trail even better than it is.

The New Restaurant

Things were on the move around the restaurant during the first part of the week.

A fence has been erected to hide the back of the restaurant, which is a good idea.

No matter how small the job something is always being done in the new restaurant. 

On April 5th when I took photos the entire walls had already been painted with a base coat.  I don't mind telling you that those walls were painted with the brightest white I had ever seen....UGH!

In talking with Councilman Malloy and hearing his news I KNEW I couldn't wait for another  week to pass....

This is what I found - no not this......

THIS!!!  A burst of color!!

I'm not the world's best photographer but the camera has done a nice job on giving you some idea of the choice of blues.  It's beautiful.   And as for me I don't think another color would suit this restaurant considering where it sits.

The hardest work, I would imagine,  has been completed.  Remember that the only thing on this site just a few months ago was dirt.....those photos are on this blog too.  I've watched this building grow.  I've met some wonderful people along the way.  And most of those wonderful people are hard working people right from good old Pocomoke!  They are your sons, your brothers, your husbands or your neighbor.  They helped build this masterpiece that now sits and overlooks the Pocomoke River.  Each and every business, whether from Pocomoke City or not,  has done an outstanding job.

 I know how to enter the building. I know where the EXITS are.  I've found the restrooms. Now I'm just waiting on the kitchen............

I have been asked many times why the tyveck still remains over the window in the new restaurant.  And NO it is not still covered due to vandalism.  A different type of window has been ordered for that area of the building to make it easier for serving customers on the deck.

Still alot of work left to do on the waterfront restaurant. Walls are in place and the opened windows really gives a clear picture of the wonderful scenery.   

Most of the work was being done on the outside while I was there.  The guys working on this day have really been working hard to get this restaurant in shape and operatable by May.  Up and down ladders all day... I bet they sleep well at night. 

This new restaurant will seat 120 people and will have a deck outside that will seat approximately 40.  No charge for the spectacular views.  The restaurant is also within walking distance of Cypress Park, downtown stores, Sturgis One Room  School Museum and just steps away from the Delmarva Discovery Center.

Did I mention the spectacular view of the Pocomoke River?

Restaurant Progress-- Moving Right Along....

The photos I posted the last time showed the restaurant in downtown Pocomoke City all wrapped in Tyvek and just sitting there beside the Pocomoke River in the  cold winter weather in Pocomoke City.

But the action now is on the inside!!!

I had imagined that at some point in time my bi-weekly trips to the growing restaurant would end  but they didn't!  Councilman Malloy made it possible for me to venture in to take photos.....after all he recognizes that this is my project, it means alot to me and after all...... it's his district!

We went in through the back of the restaurant oesn't look like much has been done (to me).  'm sure there has...Wiring is being run, kitchen seems to be making progress....

And there are windows, windows, windows!!!  I like the thought of looking out towards the river from inside.

The restaurant has been designed so that there are decks at both ends.

When completed this restaurant will be an asset to downtown Pocomoke City.  From what I am hearing contruction is ahead of schedule.  The city is still accepting proposals from interested and qualified restaurateurs and will be until January 31, 2012.  So if you are interested you don't have much time.

When completed the restaurant will seat at least 140 guests with the decks to hold an additional 40.  The city plans to have the restaurant in operaton by June 2012.   Information on the qualifications for being the restaurant operation go HERE  or www.cityofpocomoke.com

Hmmm.... I wonder how they will select a name for it.

I'd like to thank the two gentlemen working inside the restaurant, for allowing me to take pictures.  Sorry I didn't get back to help sweep up.

Here's A Fish Tale About the One That DIDN'T Get Away!

A Westover man made a record catch while fishing on the Pocomoke River on July 31.  20 year old Justin Kelly reeled in a 17 pound longnose gar that was 49 inches long.  The fish put up a fight, but when he saw how big it is, he went to the nearest Maryland Fishing Challenge award center.  The previous state record for a longnose gar – 16 pounds and exceeded the 36-inch minimum angler award size.  Kelly is now one of over 90 Maryland fishing record holders.

NEWS RELEASE:  A Westover man caught a 17 pound, 49 inch longnose gar on July 31, setting a new State record. Justin Kelly, 20, was fishing on the Pocomoke River near Pocomoke City when he made the record catch, using steel leaders and live bluegill for bait.

“When the fish got close, I thought we were going to need a bigger net,” Kelly said.

After a long fight, he finally pulled the fish aboard and noticed its exceptional size. Kelly then took his catch to the nearest Maryland Fishing Challenge award center.

The center measured and weighed the fish, then checked the Maryland Fishing Guide to find that it exceeded the 36-inch minimum angler award size and broke the previous State record of 16 pounds for longnose gar. DNR Biologist, Keith Lockwood soon joined Kelly to examine the fish and certify the rare catch.

The longnose gar’s ancestry dates back to among the most primitive of species. This brackish water fish features a long, cylindrical body with tough scales and rows of large, sharp teeth. Its bony mouth makes it difficult to catch.

Kelly is now one of Maryland’s more than 90 fishing record holders. He will also join Maryland’s other angler award winners on September 10 at the Maryland Fishing Challenge Grand Finale event during the 44th annual Maryland Seafood Festival at Sandy Point State Park. He is entered in the grand prize drawing for a chance to win a boat and trailer package from Bass Pro Shops and Tracker Boats, thousands of dollars in fishing gear and trips from Bill’s Outdoor Center or a tropical vacation from World Fishing Network.

Aquarium Comes To Life At Delmarva Discovery Center In Pocomoke

POCOMOKE CITY -- The final step in the installation of Delmarva Discovery Center's 6,000-gallon freshwater aquarium is just days away.

A dedication ceremony for the aquarium is scheduled for Oct. 21 from 6-8 p.m. and will call attention to a $250,000 grant from the Fulton Owen Foundation, which made the purchase and operation of the tank possible.

Staff and volunteers are ready to show off the exhibit to the public, after working to install the tank and prep and introduce the fish to their new habitat.

"(The tank) is a great opportunity to highlight the ecology of the Pocomoke River and the unique fish that live in it," says Executive Director Brian Garrett. "We just want to recognize their generous donation and acknowledge the positive impact it's having on the discovery center."

The ceremony will include a speech by Garrett, in addition to a presentation of the tank, acknowledgment of the donors, a short speech by representatives of the Snow Hill-based Fulton Owen Foundation and a casual reception.

The tank is designed to look similar to the underwater world of the Pocomoke River and has been stocked with native fish, including Atlantic sturgeon, largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegills.

Garrett expects the tank to increase learning opportunities for area residents as well as the attractiveness of Pocomoke City as a regional tourist destination.

"For this summer, between June 1 and the end of August, we had 3,600 general admissions," said Garrett. "We are on pace to put between 7,500 and 8,000 through the center this year."

After the ceremony has ended, staff at the Discovery Center are expected to get to work on their next big project. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore recently donated a 1,500 gallon tank for a Chesapeake Bay ecological exhibit.

Garrett says before moving forward on that, the Discovery Center needs to secure additional funding, to ensure once the tank is installed there will be enough money to keep it operational and allow for the care of marine life.

First Trip For "Guided Paddles" Tour

The Delmarva Discovery Center is pleased to offer the first trip in a series of "Guided Paddles" to some of the most beautiful locations along the Pocomoke River.

The trip will delight both expierianced and novice paddlers as the guide Joe Fehrer of the Nasssawango Creek Preserve highlights the scenic beauty and unigue ecology along the way.

The trip will begin and end at The Pocomoke River Canoe Company, located in Snow Hill,MD at the intersection of the Route 12 bridge and the Pocomoke River. Try to arrive at 12:30pm to allow time for canoe rentals and transportation.

This event wil be held on the Pocomoke River. on Saturday, May 29,2010 from 1-5PM. The Limit is 15 boats. The cost per person is $5.00.

Canoe: $40.00, Tandem kayak(will hold 2 paddlers) $40.00, and the Solo kayak: $35.00.
